At halftime on Saturday, GW raised its first ever jersey "to the rafters", honoring Joe Holup. This took place during halftime in front of Mr. Holup's extended family. Byron Kerr said a few words as the vast majority of longtime fans who might care about such an honor were headed to the Champions Club for dessert. I honestly felt horrible for the members of the Holup family. I understand that the vast majority of us never got to see him in play but nevertheless, he's an essential part of GW basketball history, and his family deserved more attention than just that of the 50 or so people who were happy to see this recognition. Three additional ceremonies will be taking place this season and I can only hope that changes will be made.
Option 1: Ask the Club Members to stay in their seats for a special ceremony honoring Name of Player.
Option 2: Do this during the pregame, like Senior Day, encouraging fans to be in their seats 15 minutes before the start of the game.
Option 3: Do this during an extended timeout. This may not be feasible, but I'd rather make quick mention of the honor and allow the fans to express their gratitude than to honor someone with hardly anyone seeing or realizing it.
Anything has to be better than what took place at halftime on Saturday. It's long overdue to honor past GW greats in this manner. Let's start going about this the right way.

I couldn’t agree more, mayhem. I felt exactly the same disappointment for the family that you spoke of.
It seems to be the pregame option is the way to go.
One quick note, though, is that this was the first basketball player to have their number retired. During the volleyball season,Svetlana had hers already retired. Regardless, it is long overdue to have this kind of initiative in place.
