GWAA - With the cost of recruiting and retaining players, NCAA Tournament bids are no longer noble, I think they're existentially necessary from a revenue standpoint. Coaches all over the country are telling their fan bases to direct their financial support to collectives (much of which, I'd suspect, is at the expense of annual donor support), and athletics isn't getting any cheaper.

Secondarily, With UMass already departing, GW has to make sure that they're in the best position possible in case the next conference carousel impacts the basketball-driven leagues. I think that GW could have at least had an argument during parts of the Hobbs and ML years to get into a BIG EAST conversation (yes, I know that Georgetown would never allow it, yada yada), but I think that Dayton, VCU, Richmond and SLU are attractive brands for would-be poachers. Can GW get into that echelon, or are we one of the many schools that would have to go to the CAA or the Patriot if the Atlantic 10 imploded?

If you're not willing to call the above a priority, then it's time to talk about moving out of Division I.

Rising, all of us did just fine without cell and smart phones all those years so why use them now?
Use all the tools at your disposal. Funny you are using cost to support your position after all the financial debacles we have endured with GW the last 8 years.
Yes, USC did use a search firm to ASSIST them with Boehm's hiring (as do all major programs). Read my email. Using a search firm or any other tool does not guarantee success or guarantee you will get all the dirt on a candidate. It's just another resource to go with all the other resources at your disposal.

Anyone have specific names they think would be good? Special prize if you say a name that ends up as the AD

Because we threw away money before isn't a great argument for throwing it away now. Bottom-line just like USC when the hire goes bad (even for reasons unrelated to wins and losses) no one takes accountability - not the school, not the search firm. It's then just wash, rinse, and repeat. I'd have to look it up but I'd probably bet some money that USC went right back to the same search firm. It's a great business model especially when it's a gift that keeps on giving because we all know, for example, most coaching hires now last less than 5 years either because they failed or because they move on. Here's some data on that relating to football...

https://www.on3.com/news/current-fbs-coaches-have-been-in-their-jobs-for-an-average-of-just-3-7-years/

Can't imagine why folks can't figure this game out on their own. If it's a tool, it's a broken one at best.

Ed Scott, UVA.
Lived through the nightmare of Patrick Nero. Has the ability and smarts to lead us out of this self inflicted Hell. Has AD experience in addition to P-5 Asst AD experience. Fundraising experience. Was a college athlete himself.
Don't hold your breath on GW making the right decision based on our history of bad ones.

Ed Scott would be fine but I'll give an out of the box one and I'm not even sure he would be interested (doubt it for a variety of reasons) - Mike Brey - alumni, connected to men's basketball, fundraiser experience at ND, a guy who could rally GW alums and donors. Let's face it we can talk about all the other sports at GW, but we know which one drives the train from a revenue and donation perspective. The last two successful ADs we had at GW were basketball guys. Just saying.

I've got others in mind but some of them are already interested and have jobs so don't want to mention them here.

I say Ed Scott knowing that GW is probably the last job he would ever want. He is intimately familiar with our history and jumped on the 1st ship to sail out of here when he saw what was happening under Nero. He's been the man at a lower level D-1 job so he will likely get a P-5 job if he continues at UVA.

Mike Brey, a good friend and mentor of ML from what I've seen, isn't happening. Brey isn't going to interrupt his semi-retirement as an asst in Atlanta (where he's being paid very generously) to come fix what's broken at GW. Wishful thinking on both Scott and Brey.

This is a results oriented business, and the results were not strong enough ultimately

Although some good things were done during the TV years, the flagship programs, didn't flourish enough

Men's Hoops, in good shape for the future with CC.  Great hire.  The Women's program has been an unmitigated disaster but lets be honest, GW sports begin and revolve around Men's hoops, with the decline of the once mighty Women's program.  We have the WNBA MVP, we have all those years of greatness that feel rearview mirror.

The Men's program has been through hell and back, but we will be back under CC.  The stink of the 2016 fiasco as I predicted 7 years, 8 years ago would linger like a Chernoybl, that's not a year or 2 that's YEARS in the rebuild.   But we're finally about to turn the corner...

Have heard some buzz about the next AD...but nothing concrete or that can be shared

I just wanted to offer my congratulations to The Dude on this bold prediction:

"The stink of the 2016 fiasco as I predicted 7 years, 8 years ago would linger like a Cherrnoybl, that's not a year or 2 that's YEARS in the rebuild."

