NCAA Hoops this Year!

I was told today by a long-time New Mexico men's hoops fan that the Albuquerque newspaper reported today the NCAA plans to begin college basketball between November 20 and 25. What are other people hearing?

Re: NCAA Hoops this Year!

It was either going to be just before or just after Thanksgiving, or as late as early December.  Many schools with students on campus will be asking students to stay home between Thanksgiving and January.  Final exams would be administered online.  This will give basketball teams roughly 7-9 weeks to be on campus with their fellow students home.  Am interested in seeing whether conference games will start the season due to many of these match-ups requiring air travel, followed by nonconference play where bus rides will be encouraged.

Link didn't work...sorry, I don't know why.   But if you scroll down, you will see brief mention of the start of the season.  Or if you go to ESPN.Com, then NCAAM, you will find entire article, which is very interesting.  Other stuff on link that posted is likewise interesting, including the transfer ratings.

Re: NCAA Hoops this Year!

Before everyone gets too excited, the NCAA announced a football season too. Then, changing pandemic situations caused the PAC 12 and Big 10 to cancel (since reinstated on the Big 10). This is a fluid situation and will depend much on what happens over the next two months with respect to the pandemic. Local governments can step-in and prevent games from being played. So can school Presidents and conferences. We still have a ways to go before I would be very confident. We can only hope and pray. There is still a lot of distance between here and there but at least it's a first step..

I will point out that no major sports league in the U.S. has played so far during the pandemic: the NHL, NBA, MLB, NFL, Soccer and College Football. i doubt college hoops will be the first major sport shut down.

Re: NCAA Hoops this Year!

Hatchet Reporter says Bishop's NCAA waiver was approved so he'll be eligible to play this season. Yeah!!! Go Gdub!

It also looks like games can't be played before Nov. 25th with teams limited to no more than 25 games.

Re: NCAA Hoops this Year!

Nov 25th is less than 3 weeks after the normal regular season start.  We'll see if they (the NCAA) can pull it off.   When can practice start?   What precautions has the NCAA put in place?

Re: NCAA Hoops this Year!

I think there will be a college basketball season because unlike football, it's a lot easier to have schools competing in bubble locations across the country. I'm guessing you could have 3 or 4 non-conference/conference bubble events(where would the A10 bubble be, D.C.? Virginia? Philadelphia? New York?) and be able to get in about 20 games that can set up the NCAA tournament.

Earlier today, Louisville coach Chris Mack actually posted on twitter that he's looking for 8-12 teams to compete in a Louisville Bubble!! It will be held from November 25 through December 5, 8-12 teams, 3-5 games per team, Lodging, Medical Protocols. I thought it was a joke, but it looks like he's serious. Would GW consider participating in this Louisville bubble? Who is going to start the DMV/D.C.area bubble??

Re: NCAA Hoops this Year!

I actually wonder if GW is likely to end up being a host or cohost of a similar bubble here.

Eamonn Brennan reports in The Athletic that he and Ben Standig that they have been briefed by organizers in the planning stages here in DC.

Re: NCAA Hoops this Year!

13 will be the minimum number of games and 25 is the maximum, beginning November 25th..  With there being 18 conference games, that would leave us 7 OOC.  I suspect that a full schedule was never completed, and of those games that were already scheduled, some were against conferences (i.e. the Ivy) that have already announced no games before the first of the year.  I imagine the Athletic Department is now hard at work in finalizing our 7 OOC games.    I would likewise expect to hear something official from the Athletic Department regarding the upcoming season now that the NCAA has reached its decision.  ESPN article also indicated that November 25th marks the end of the fall semester (which was one of the reasons that was selected as the start date).   Don't we have a transfer (Hunter Dean?) who would become eligible after the end of the Fall semester?   Of course I am now excited knowing that a college basketball season will be attempted, even though a Covid spike could put an end to this.  Realistically, I cannot imagine viewing any games live for the entire 2020-2021 season, which would be very disappointed. as so much of my enjoyment of the college basketball season is the atmosphere at the games.

Retrying my failed link to the ESPN article from before.  If you haven't seen it, it is worth the read.
