Coaching carousel?

Maybe have a thread here?

Very interesting that Richard Pitino gets picked up by UNM before his 15 minutes to clean out his desk at Minnesota have ended. An aggresive or desperate move by the Lobos?
Not sure which is the better opening available right now, Minnesota or Iowa St. or Indiana?

Re: Coaching carousel?

The DePaul job is also open.

Hiring Pitino Jr. seems like an equal combination of aggression and desperation, I don't think anyone was going to be in a rush to hire him, but he is a big name and they maybe able to sell the fact that he had a few competitive teams in the Big 10 during his tenure.

Even though the Indiana fans seem to have an unrealistic view of how great it is to coach in Bloomington, I'd say its the best opening by far right now because of it's history. Despite the 20-year downward trajectory, Indiana still has a storied history and its a basketball-crazed state, the right coach can get them back to being national title contenders every year. Indiana fans/alums seem to want Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens, who turned Butler into a national powerhouse. B.Stevens may consider taking the IU job when you see how the Celtics are underachieving this year.

Re: Coaching carousel?

which Thomas, is why 71-91 Tom Crean doesn't get it done, still a blue blood, and like you say, the right Coach can return them to perennial contender status

huge die hard fan base, storied tradition

Re: Coaching carousel?

Might have missed a couple but the openings are:

George Mason
Indiana
Iowa State
College of Charleston
Minnesota
DePaul
Binghamton (interim)

Re: Coaching carousel?

Larry K is out at Utah tonight, I realize they slipped recently but that comes as a surprise. Had some really good teams, and cranked out some legit NBA talent, e.g:

Delon WrightJakob Poeltl and Kyle Kuzma=16px

Re: Coaching carousel?

Iowa St hires TJ Otzelberger away from UNLV. Seems an odd hire (even if he was a long-time ISU assistant).
So the Vegas job is now available, too.

Poor Siena if Carm jumps ship

Only reason anyone would take that job is for money.  But you are almost betting against yourself to take the quick money from Fordham rather than wait for the same money at a place where you are less likely to get fired 4 years from now.

Re: Coaching carousel?

Some are saying on Twitter that Grasso shouldn't give up Bryant jfor Fordham either.  Other than $$$ the path to an NCAA tournament is probably easier in a one-bid NEC.

Grasso has most all of his Bryant team returning and should be the league favorite.  Many think he might do well next season and be able to parlay that into a much better job than Fordham.

Not sure they are the league favorite next year. The Mount and Wagner will have a lot to say about that as they also return their teams.

Re: Coaching carousel?

Minnesota and Vegas jobs have been filled with low profile hires (UNLV went with an assistant, no less).
More interesting is that University of Portland snatched Eastern Washington´s coach. That is an attention grabber because while the WCC tops the Big Sky, Portland is the WCC´s equivalent to Fordham and E. Washington has a good football team that brings in the money and facilities (even if it is the "third fiddle" in that major media market that is Spokane, fourth or fifth if you take in to account the greater Spokane/Boise area... and yes the use of "greater" is sarcastic).

Meanwhile, Indiana is still a vacancy. One wonders what is being plotted there...

There was a story out yesterday morning that Indiana was set to hire Thad Matta (who left Ohio State amid medical issues), but that it fell apart when Matta failed a physical.

Then, many hours later, Indiana went into spin mode to deny the story.

No idea what’s true, but seems clear that they intended to hire Matta and it’s not happening, probably because of some medical reasons.

I know he got a massive payday, but have to wonder if regrets leaving VCU (and if Archie Miller regrets leaving Dayton).
