Next up on Sunday is UVA, our last Power 5 opponent of the regular season. Of all the games against P5 teams so far, this one looks like the most winnable, but it's no gimme. UVA was predicted to finish last in the ACC this year and they've gotten off to a poor start, but they have a few quality players, and only two players on the roster are under 6' tall. They are currently 2-6 this year with wins over UC-Fullerton, and just this week, William and Mary. All loses, except Richmond (by 9), have been in by double figure margins. Other losses were to James Madison, UCF, USC (Southern Cal), UCLA, and Rhode Island.

As a team, UVA averages 58.4 ppg on 38.3% shooting, and 25.2% from beyond the arc. However, they have been a poor free throw shooting team, averaging 57% from the line, and are turnover prone at almost 19 TOs a game. After our JMU matchup, GW now averages 47.4 ppg on 33% shooting, and 25.2% from beyond the arc, but shoots 73% from the free throw line and turns over the ball at a 15.5 TO per game clip. Defensively, UVA gives up 65.4 ppg, while GW is at 51.6 ppg, having held six of our 8 opponents to 50 points or below.

UVA's best players are Camryn Taylor, a 6'2" forward who averages 15.3 pts and 7.3 rebs, and Amandine Toi, who averages 12.5 pts. They have nine players who get significant minutes, so there could be surprises lurking from the bench.

For GW, it's hard to predict who the scorer of the day might be. Ty Moore limped off the court on Thursday, so no telling if she'll be at full strength, or even play at all. Hopefully, multiple players will step up, and we'll be able to amass enough points to win, because our defense should be solid, as it usually is.

We got it to within 3 points with about 3 or 4 minutes left, but then UVA hit a big 3, and that was about it from there.  GW 53 UVA 62 FINAL.

This was the worst offensively played game of the year, particularly by Gingras, who had to bear the PG load with Kyra Frames out due to concussion protocol, and Moore and Laureano out because of other injuries. Without three starters, the offense was disjoint, but in the end, the real culprit was just carelessness and lackadaisical passing (26 TOs) that led to numerous easy points for a UVA team that has had difficulty on offense this year. Although we never got into much of an offensive rhythm, we continued to play hard, and made the game close at the end. The new rotation seemed to effect our defense, which wasn't as robust as usual.

Gingras had 8 TOs, many a result of trying to do too much, and her teammates not knowing how to help her out. She took too many tough shots and finished just 3-13 from the field. Taiwo also threw some careless passes in traffic. Our poor 4-14 from the free throw line didn’t help.

On the positive side, it’s clear, we now have a legitimate offensive #1 in Nya Lok. She scored in every way possible, and with fluidity and calm (26 pts on 8-17 shooting, and 4-8 from 3 pt range). No rushed or bad shots, and great form. When the others get healthy, look for the overall offense to improve significantly, especially if we find a way to take advantage of Lok’s ability. Taiwo did grab13 rebs, including 7 offensive. Also, when we didn't turnover the ball, we got some pretty good looks at the basket.

This is a game that could and should have been won, but I’m sure Coach will use it as a learning experience, especially for the younger players on the team.

26 turnovers?! How can a coach tolerate such slop. Maybe 8 turnovers a game but this is not acceptable, especially at this level of basketball.  Oh for the days of John Chaney.

I was hoping there would be a highlight video of Lok's game, but none so far. I did find this video from earlier this year, when Nya was in the World Cup qualifiers for South Sudan. These highlights mimic what she did against UVA last night. Very deliberate, doesn't hesitate, and can score in traffic. Really pleasant surprise.

Looking forward to seeing much more of this.

OK, so I just added this-- offensive highlights for GW, especially Lok... so you see what I mean..

She does look good!  Now lets get our injured back in action.  Was watching Penn State women todat.  I'm afraid Ali looks less agile than last year.  Has she gained weight?
