I can't believe the number of 2022 recruits on our radar! Truly impressive, and huge credit once again to the staff for the hustle. They obviously demand it on the court and are showing it off the court too.
Wide range of prospects too, from guys only small schools are currently after (who may blow up next year) to those who the Big Boys are also after.

Question for the recruiting experts out there. It's logical to think that a player would either like to play close to their hometown so that family and friends can come to many games, play outside of their home market to "get away from home", but not so far that it makes it more difficult and expensive for family to visit and vice versa, or simply don't factor this into their decision which makes a west coast player traveling east every bit as viable as any other recruiting situation. When you look at these interested schools for western players, most are located out west with just a handful of east coast schools participating. That could be a big advantage for GW, but the question I have is whether attempts are made before recruiting players out west to determine whether the player is open to playing on the east coast. It seems that if you had no idea whether a west coast player would consider moving east, you would be taking a lot of "swings and misses" which would make me question the wisdom of focusing a lot of recruiting attention out west. But, if you did know that the player would consider playing in the east, then this could be a solid pipeline. So again, the question is whether coaches know before they begin recruiting a west coast player whether the player is open to moving to the east coast, or do they generally not know this and are just hoping to sell their program 3,000 miles away.

Good question GWmayhem. I would say that generally that question is sure to come up before an actual offer is sent out to the recruit (although recruits can lie to earn the offer and generate more buzz). Coaches generally would love to know as early as possible if distance plays a role, but in this climate showing off scholarship offers and racking them up generates more buzz so most tend not to cut teams off until very late in the process (in the case of a team like us, an A10 offer or interest can definitely generate some interest from other programs).
During the initial contact period, other non-geographical factors of fit are discussed. Something that this staff in particular tends to do is not offer a prospect until they have visited campus so they get a feel of what the atmosphere is like (times have changed a bit lately of course though). Hammond for example has already taken an unofficial last summer and has been followed by Coach Bousley for a while now. It definitely helps to have a California native on the staff, and I would say from the player perspective, you are simply just going to get more coverage/visibility on the east coast even at a school like GW than out west (Pac-12 schools are an exception, as are some schools in the Mountain West like San Diego State, Nevada, and UNLV especially when they have a good year). CA of course has so much talent that I think players by default have to make that challenging decision if they want that visibility (academics, coaching staff, and player development often play a bigger role than geography, although each player is different in how they value those four things), and of course GW has academics to sell as well. I think it might be tougher for us in the early going as we are still working our way back to where we want to be, but once we are competitive again I do believe that we will be seen as a more desirable destination, and it is wise to start building those relationships now. Personally, I am glad that we are branching out a lot more than we did in the past, because GW is in such a unique location.
