My Regular Season Ending Awards

Some more obvious than others, some more serious than others.

Greatest Moment Inside the Smith Center:  I would normally seek out some dramatic game winner or something to this effect but for this year, nothing will beat the euphoria of rolling over Dayton.  It's nice when a greatest moment lasts two hours.

Most Significant game Outside the Smith Center:  Coming off road losses to AU and Richmond, with a meh win at Old Dominion in between, things were starting to feel like GW would again be a lousy road team.  That changed when GW upset a then-hot URI team (who had recently defeated George Mason and was undefeated at home at the time), paving the way for additional road wins at St. Bonaventure, Davidson and Fordham.

Team MVP:  This went from Jun's to lose to Slim possibly competing with Jun for the award to an absolute no-brainer by season's end.  Slim takes it and definitively deserves it.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Award:  Goes to Trey Autry.  The good, nobody who took at least 10 3's on the season had a higher percentage, and Trey had tendencies to break scoring droughts with timely 3's.  The bad.  While Trey wanted the ball in his hands during big moments, there were several instances where he either took very bad shots or otherwise made a poor decision during these moments.  The ugly:  Have you seen Trey's pre-game dance moves?  Wait a minute, change the award name.  Those moves are nothing short of spectacular.

Most Improved Player:  Unlike the A10 who considers Christian Jones a rookie and therefore ineligible for most improved, I have no qualms handing this award to someone who redshirt last season (but was on the team) since he needed to put on weight and add muscle to someone who was one of the conference's top 3 newcomers

Bet You Didn't Realize Award:  This goes to Jun who finishes with team ranks of 2nd in minutes played (despite starting in fewer than 50% of the games), 3rd in scoring, 2nd in rebounding, 3rd in assists, and 3rd in blocked shots.  Many of us tend to forget that many players would kill for that type of season.

Defensive Player of the Year:  Despite Christian Jones leading the team in steals and Jacoi Hutchinson, in my estimation, being the team's top on-ball defender, this one handily goes to Slim Castro as well.  His 44 blocks were more than twice as many as the Sean Hansen's 19 (2nd on the team), he averaged over 1 steal per game, he was the team's best low post defender by far, he corralled defensive rebounds as well as any GW player since Zeke Armwood, and he did all of this while rarely venturing into foul trouble.

Steadiest Influence:  It's challenging to hand an award to anyone who endured as bad a shooting slump as Jacoi did.  Nevertheless, there is no GW player who I want to see have the ball in his hands under heavy pressure or in tense moments than Jacoi.  He simply stays calm, shows poise, and makes the right play far more often than not.  Yes, there were some turnovers (not saying he was perfect) and the outside shooting, which has been better of late, certainly regressed.  But with Christian making his share of overanxious mistakes, Trey A. being a bit better on the other end of a catch-and-shoot play, and Gerald Drumgoole often guilty of trying to make unmakeable plays on his own, I'll take my chances with Jacoi leading the offense.

The Steph Curry Impersonator Award:  Gerald Drumgoole Jr. had 7 second half three pointers, 6 of these in the first 8:30 of the second half, to help turn an 11 point GW deficit into a 13 point GW lead at Richmond.  GW would eventually blow this lead and lose by 5, a game that I'm sure the team would love to have back.

The Know Your Role Award:  Hands down, this is Sean Hansen's award.  He set up teammates with his passing and pick setting.  He eventually started taking and making three point shots.  And, he has a pending copyright on the "Hansen Hook."

The Hope To Know Your Role Better In The Future Award:  Looking at you Trey Moss.  Your speed to the basket and quick hands on defense are tremendous assets.  Your three point shooting is not.  As several have suggested here, most of these shots are either flat or woefully short.  As others have said to me in pickup basketball games, just because you can make 3's does not mean you should be taking them.

Freshmen of the Year Award:  This is hard because I feel we have two talented ones.  Ty Bevins gave the team strong defense at times and sparked the team with timely shots.  Dayan Nevins was arguably even more productive in spurts.  I'll give the award to Ty who played a bit more and was healthier while also stating that if Dayan stays with GW and can play fully healthy, he clearly has the greater ceiling of the two in my mind.

Teammate of the Year Award:  Perhaps it's due to my own personal experience, an end of bench player who worked every bit as hard as my high school teammates, being empathetic towards players in similar situations.  But when I saw the entire team run onto the court to support Keegan Harvey during his Senior Night, a transfer who stayed on GW's team for 3 1/2 seasons while playing very little, it became obvious how likeable a teammate Keegan must be.
