Congratulations to college basketball's best team in 2025-26, the Michigan Wolverines.  They were so dominant throughout this season that they led at halftime despite showing up with their D game and won the championship with nothing better than an overall C performance.

I said I'd tip my hat to Hurley if his team won and his coaching had much to do with this.  Despite the loss, I'll give him plenty of credit nevertheless.  As he said, UCONN played the type of game in terms of style and tempo which gave his team the best opportunity to win.  As a result, they hung around throughout much of the game.  Michigan's three point attempts were almost always taken out of rhythm and they uncharacteristically missed a ton of close finishes near the rim.  Credit UCONN's defense to a large extent.  It did not help matters that Yaxel was either in more pain than he let on or allowed his injuries to get inside his head.  He certainly lacked his usual explosiveness.  I had to beg him to stop taking 3's as he demonstrated zero lift on these attempts.

To those who felt that the Huskies were hosed by the officials, there were plenty of dubious calls to go around.  Former Dayton Flyer Malachi Smith seemed incapable of possessing the ball without traveling but got away with several.  A 10 second violation was missed.  I could watch this game again and probably find 6-8 bad calls that went against each team.

It's very hard to forecast "dynasties" in this day and age but I would put Dusty May7 and Dan Hurley at the top of the list of candidates who can pull this off, not because of any player continuity, but because they will both always find talented young men who really want to play for them.  A good friend of mine became very close to Dusty while he was at Florida Atlantic, and he assured me at the time that Michigan got a great one.  My friend said it's a worn out cliche, but he really might be a better person than he is a coach, and he's a great co

I wish our players would take a hard look at the history of GW transfers before deciding to leave. For every Jamison Battle there seems to be 3 or 4 Max Edwards, although I don't follow players closely after they leave GW, so maybe I'm wrong about that.

What we don't know now, and probably never will know, is which of these players Caputo tried to keep and couldn't and which he gently pushed out the door. I'm guessing he tried hard to keep Autry but Autry decided to leave to play his final year for his father. I'm also guessing he probably suggested to Bubu and Bevins that they would be better off playing down a level. I have no idea about Garrett or Jones. Caputo loved Garrett two years ago when he was injured, but he either never fully recovered this year or just wasn't as good as Caputo thought. Jones was a solid contributor but I believe Caputo brought him here to be a PG and he never seemed to fit that role.

Dan Hurley has done an amazing job at UConn, but I have a strong feeling Michigan is going to win tomorrow. By a lot.

Both Bubu and Ty had talent and were solid contributors to the team, but I don't think the loss of either one of them moves the needle on what the team will be next year. In other words, they are replaceable. I am concerned, however, about losing Autry. I think his contributions went well beyond his numbers. He seems to have a high basketball IQ (not surprising for a coach's son) and he seemed to have good leadership qualities (which would have been even greater next year, as a senior). Hopefully Caputo and staff are working the portal hard and intelligently.

Autry entering the Portal

George Washington guard Trey Autry intends to enter the transfer portal, his agency @ProMondo_Sports tells @247Sports. Averaged 11.0 PPG, 3.5 RPG and 1.5 APG this season, shooting 38.5% from three - making 84 threes in total.

This is a real bummer to me, as I would have loved to see him be our first 4 year starter in a long time… Presumably he is looking to move up to a P5 school and play in the NCAA Tourney, as it doesn’t make much sense to me for a 3 year starter to move down a level or laterally. It will be interesting to see which programs show interest.

I was thinking how smart Duke was to wait until 10 seconds left and then foul to deny the 3 to tie, but it obviously didn’t work out for them.

I am no fan of Hurley or UConn, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching them beat Duke, and that ending was amazing!

I’ve been a big critic of our scheduling, as in recent years our OOC SOS has been among the weakest in the nation. But I agree with Piranha that it was much better this year. According to KenPom, the OOC SOS was 263, about 100 better than in previous years. And considering that the A10 was better this year, and our A10 schedule was among the hardest, our overall SOS was 108.

