Re: Smith Center Discussion + Renovations

Thank goodness!
The Hatchet reports that "the school will launch an investigation on how the initial assessment of feasibility was so different from the recent findings".
This makes me feel so much better. After Lonergan reported Nero for making payments to Larsen, the school conducted a thorough investigation. I guess they didn't bother to visit the local "watering holes" and pull the tapes.
Keep "Raising High" GW! And please stop soliciting me for money Vogel. I stopped giving GW my $ 8 years ago.

Re: Smith Center Discussion + Renovations

Frankly, I think all of you are overreacting and too critical of GW and its leadership. As one of the donors who has earmarked multiyear $$ to support the practice facility, I do not believe the practice facility has been "scrubbed." There were unexpected engineering and design issues with putting the facility in the Smith Center. And I know they are actively looking for another site either on campus or near. President Granberg is a huge fan of GW basketball and under her leadership Coach Caputo has had increased financial support for our program from the university.

Yes, we really need a practice facility and I am disappointed by the delay. They are actively looking for an alternative site.

AT Hiker. Thanks for the post and for your support of the program. Nice to see a positive post. Unfortunately too much of this board feeds off negative news.

Re: Smith Center Discussion + Renovations

So I'm assuming the university still plans to axe the swim teams despite pausing the Smith Center renovations. Is that right?

School never planned to axe the swim teams. Their very successful coach is moving on to land a position with higher profile, better resources, and commensurate with his financial worth.

Re: Smith Center Discussion + Renovations

Glad to see you're posting a bit more frequently Poog.  I would like your opinion as to whether you feel the swimming and diving coach would be moving on if not for this latest snafu.  My understanding was that ten team members have entered the transfer portal although some may be returning to GW now that they know their pool will not be converted to a basketball practice facility.

While there has been some criticism regarding faulty due diligence, as in how could the school not know what this was really going to cost before essentially pissing off its most successful sports team, the same perhaps could be said regarding whether making such a move in the first place would inevitably result in a team revolt.  Was there another way to research this that could have ended in all teams feeling satisfied?

I have been one to defend TV but I am left wondering if she could have navigated this a bit better?

It was only a matter of time before Brian Thomas would be moving on from GW. Dominating A10 swimming the way he has as coach for both the men and women leaves little else to accomplish here at GW. Much like his predecessor James Winchester who left to head TCU’s program, Brian has established his bona fides to take on a bigger program with greater resources. Can’t say whether the practice facility accelerated his departure but it certainly wasn’t an inducement to stay. With all due respect to his swimmers, most GW teams (baseball, water polo, gymnastics, golf, the Vern inhabitants) practice and play away from Foggy Bottom. Their disruptions and inconveniences are no less than what the swimmers articulated in their petition complaining about their proposed dislocation.

Successful or not, the basketball teams are the marquee components of GW athletics. The lack of a dedicated practice facility has long been identified as an albatross limiting the teams’ success and ability to compete with conference opponents. The snafu about the Smith Center is inexplicable but hard to pinpoint that exclusively on Tanya. It’s on her watch to be sure. But despite her George Washington pedigree, I doubt she was the surveyor, let alone the engineer or architect who came up with the original plans or cost estimates. It’s an embarrassment. It’s a disappointment. But it’s not something they’re not trying to address for both the basketball teams and the swimmers competing and practicing in a non-regulation pool.

Re: Smith Center Discussion + Renovations

At least news to me.  Hopefully the sound problem people mentioned this year will be fixed.

Re: Smith Center Discussion + Renovations

Quite possibly the most vacuous pablum I’ve read in quite some time. And as Biden would say, that’s not hyperbole, man.

“ This work will enhance the holistic student-athlete experience by improving the facilities where they work to achieve high levels of academic and athletics excellence all while developing the necessary skills to positively impact the world upon graduation.”

Glad to hear from others that it was not just me.
This word salad (par for the course) didn't really explain whatever the heck they
were trying to convey.
Thought it was bizarre, but maybe it meant something to others.

It is the definition of gobbledegook. Sad that they can’t find someone  to get messaging right. This stuff is just awful.
