There was always an asterisk placed next to Roger Maris's record-setting 61 HR season because it came during a 162 game season, as opposed to Babe Ruth's 60 HR season over a 154 game season. It was easy to understand why the asterisk existed. Sure, Maris became the new record-holder but eight fewer games is eight fewer games. At least the asterisk was the result of the league's decision to expand its season and not caused at all by Maris or the 1961 Yankees.
This brings me to Bam Adebayo whose 83 points last night became the second highest scoring game in NBA history behind Wilt's 100. You may have problems with Wilt's 100, there were no three second lane violations as an example, but nothing about the performance violated the rules of the game or the true competitive spirit. Bam scored 31 in the first quarter and I'm going to assume, since I did not see this, that there was nothing wrong with the way that he and the Heat went about things. It wasn't until he had scored 55 with over 4 minutes left in the third quarter that I turned the game on.
In my mind, there was nothing wrong with leaving Bam in the game until he passed Kobe Bryant's 81 point mark. There was nothing wrong with letting Bam take practically every shot in the 4th quarter even though this is not how the game was meant to be played. The Wizards were actually double-teaming him (and even triple-teaming him on occasion) but all this led to was a barrage of foul calls, resulting in Bam setting NBA records for free throws attempted and free throws made in an NBA game. Not to be a killjoy, I could live with all of this.
What was inexcusable is that over the last 4 minutes or so of the game, each time the Wizards took possession of the ball, the Heat immediately fouled them to stop the clock and extend the game. The Heat were winning by 30 or so the game's outcome was never in doubt. This tactic allowed the Heat to generate far more possessions which translates to far more scoring opportunities for Bam to score and pass Kobe's total, than what should have been the case had the game played out normally.
Today, we should be praising Bam on one of the great NBA game performances ever. Instead, I'm thinking about the Heat and how they orchestrated this farce and realizing that Bam has the second highest scoring game in NBA history, with an asterisk next to it due to how the Heat manipulated the fourth quarter.

It is not as if the Warriors did not overfeed Wilt the night he scored 100. (Full disclosure, the assist leader and second-leading scorer that night was neighbor/family friend growing up Al Attles, so maybe I am biased?). And Wilt got it on with lots of ladies.
So what does that mean for the the price of tea in China?

It's one thing to overfeed. It's another to foul every possession on defense to stop the clock so you can get extra possessions for your scorer.

I might agree with you except for one thing. The Wizards are a joke. There is no way I am letting a post score 83 points. He got to the line 43 times. Does anyone play defense on the Wizards? Anyone have any pride? The ball was not in Bam's hands unless it was passed into him. How about deciding to X him out. This was not Kobe who could hurt you offensively in so many ways. The man was averaging about 18 points per game prior to last night.
The Wizards got exactly what they deserve and they can whine about it until the cows come home. If they didn't like the Heat's strategy then they should have done something about it. It's the counter argument to being up 30. If you are down 30 what is the difference if you lose by 40 or more? But we are not letting anyone embarrass us. They got thoroughly embarrassed last night. It's in part why they have been a historically a bad team.

Am guessing you did not see the game Rising.
First, in the 4th quarter, the Heat players were inbounding the ball to Bam who dribbled the length of the court. Either the Wizards double teamed him in which case Bam would dribble straight into a defender to create contact and pick up foul calls, or he would take a shot after dribbling the length of the floor.
Second, what you said about the Wizards stopping it if they didn't like it makes no sense. The Heat would score and then purposefully foul the Wizards in order to stop the clock and then quickly get the ball back. How are you supposed to stop a team from purposefully fouling you? The Heat knew it had the game won so they didn't mind providing the Wizards with free points.
And it was this tactic that was so bush league on the part of the Heat. Not arguing that the Wizards are good enough to stop anything, but this had more to do with doing whatever it took to get Bam in the record books even if this meant violating the spirit of the game. Bam could have scored a legitimate 60 and we would all be marveling about how great he played. Instead, the Heat decided to taint the proceedings, very badly IMO.

The Wizards could have very easily stopped the nonsense. First, they could have decided to deny Bam out and also double team him to get the ball out of his hands to deny him any record. Second, failing that, a good hard foul might have sent a message maybe even started a fight. If someone had some pride I promise Bam would not have scored 83. You don't let teams embarrass you with bush league tactics. You think any of the teams of 1980's, 1990's or 2000's would have allowed that? NBA is soft now.

I watched the game and found the whole thing to be just plain weird. An abysmal basement dwelling Wizard team vs an irrelevant starved-for-any-positive attention Heat team that is begging to avoid the play-in round. The Heat have been dealing with the Jimmy Butler dysfunction not to mention the Terry Rozier dumpster fire. Bam is a class act who has been working his ass off for years and has become the face of the Heat along with Haslem, Morning, and Riley. Does scoring 100, 83, 81 really matter? It’s a freaky statistic that caused bogus behavior by Spo, the fans, and teammates. It was just weird and awkward and means very little. Watch him follow up with 12 pts and 2 rebounds lol
