I like Rutgers for Jun. They will obviously be losing two huge stars in Harper and Bailey. Their offense is not overly reliant upon three point shooting. Rutgers ranked #201 in three point attempts, and shot nearly 3 more per game than it had the prior season.
It's interesting that GW's best win all season helped seal Jun's fate in a way. The team made 15 3's in blowing out Dayton without Jun. It would soon become apparent that what worked so well a year prior, Jun essentially with the ball in his hands almost every possession, was rendered far less effective with Slim also on the court. One thing you can't say about CC is that he's not a man of his convictions. He took the ball out of JB's hands during his final year of college basketball in favor of Jun being the focal point of the offense (think how difficult a decision that must have been), and then reversed course again when he saw what his offense could look like without Jun bull rushing.
Jun should be able to develop his midrange game at Rutgers. What will be interesting is whether they will play him much like CC played him during his first season. Yes he'll be going up against much better defenders but he should also have more talented teammates to work with. Does Jun's unique skill set only work against inferior competition or will his combination of size, strength, speed, and ball handling give him an advantage even against a much higher level of competition? It will be interesting to observe.
Isn't he going to be outsized in the Big 18? He's going to be going up against forwards who are 6-9 and bigger every night.

Good for Jamion! Always happy to hear of former GW coaches getting jobs. D-1 head coaching jobs don't get handed out to just anyone.

Again, less than 24 hours later, another coach bails. Was he already in negotiations with Minnesota before the tournament? I'm assuming so. Bet he didn't even wait an hour after the game to give the Gophers a buzz.

Surprised nobody mentioned the firing of Keith Urgo (Fordham). After a great first year, it was probably a combination of alleged recruiting violations and finishing dead last in the conference that sealed his fate. Was surprised to read that Fordham's basketball budget is in the top 3rd of the conference. Not much to show for for the money, however, for the perennial bottom feeder of the conference.
Yeah, that's pretty shocking. Was thinking at the A-10 tournament about why Fordham is always a bottom feeder. Great location and access to talent, big budget, pays well (Urgo made $1m per year according to NY Post). Why can't they get it together?

What an obvious travel by Queen there on the game winner against Colorado State. The lack of travel calls in the NCAA tournament and in college basketball is disgraceful. The fact that none of the broadcasters in this game since the final shot even bothered mentioning such an obvious four-step travel is a slap in the face to viewers and fans.

Interesting to see his next roster build.
Funny how he signed his deal less than 24 hours after his team lost. I know that's how it works, but it never ceases to amaze me.
GW Men's Hoops » Fire McGlade already » 3/16/2025 5:43 pm |
The A-10, once a reliable recipient of a handful of tournament bids every year, has now been reduced to a pathetic one-bid league. I believe this is the first time the A-10 has been a one-bid league in god knowns how long.
This all lays at the feet of Bernadette McGlade, who spends way too much time honoring athletics flacks instead of working to get more tournament bids for her member schools. This is the only thing that matters---how many teams you get to the dance. It attracts better coaches, players, better salaries, better opponents, the list goes on and on.
McGlade seems to skate by while the A-10 becomes a smoldering wreckage of a once great college basketball league. Fukk you, Bernadette. Leave already.

What do you guys think about Bamisile this weekend? Didn't play well today
7 pt, 3 to, 1 blk, 3 rb, 40% shooting today against Loyola. All below season averages.

George Mason pretty much picked up where they left off. They opened the game on a 12-0 run vs St Joe, just like they opened the second half with a 12-0 run on us. They led by as much as 18, though St Joes made a couple of run - but unlike GW, SJU could never get the lead the entire game.
I’m rooting for Mason tomorrow in the hope that the A10 can get two teams in the dance. Plus, I’d love to see that defense go against some team like Michigan or UCLA, and would love to see Haynes get some national attention. That guy is really good.
Also rooting for the upset tomorrow. Probably the only two teams the league gets unfortunately. I'm so old I remember when the A-10 would get at least four teams!

Well they got punched in the face, then punched again, kept getting punched, and had no response. Generous interpretation is a little fatigue after last night and GMU fresh after the double bye. Credit where it's due to GMU, that was a heck of a second half.
Jalen Haynes had the game I expected him to have at Smith Center. Whatever CC did for that game, he didn't do again (or maybe Skinn changed something up). I remember watching Haynes during warmups and thinking that dude was talented offensively and was going to light us up. Well he didn't do it that game for some reason, but he did last night. He basically bullied all GW defenders, including Castro, all game and even had quite a few great jump shots. Hard to stop a talent like Haynes but I was pretty disappointed he had such a great night when he didn't play well at all at Smith Center.

Your previews are great and I have a lot of respect for your analyses, but we’ll have to agree to disagree on this point. GW fell behind by so much that they were forced to press and trap to try to force turnovers. The problem with trapping is that leaves someone open, and Mason was doing a good job finding that guy. If the game was close, they would have played a very different style of defense to close the game out. I didn’t see any players give up.
I don't know if I'd call it "giving up" but the players did have cement shoes in the second half when the game was basically out of reach. I can specifically remember two instances late in the second half where a GMU guard basically dribbled around in the backcourt before finding a seam to the lane, which seemed to have parted like Moses parted the Red Sea, while the rest of the GW defenders stared and watched him go to the hoop for an easy layup. The game was basically over and we're just nitpicking, but it was hard not to notice this.

Wow, what a finish! We had seen that movie so many times: GW has a sizable lead in the second half, only to blow it and lose. But this time, stud Trey Autry bails us out with not one, not two but THREE huge three pointers to seal the victory! WOW
Props to CC for getting his first A-10 tournament win (I believe). Was great to see GW fans getting loud at the end of the game.