What I have always argued for is 1 or maybe 2 games against P5 schools, as many mid-major games as we can get, and the rest games against local teams, avoiding as much as possible NET Q4 games (understanding that a few are inevitable). That’s pretty much what we had this year.

Know this isn't the right board for a lot of talk on one or two other specific teams. Especially non-A-10.
But interesting development tonight, an 11 seed beat Gonzaga, which believe was supposed to
advance much farther into the tournament. Unless VCU (in the A-10 so worthy of a lot of discussion) comes back from 7 deficit at halftime, which they are capable of but lost a key player....this Gonzaga stunning loss may be the upset of the night--or whole day.

There has been a lot of chalk in this tournament, which is a trend. Its getting worse every year. The top two teams in the A10 were embarrassed by the Big Ten today. Both teams looked like boys playing against men. Now, watch the press try to sell us on Texas, an SEC team beating a WCC team to get to the Sweet 16, as the “Cinderella” story of this tournament…

Five teams from non-power 5 conferences made it through the first round of the tournament: Gonzaga, St Louis, Utah State, VCU, and High Point. Since no one considers Gonzaga a mid major any more, despite their conference, and I would consider the Big South a low major, 2 out of the 3 remaining mid majors are from the Atlantic 10.

Really impressive win by St Louis, and the VCU comeback was amazing. Great day for the Atlantic 10!

I remember that game well, but UNM has been to the NCAA Tournament 17 times and has won 9 games. When I was a grad student there in the late 1990s, they had a player named Kenny Thomas, who had a long career in the NBA. In his 4 years there (how quaint these days!), UNM was 71-3 at The Pit, including a 41 game winning streak. They made the NCAA Tournament all 4 years (with seeds of 7, 3, 4, and 9), winning the first game and losing in the second round every time.

I will never forget a freshman Kwame Evans going 5-5 from the three vs. New Mexico

First off, tip-of-the hat to Utah Valley. Holcombe is a player and their team did a great job of switching things up on defense (as well as showing more from behind the arc than we expected). The crowd was about what could be expected in terms of turnout but was very engaged and enthusiastic.
While much will be said about Autry´s three-point shooting and Slim making his ft´s, Tyrone Marshall Jr played the game of his life tonight, at both ends of the court. Not everything he did will show up in the box score, but he was the difference maker tonight.
Still, that was another big halftime lead that got pissed away and Utah Valley´s inablity to execute on the final shot is why they are done instead of playing in the NCAA´s.
The Pit is at a higher altitude and a different level of "home court advantage". The tunnel from the visitor´s locker room to the court is painted "Welcome to The Pit, 6,000 feet above sea level and louder than..." (and then you emerge on to the court).

I really hope UNM holds on and GW gets to play at the Pit. I went to grad school at UNM. New Mexico has no professional sports teams, so the Pit has the feel of an NBA arena, despite the fact that UNM has never made it to the Sweet 16.

Took care of that one ourselves in 1993.

I would say somewhere between 1 and 2. We finished tied for 8th in conference, but due to our tough conference schedule, metrics, and NIT invitation, I feel justified believing right now that we are better than Fordham and Duquesne and therefore the 7th best team in the conference. SLU and VCU are both in the NCAAs, so nothing we do in the NIT can move GW ahead of them in my mind. But in the unlikely event that we win the whole thing, I could persuade myself that we underachieved and were in fact the 3rd best team in the conference, as Davidson (which already lost), Mason (which already lost), Dayton (playing tonight), and St. Joes (playing tonight) are all also in the NIT. Having said that, I doubt we even win tonight, let alone the whole thing, so I think at the end of the day I will have to live with the opinion that GW was the 7th best team in the conference this year.

Its been a long time since we won a game out west. I went through our schedules and only found two games out west, the disastrous losses in 2021, over the last decade. The last win I found was in 2010 at Oregon State...
