Re: Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament.

They blew the lead. Can't get a rebound. Sick.

Thank God for Trey Autry…

They need to carry Autry back to Smitty on their shoulders.

Time to put these guys away. Really should be ahead by more, now is the time to go for the juggular lest Fordham decides to claw their way back in to this game with under 5 to go.

Glad Trey Autry listened to me. He gets a steak dinner. As for the rest of the team, what was with the blown lead?!?!? Mason is salivating to see GW after that. Shake it off, move on, but do not feel confident.

Re: Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament.

Its win and advance now.  It doesn't need to be pretty, but it also doesn't need to be that ugly.
Let's see another win tomorrow.

Re: Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament.

At the end we were trying to run clock out. That is not a good.  Without Trey it would have been a real ugly postseason.

Re: Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament.

I blame the announcers 😂 The second they started analyzing how we matched up with George Mason with 9 freaking minutes left, I knew we were in trouble.

As for Jackie Johnson, because I know people here don’t follow other teams/players too closely, this was an insane career game.  He’s a 32.9% three point shooter on the season and he’s only had 1 game all season where he hit more than half his threes and 1 other where he hit half.  In every other game, he shot under 50%.  Just an incredible performance by him to keep them in the game.

Otherwise, a strong all around effort by everyone - Castro with 17 and 8 in an off game, Buchanan with the big first half, Hutch with the clutch FTs at the end, Hansen with the nice all around game, Jones and Gerald with some nice buckets. And overall the team defense was pretty good and it would have no sweat without Jackie J turning into Step Curry.

Edited: I accidentally said the announcers talked about how we matched up with Fordham, instead of Mason. For those who were there, not watching, they basically called game with 9 minutes left.

Re: Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament.

It was good, then you literally could feel the air go out of us in the arena.
A GW game should come with instructions on where the nearest defibrillator is.
And then Trey! It was a team effort, but his 3 point shooting saved us.
Gotta do a lot better vs. Mason. They're not a 14-point seed (playing their heart out or not) and
they're well rested.
That will be the real test of the tournament--and the season.

GW Basketball Insiders episode from tonight: https://www.youtube.com/live/ynmK8yFa6fs?si=u85u6cE1bsm9gMA9

Another relatively brief one but we talked about Trey Autry's heroics and did a bit of a preview of the Mason game tomorrow. Thrilling game today (and for a bit it was in all the wrong ways) and I'm very proud of this team for pulling it out. So so much fun watching a GW basketball conference tournament win at Capital One Arena. Let's hope for another one tomorrow!

Re: Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament.

For you old timers, this game to me was reminicient of Kwame Evans' 3 point shooting performance vs. New Mexico State in Jarvis' first NCAA tournament.   No, the game wasn't as big and the opponant was not as good, but just as that game defined Evans career at GW, I felt that this game will now define Autry's career here.  For me, there is very little in the world of sports that is more exciting than when a shooter gets red hot, espeically when the game is on the line.  Trey absolutley had to have icewater in his veins when he took those 3 shots and buried them all.

Re: Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament.

Great to finally make it to the quarterfinals after a long time! Seeing virtually the entire frontcourt in foul trouble (Jun's did come a bit later) didn't feel good, especially since GW hasn't really had to deal with that for much of the season but credit CC and the team for adjusting. Going into a game against Mason, it would have also been nice to not have to exert extra effort at the end to pull it out given their physicality, but most importantly the team survived and advanced. Passing was very good for most of the game - you can never complain about an 18 assist performance. Jacoi was very good today outside of a couple FTs and quietly the x-factor. Far and away his best finishing at the hoop all season. It's not even close.

Offensively, GW struggled to crack Fordham's zone for a lot of the second half. I don't know why, but a random play with just under 11 minutes left to go stuck out. Ty was wide open from three on one side, but never got the ball as much of the action was squeezed towards the other part of the halfcourt. Sean would undershoot a decent-ish look from the corner during a time when GW had gone on a good run but that felt like a momentum killer (as was CJ's midrange shot later in the paint during Fordham's rally where the ball didn't really move in the halfcourt). Jun needed to get the ball in the middle of the zone a lot earlier and a lot more often. Good to see him be more aggressive today. The two man game between Jun and Slim wasn't the sharpest either late.

It cannot be understated how big those Tricky threes were at the end. During tight contests earlier in the year, it looked like this team was terrified to pull the trigger on such shots. Yeah this isn't a great shooting team but it's hard to pass up a good look, especially when it's Autry that has it. It definitely reminded me of the Illinois State game from earlier in the year with the explosion at the end. Defensively, I thought GW had a bit of a disappointing performance. Give credit to Fordham's guards. Johnson and Medor did well in terms of taking care of the ball. However, GW's traps felt half-hearted. The Rams were playing their second game and I can't help but feel like the Revs didn't fully take advantage when it comes to forcing turnovers. Unfortunately, it felt like Autry was the guilty party there a few times during Fordham's run (like he was there, but didn't really commit to the trap) but since he was the hero late I won't harp too much on it. The team needs to be more disruptive tomorrow though against GMU who can be shaky with the rock.

Re: Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament.

Although once again I did not see it advertised, there will be another pregame reception before the Mason game, again at The Tard House at 3:30.  Yesterday’s reception was very good.   I recommend attending if possible.

New Mexico Lobos. They were a 5
seed. We a 12. We lost to RI in our tourney and didn't know if we would make the tourney. Have to thank Poog once more for providing me with a tape of the game in Arizona. Went on to play Fab 5 in Seattle.

Re: Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament.

George Mason pretty much picked up where they left off. They opened the game on a 12-0 run vs St Joe, just like they opened the second half with a 12-0 run on us.  They led by as much as 18, though St Joes made a couple of run - but unlike GW, SJU could never get the lead the entire game.

I’m rooting for Mason tomorrow in the hope that the A10 can get two teams in the dance.  Plus, I’d love to see that defense go against some team like Michigan or UCLA, and would love to see Haynes get some national attention. That guy is really good.

Also rooting for the upset tomorrow. Probably the only two teams the league gets unfortunately. I'm so old I remember when the A-10 would get at least four teams!

Re: Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament.

What do you guys think about Bamisile this weekend? Didn't play well today

7 pt, 3 to, 1 blk, 3 rb, 40% shooting today against Loyola. All below season averages.

Re: Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament.

Mason’s good. VCU better. They putting the mason pg on roller skates. Plus they’ve made Haynes uncomfortable.

VCU should win comfortably. So sadly the A10’ll be a 1 bid league.

The fact that VCU is a “I don’t know” bubble team for an at large is proof of the extent to which the power schools have a lock on what was an incredible tournament.

Having quality low and mid majors clean out the power schools frauds, in addition to a few true upsets powered the first 4 days. Clearing the way the quality teams to fight it out.

Now we are going get lots of 4th time this-year matchups sold to us as upsets
