And sorry, classless of us not to put bench in at all.
We blew it long before final minutes.
Are we worried about the metrics for this season?

Why was it classless? He played every healthy and available scholarship player. There is no obligation to play walk-ons. They understand the deal and it is explained to them very clearly - do not expect to play. I explain it this way to any HS players considering a d1 walk-on spot - putting on the jersey on gameday is like Halloween except you don't expect to get any candy. Sure CC could have played them if he wanted but it was not classless to decline to. Maybe he wanted to have guys experience the results of their sloppy play as a learning experience. Why make the walk-ons experience your mess?

I'll live with it being classless. Why play those portaling or graduating near the very end down by 30 or approaching that?
At the very bitter end, there was nothing to salvage for this year.
These guys go to practice every day and travel.Harvey isn't even a walkon. They might try too hard to shine in their minute or two.
But they'd play hard, not act whipped, shellshocked,or like there was no point anymore. Almost impossible to do more damage than we were allowing.
Putting them in would send a message to the team also. And it's hardly uncommon in blowouts.
CC prob was so depressed it may not have been on his part.
But one of the 4 assistant coaches could have whispered in his ear.

Not sure Harvey was even there. Did not see him on bench. Hansen was also missing. If there was nothing to salvage for year with many in portal what message were you sending?

halftime adjustments... yet again

need a seasoned coach to assist CC on the sidelines

We are moving in the right direction, but these are 2 areas where improvement is needed.

Re: Official College Basketball Crown Thread

The walk-ons are part of the team, even with the understanding that their playing time is going to be almost non-existant.   They have GW on their uniforms, show up for practice and do what is asked of them to make the team better.    It would have been nice to let them experience post season play, on national TV, for even 1-2 minutes.  Small reward for the sacrifices they have made during the course of the season.  Unless you bet GW giving 30, what difference would it have made?

Except to say this disaster tanked our KenPom to 128. Big fall for our final rating.

Plenty to improve next year.

Which of those 127 teams ahead of GW is worse than GW? 128 seems about right, middle of the pack in the A10 and (barely) upper half of DI.

Huh? There are 360+ D1 teams. I'm not a math major but that is close to top 1/3.

I was in the top 1/3 of my class in high school.   It got me into GW, but not Duke.

Re: Official College Basketball Crown Thread

Who was that idiot in the stands screaming whenever we took a foul shot? The arena was so empty that it sounded like an echo chamber. Some sick people out there.

On another note you have see the local Nashville papers front pages talking about Tennessee's horrible showing against Houston. Sounds like us but no one notices us. "Estes: What's it going to take for Vols to reach a Final Four?", "Stranded on the Doorstep", "Houston brings out worst in Tennessee" If you can't shoot or rebound you lose. 0-14 from 3 to start game.
Our problem is turnovers and no desire to rebound. Too soft. Wish we had an assistant who could teach basic rebounding like boxing out. And a John Chaney type coach that benches players that commit more than 3 turnovers in a game. This team had no problem turning the ball over and not being penalized for it. So they kept doing it over and over again. We lost a lot of games this year because of turnovers.

LSF, you just needed a B average to transfer to Duke. But that was the day when you had Zero grade inflation. A's were rarely given. However, you had to maintain a 2.0 to stay out of Vietnam. If your GPA went below 2.0 the local draft board would be notified. Strange time when we got rid of grade scores one time and had things like P for Pass, HP for High Pass and H for Honors. 1970-72 was a strange time at GW.

The screaming was present in the previous game as well.

Re: Official College Basketball Crown Thread

Embarrassing. Poor basketball, empty stands. I have this bad feeling that we will be losing even more current players to the portal in the coming weeks. The staff must realize this also because it appears we are interested in just about every single player now in the portal.

New episode of GW Basketball Insiders is out. Scott Greaney and Abe Rothstein came on to talk about their experience in Vegas for The Crown and what they made of the game. We also discussed transfer portal activity and Jamion Christian being hired as the head coach at Bryant

Re: Official College Basketball Crown Thread

So, at the end of the day, who won this thing? (And, for that matter, who won the NIT?)

Re: Official College Basketball Crown Thread

well Nebraska was ahead the last time I looked for the Crown champ, and I think the UT Chattanooga was ahead of UC Irvine. But I'm too lazy to look it up.

Re: Official College Basketball Crown Thread

I'm a little late with this and sorry if it was mentioned already but the teams who advanced to the semifinals of the Crown tournament each received thousands, while the winner may have gotten $100,000. I bring this up to say, CC may have allowed the outgoing transfers to play so they could get a chance to win money if GW was able to advance to the semifinals.

$300,000 to the winner.  $100,000 to the runner-up.  $50,000 to each semi-finalist who failed to reach the finals.

Re: Official College Basketball Crown Thread

It sounded great to be in postseason play.
If not the NCAAs or the NIT (within reach with a normal schedule), at least it was better than
the CBI. And there were pots of gold at the end of the rainbow for the players. And with a potential
long, long awaited matchup in the semifinal for fans of a certain generation.
But in the fast-moving transfer world of college basketball today and our position in it, wondering
if it cost us just a bit of valuable time restocking the roster?
Know the coaches said they can do two things at the same time. And if we were in a better place, some of us would have flocked to Vegas for the sheer enjoyment of seeing us play in the postseason.
Would be different if we won or even played competitively. But in retrospect, getting our butt kicked in Las Vegas did little to help anything, other than to show the missing pieces or player level we need for success.
That's the argument that potential transfers to GW should be aware of. The right guy can join our solid
core to make for a truly great GW season while enhancing their basketball prospects post-college.
Know this discussion had come up awhile back. And imagine there may be a post with a potentially
dismissive answer.
But wondering if the Crown, which we came nowhere near capturing, cost us with its late start date, even a fraction of transfer attention.
In a period while other A-10 teams, even those in the NIT, were starting to close in on players.

Coaches can walk and chew gum. GW was ready at the open. They will get players. Some of the early signees were priced out of the budget based on either $$$ demands or whether they warranted what others were paying. Let CC do his thing then judge.

Re: Official College Basketball Crown Thread

I'm just going to say that I read JF's post, then I saw GWRising had responded without having read what he wrote, and as it turns out, I successfully predicted what GWRising's response would be.  I mean, what were the odds?

The fact is that JF's question carries an unknowable answer.  Very possible for CC to do well in the portal and still have been at a slight disadvantage due to participating in The Crown.  The larger point though is that this program is at a stage where it can't be turning down an invitation to play in a quality postseason tournament, period.  At the end of the day, the benefits of making and participating in a field like this will always outweigh any perceived disadvantage pertaining to recruiting transfers.

100% agree

IF GW BBall were in a better place there would have been a better invite to the NCAA or NIT Tournaments

Every player got a trip to Vegas, per diem and between an average of $3k to $3.5k in NIL money.
I am sure that they appreciated it.
And smart prospective players see this and think better about the program because of this.
