I can't believe what I'm witnessing! WOW!
Jones & Drumgoole are something not to mention the inside work of Castro & Hansen.

Not turning the ball over & the defensive effort are totally unexpected! How did they do that?
Bottle it & save it!!!!

Yes, this was sad. Where did CC coach before? He was only an "Assistant" Coach on Jim Larranaga's staff at Miami & George Mason. I don't know what his responsibilities were but it would seem that in-game strategy was someone else's job. Today's mishandling of game strategy was NOT his first. The current AD will be able to find a better coach going forward. Will it be someone on the level of Mike Jarvis or the UConn connected Karl Hobbs? I doubt it.

GW Men's Hoops » GW vs Rhode Island Game » 2/06/2024 10:24 pm

How come no more press conferences? How about asking Caputo to publicly account for this slide?

GW Men's Hoops » GW vs Rhode Island Game » 2/06/2024 9:26 pm

It's beginning to look like TV and the Athletic dept. locked this guy Caputo into a multi-year contract prematurely based on a weak OOC schedule. Maybe he was a long-time assistant coach for good reason. He hasn't been able to stop the bleeding with this bunch and his feckless assistants look useless. What's going on here? If only GW could bring in a head coach like a Frank Martin or Sean Miller! This situation is pathetic.

And in this corner, from our nation's capital, they stand at a combined 13' 7" and weigh in at a combined weight of 475 pounds, wearing white, here are Makhi and Makhel Mitchell.  The Mitchells!

Doesn't sound like a fair fight to me.  URI is 8-0 at home, 12-4 overall, 3-1 in the A10 with the loss coming by just 4 points at undefeated Davidson.  Oh, and if that wasn't enough (and don't you think it ought to be..shoutout to Letterman), we kicked their asses in DC last season.

Just 9 more days until Fordham.

Unbelievably, the Fordham program has finally made a U-turn so I wouldn't get my hopes up for an automatic win here. They're not going to be the league's doormat anymore, sorry to say.

Looks like the only mayhem we should be seeing is that of watching AD Vogel and Christian exiting GW. So desperate to quickly get beyond the scandal the administration accepted Nero's protégé as his replacement. Obviously both Vogel and Christian will not be moved until the end of next year. As GW fans we should insist they be removed if GW wants to see another dime in contributions. What a disgrace!

GW Men's Hoops » 5 more years » 11/22/2021 6:39 am

I'm with the overall tone of the board right now. I'm really frustrated that we lost to Umass-Lowell. I also think we will look a lot better at some point in the season than we do right now. That being said, I share the sentiment that the coach has lost my faith in his ability to turn things around here. I've seen enough to believe that upgrading the talent won't be enough and that to truly take a step forward, he needs to fundamentally change the way he holds players accountable and creates roles for them. Suffice it to say, I don't think that is a change he will be making any time soon.

AMEN

I am getting older, and my wife likes to remind me that I forget things, but did't we have a national search and quickly came up with JC?  I also recall some of us stating how could a national search be done so quickly....almost like it was not nationally based.

But what do I know?

Mike, I seriously doubt there was a genuine national search. After the embarrassment to the school my guess is that Vogel et al. wanted to put the matter to rest quickly. Due diligence received short shrift. Jackie Kvancz was plugged in and never would have hired someone like JC. That's my guess.

I know people say to give JC more time, but this is atrocious.  What are we settling for here?  We would struggle against Div 2 teams right now.  Sorry, but the coach and AD need to go.  It’s difficult to think of starting over, but what do we have to lose?  Nothing.

I just don’t know how anything will even happen.  There probably isn’t a lot of money on the table, and there is an interim President.  So we are stuck.  This is bad.

Agreed! As one respondent stated earlier, we're stuck through next season. Terrible situation!

Vogel's a total lightweight. Both JC and Vogel should be run out in another year.

Understatement- we are not playing well. Only saving hope facing a UMass Lowell team is that they are playing 3 games in 4 nights (16,17 and 19) from what it appears. Hope we get a tired team or else we may get run out of the gym

I like the coach and think he is a good recruiter but he is starting to remind me of that job applicant that says all the right things and you hire thinking he is going to be the next superstar for your company only to find out he is an average performer with awesome communication skills but no substance behind the speech

We have the talent to be much better than we are showing.

I would agree with your comment about JC. He'll have to deliver now. I doubt a Jackie Kvanc would have hired him. If JC can't turn things around both Vogel and JC should be terminated.

Uh oh, guess what?
Unless Dayton is incredibly bad this year they just lost at home to UMASS-Lowell. Will GW's slide continue at home? Oklahoma State managed to shut down UMASS-Lowell's guard who lit up Dayton? Does GW have the personnel now to accomplish that? I guess we'll see.

Above the Dude said: "Did not realize we had a high NFL draft pick, no less that recently.
Any other players drafted?"

From that same class with Gary Lyle, the last years of GW football, Norm Neverson, a defensive end, was drafted by the Washington Redskins. There may have been others but my memory is fading.

I take it that the question about Yinka "the Stinka" Dare being considered among the top 5 was intended to be purely facetious.

I think you guys have expertly identified the deficiencies in the head coach. That raises an important question on the recruitment of JC and due diligence. In most cases the recruitment for a head coach includes speaking with opposing coaches, conference commissioner, graduates and transfer basketball players, watching his games in person (if possible), speak with former assistants.

The GW AD does not have a background in basketball.

Did GW put too much faith in the search firm?

I raise this question (s) because JC did not learn how not to coach at GW. These same faults would have been identified at his other stops with good and broad diligence.

Apparently Vogel doesn't have a background in basketball or those connections. GW appears to have been in a rush to get past the incident (Lonergan/ Nero) so their focus could return to other serious issues. I agree that due diligence was most likely not exercised properly.

Not sure I'd call losing almost 75% of your conference games "knowing what you're doing" but he definitely had our number last season.

It was worse with previous Fordham coaches like Wittenburg & Pecora. That program cannot compete with big conference programs outside NYC. St. John's suffers now as well but Fordham most of all and for a long time.  The resources just aren't there and their location in the Bronx doesn't help.

We had no answer for Joel Soriano last year.  Hunter Dean?  You are a hopeful answer.

After watching Soriano more than once last year, you would think JC would tell defenders to force JS to go to his left, something he couldn't or wouldn't do last year. Just overplay Soriano on his right side!!!

As for Hunter Dean, he looks like just another 3 point shooter who stays out of the paint....unlikely to mix it up inside. I wouldn't expect any defense from that guy at all. What about relaying that Soriano info to GW's 6'9" Vanderbilt/ Syracuse transfer??

Regardless, I don't expect GW to win up in the Bronx given how they've played thus far. The Fordham coach knows what he's doing and his players respond to him. But given the competition from other big schools Fordham can't hold their most promising players. The Digger Phelps & Tom Penders era is long gone and the landscape for US college ball in general has radically changed.

Speaking of problems....
Looks like senior guard Maceo Jack just bailed out.

I'd have to agree with Dr. Mike's analysis above. The search for coach "#28 is not far off" and cannot and should not be far off. Oh where is Jackie Kvance, his contacts, and the administrative support he enjoyed when we need it. A big time AD with a proven track record would help immensely.

Agreed, Mentzinger!
That was disgraceful. With all the hype surrounding Christian It's about time to get back to the drawing board again. Start with a quality AD.