I mean, who else but The Dude could possibly have foreseen this?  One of the school's all-time graduating classes was departing, a successful head coach gets unceremoniously (and I would argue unjustifiably) dumped, a despicable corrupt athletic director hires as his replacement the least experienced of three assistant coaches (and reportedly one in a position to blow the whistle on the AD), the remaining assistant coaches are pissed but remain in their positions, and subsequently recruiting quality high school players and attracting valuable transfers becomes a near-impossibility as a result.

With all of the fighting that went on during this period in time (which one deserved to lose his job, or was it both?), I would venture to say that the one thing that everyone agreed upon at that time, no matter what your feelings were on the subject, was that this was going to take a minimum of 5 years for GW to recover from this mess.  Some thought quite a bit longer than that.

But hey!  The Dude would like to take credit for his successful prediction, a prediction along the lines of the Wizards were not going to win the NBA Championship this season.  Just classic Dude.

Hold on Gwmayhem. I may have been reading another message board but I distinctly recall that not only did the Dude not predict it would take 8 years but he tried to convince us that the ML dismissal was the right move and it would just take a few years of Mojo to show that. You don't recall all the ML shortcomings that the Dude dutifully listed? You don't recall how he told everyone once ML was removed that the program could move forward? Now he has the stones to come here and tell us he predicted all along that it would take a long time to recover? Just "wow!" is all I can muster at this latest Dude episode.

Since nobody reacts to his strange threads he starts, he needs to post on ours.
Keep ignoring the troll folks.

As long as Mike Brey has been mentioned, I'll take this brief opportunity to show my support.  This almost makes too much sense not to happen.  Yes, he's an NBA Special Assistant but that always struck me ae Quin Snyder helping out his long-time friend who helped recruit him to Duke.  Maybe Mike loves the NBA and if so, then that's that.  Or, maybe he'd like to return to a college environment where he has spent practically his entire professional career.  Not to mention the school that he graduated from and the geographic area where I believe he and his wife are both from.

Normally, I'd be quick to point out that Mike has never served as an AD or an Assistant AD.  The reason why this is an exception is because of Mike himself.  He has a magnetic personality who virtually everyone he meets admires.  He is a bright guy who can quickly pick up the nuances of the job.  I watched Barry Alvarez leave football coaching to become Wisconsin's AD and he was a masterful leader while holding that position.

Could the dollars be worked out?  I haven't got a clue.  No idea what Mike would need but if he shows any interest, he'll have to know that the pay will be less than exceptional. Mike has obviously been well compensated throughout his career so perhaps this doesn't become a huge issue for someone in his mid-60's.

Without a doubt, Mike would check so many boxes.  A basketball guy.  A GW guy.  A sounding board for Chris Caputo.  A guy who will automatically command respect from anyone and everyone in the college sports community.  If I am President Granberg, I would not be spending money on a search firm until I first spoke to MIke and confirmed that he is not interested.

I don't think the GW Athletics Department is resourced well enough to have someone with no experience at the top of the administrative pyramid. Barring a major investment in personnel, seems to me that an AD will have a lot of day-to-day responsibilities that go beyond overseeing Men's Basketball and raising tons of money.

Bringing on Mike Brey would be tremendous, but I'd imagine it would need to be in a role similar to Darrell Green's at George Mason: a community-oriented face with no significant operational responsibilities.

Mike Brey is not coming to be AD. It was asked and answered. Next discussion.

It would indeed seem unlikely for a number of reasons, especially Brey's. Plus, GW always endeavors not to do anything positive or generally supportive of alumni.
       But who asked--and who answered?

Alumni with connections to Brey asked and he basically answered not at this time.

Ed Scott is off the board. Headed to Memphis to serve as AD.

Good for him to escape his situation at GW and use his talents as a plus.
Well, just shows Ed Scott would have been a good choice.

Happy for Ed. I was half joking when I mentioned him for our AD spot. Way too much baggage from GW. He knew the real story about was was going on with Nero in 2014-2016. Did his job and cleared ML of the baseless accusations only to have the school administration ignore him. He was smart to jump off the ship before it sank - shows he has good judgement. Also, he was destined and following the path to run a major program - just didn't think it would be that quick.
I'm waiting to see who we choose as the next AD. I hope there's some good candidates that are interested so we won't be stuck with another TV.
