Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

Hope this link works.  It's the Post article about the game that all but ended the series.  GW overcame a 17 point deficit only to ultimately lose in double overtime.  Some great GW mentions including Curtis Jeffries, Wilbert Skipper, Randy Davis, Paul Gracza, and of course, Bob Tallent who would be coaching in his final season at GW. After this game, Thompson said that he'd honor next year's matchup against GW at the Cap Centre because it was already on the books but that would be that.  In that final meeting, freshman Mike Brown outscored freshman Pat Ewing 14-9 but the Hoyas won by 13 without much of a struggle.  Brownie and Pat argued throughout much of the game as Mike knew all about Ewing's intimidation tactics and wasn't having any of it.  A few years later, I had the chance to ask Pat what it was like going up against Mike that night and he gave a less than enthusiastic "he was OK" type response.  Couldn't offer praise to a freshman who scored 14 on him?

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

I don't care that this is an exhibition because it'll probably the most anticipated game of the season, at least for most GW fans. I think someone else already suggested it, but I imagine no regular season GW game will draw as many fans as this exhibition.

I'm not expecting it, but maybe this will be the beginning of DC's version of the Big 5 Classic.  Revs, Terps, Hoyas, Patriots, and Eagles.  Would be terrific for the city.

Twerps and Pats play outside of the Beltway and you forgot the Bison. I, too, hope that the game draws a (paying) crowd and with that the hachet is burried between GW and its little neighbor so they can resume a regularly-played series.

I think it was 61 or 62 at Georgetown. GW Freshman  beat the Georgetown Freshman in overtime with 3 men to their 5. I think it was Kenny Leggins, Mark Clark and Joe Mullins.

Just an FYI...

Heard from a fellow poster on here that the ticket office is saying that if you're a renewing season ticket holder (or, I guess, first time season ticket purchaser), you must purchase your season tickets by July 15th in order to receive the Georgetown exhibition as part of your package.

After July 15th, you will have to pay separately for the game,

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

I am not picking on GW, I swear that I am not, because this is seemingly true of all sports leagues and teams.  We live in a day and age where you could buy tickets to see your favorite NFL team play on the road on a Sunday at 1:00, only to be flexed two weeks before the game to the Sunday night spot.  Gotta go to work on Monday?  Already have your plane tickets to fly home Sunday night?  Figure it out.

Closer to home, how about the last time GW went dancing?  Had GW defeated Memphis on a Friday night, it would have next played on Sunday, sometime between noon and around 10:00 at night.  (Turns out it would have been an 8:40 pm start).  However, there was no way to know what time the game would be played until Saturday.

It sure seems like the last group of people you would want to inconvenience, paying fans, are the ones getting the shaft time and again.  This brings me to today, where GW has invited me to invite friends and family to attend the GW-Georgetown exhibition, prior to those tickets being made available to the general public.  That's a nice gesture, but I can see how this might go down:

Me: Name of friend, would you like to see the GW-Georgetown game on Saturday, October 18?
Friend:  That sounds great.  They haven't played in forever, right?
Me:  That is right.  It's only an exhibition but we're still pretty excited about it.
Friend:  Great.  What time is the game?
Me:  Uhhh, you know, I don't know what time the game is.  But it should still be fun.
Friend:  Sure, but do I have to tell my wife that I'm ditching her to go to the game?

You get the point.  Please tell us what time the event is BEFORE you ask us to invite friends and family.  Doesn't seem that unreasonable.

I get your point but it could be worse. My beloved hometown team has an away game the weekend of Sept 13/14 at a place that is a 4 hr flight away (and a great road trip). So I  have a ticket there on Sept 12, but TO DATE the exact day/time of the match has not been released, so it could be the night of the 11th or even as late as the 16th or 17th. It makes reserving lodging and planning the return flight difficult, and now my beloved hometown team is in freefall and playing like sh*t, so there is even less motivation to dump more cash in to the trip.
And I have out-of-town visitors on October 18, they are going to be pissed when instead of sightseeing or a BBQ I tell them I am watching an exhibition game against GW´s inferior neighbor.

I think if you planned around say 6 pm you'd be in a good spot.

Thank you Rising but this begs these following questions:  If you know this answer, then why doesn't the public?  If GW wants me to ask people to come out and they know what time the game will start, why wouldn't they share this prior or simultaneously to announcing a presale on tickets?

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

I take Rising’s response to mean that it’s probably a night game rather than a Saturday afternoon tip-off. Maybe it’s 5, maybe it’s 7. Understand the frustration but I seriously doubt the athletic department has it finalized with Georgetown but is keeping it under double secret probation wraps.

6 pm is pretty firm but not 100%. Like Poog says maybe it is 5 and maybe it is 7 but right now it is in pencil at 6 pm.

To answer your question, there are multiple reasons.

First, believe there is a volleyball game in Smith Center earlier that day at 1 pm. Assume a couple of hours for the volleyball game and a couple of hours to get the facility ready for basketball. No way a game could start before 5 pm anyway but GW may be figuring out how long it will take to change over and have time for warmups etc.

Second, Exhibition games require officials. GW may not have a confirmation of the officials being assigned and available at 6 pm yet.

Third, GW is not nearly the only school or event that does this. If you noticed, the Florida game does not yet have a time assigned to it. In fact, none of Florida's home games have times assigned to them right now. The most likely reason is tv and officials.

Fourth, maybe GW and Georgetown have not yet fully set their practice schedules for the entire Fall. It may be that one or both needs to see when they will practice the day before or even possibly whether the Smith Center will be available for a Georgetown walkthrough.

I think the feeling is that it is better to wait and mark it TBA than to go out with a wrong time which will require multiple notifications and cause some people to be upset if they had plans around the game.

I get your frustration but when I tell you 6 pm I am going to be very close if not spot on.

Shame on me for overlooking the volleyball game. GW hosts Dayton Friday night and at 1:00 on Saturday the 18th. 5:00 seems most unlikely given that volleyball matches can stretch to a time consuming 5 sets (even against the perennial league leader Flyers). Great doubleheader for those so inclined. See you there Keith, Vince and Terri. Might as well make it a day too, Megan.

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

GWRising and Poog, I appreciate your responses.  Still, this information doesn't rectify the point of my original post which is simply to work out the time of the game first before asking season ticket holders to ask others to attend an event where the start time is unknown.  It's one thing to promote this game this way to us diehards as most of us would attend a GW-Georgetown exhibition game with a 3:00 am start.  But for us to invite others who are far less vested than us?  Sorry but I need to let them know what time the game starts.

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

my main fear about this game is that if GW "wins" there will not be a regular season matchup between GWU and Georgetown for at least another 25 years

Remember the last Maryland at GWU game

I understand but there is of course the dueling consideration that we are about 7 weeks away from the game. I am sure GW wants to try to sell this out and they probably couldn't wait any longer. I promise you that no one is trying to hide the start time or thinks this is the optimal way to do business.

To be perfectly frank here, I am sure GW is learning how to deal with an exhibition game of this magnitude since it has really never happened before. It is somewhat of a unicorn as far as exhibition games go. If this becomes a regular thing, then I am sure the process all the way around will be better in the future.
