Re: Caputo signs contract extension

The best part of this is the signal that GW intends to compete at a high level for a long time, and hopefully this silences the speculation about moving down to a lower conference, D3, etc.

This has been nonsense for at least the last five years.

Beyond the GW president, the academic salaries for administrators seems quite high. Prob the market. But that market is screwed up. And colleges are going to have to reckon with that at some point in the future.

major college football universities who have recently fired high paid coaches with long term contracts are finding that out now. i don't expect those to be the new gold standard going forward.

Simply not true. It was discussed at the highest levels of GW. They obviously didn't move forward but it was discussed I am told. You should know there are some at GW who would argue for this in a minute. Had the new President had a Knapp-like vision, we might have been sunk. Fortunately, the new President is all in on D1 so far.

Now, if the current experiment (increased financial support) doesn't yield dividends or there is a sea change in the way the NCAA is operated perhaps this gets revisited.

However, the idea that we are immune from this now is a risky position to take because it may not be entirely within GW's control.

Re: Caputo signs contract extension

As Joe Pop-O-Pie said "You need two things to get rich in this world: lots of money, and lots of money"
By 2030 I wonder how much coaches´ salaries will be important compared to the importance of player salaries. The idea of playing for "Coach Legend" might not be as important as playing for a big payday to 18-22 year-olds in the near future, turning head coaches into budget managers more than X´s-and-O´s people. In the shorter-term, this might be a nice defensive move by GW to keep Caputo in place should ´Cuse (or another monied programme) come calling-- yes, there is a quip in there about USF´s coach, he can go f-himself. Remember the off-season anguish Jarvis would cause us? Yeah, I´d shell out a few bucks to Caputo to not have to spend April and May constantly heading to the pharmacy to stock up on Rolaids.

Re: Caputo signs contract extension

This is one of those decisions that should not be controversial in the slightest unless you are not convinced that CC is the right person for the job (or if you believe the jury is still out).  In my view, he has shown substantial progress, is a great spokesman for the program, understands the new world of NIL and the portal, and is very visible and vocal with respect to fundraising.  And as a bonus, as best I can tell, he and his family enjoy living in this area.

My sincere hope though is that with the extension comes a hefty buyout should CC be poached by a major.  If we were to lose CC, it would be nice if we were the ones receiving a big check, rather than writing one to "not be at GW", for a change.

As I've said in the past, if you feel you have the correct person, lock them up long term as best you can.

It’s a no-brainer.  He may or may not take us to the promised land, but there is literally no better fit for GW right now. The guy gets (and loves) GW, understands what it takes to win, is extremely well respected, and has us pointed way up.
