I've been wondering too. I got this off of ESPN, though it doesn't help at all:

Watanabe is set to miss a 16th straight game, and there's no apparent reason why he's out other than it being a personal matter. As such, his next chance to feature will come against Detroit on Friday, but it wouldn't be shocking if he ends up being ruled out for the rest of the season sooner rather than later.

FYI: there is a GW Sports page on facebook with 12,000 members...george washington university revolutionaries.
To buff up GW Hoops, you might want to join it, and let them know about the board. Talk about the games or players with a "I read this on GW HOOPS" message in the middle. 12K would be a pretty good number for this board.

SJP got suspended for 90 days.

"GW said in a statement that the group's 'actions violated university policies,' The Hill reported. 'As a result, effective immediately, the university has prohibited SJP from participating in activities on campus.'The suspension will last for 90 days and bars the group from sponsoring or organizing on campus events or 'posting communications on university property through May 20, 2024.'

'We see this very clearly as being a political response to a growing wave of backlash and repression towards Palestinian organizing, but specifically the Palestinian student movement that’s been happening the past few weeks,' the group told the GW Hatchet.

"Good news" for everyone...it seems as if anyone can be part of the renaming of the George Washington Colonials. Students, Alum, those who live nearby, those who live far away. With our fanbase, I'm guessing that Dayton, or maybe even UNCC will name us. That could be great!

To be honest, I am very disappointed in the GWU. Not only for this, but all of the other mistakes that they have made through the years.

Oh yeah, I found this as an ad on Facebook. Wonderful.

The way the men's team has played the last few years suggests that we, the fans, are the oppressed peoples that the University was concerned about. As for a new moniker, almost every George Washington high school I could find has "Eagles" as their moniker. Looks like AU has screwed us out of that one.

With the cash that GW has, we could buy out AU. have another campus, and take their eagle.

As for waiting a year, I agree with you. If Colonials is so offensive, they should get rid of it immediately, and call us the Basketball team, as did the Redskins. If it's bad, but we can wait a year, it's not that bad at all, and maybe check with people outside of the complainants. If I remember correctly, the American Indian population (based on polls) had less than 10% who found Redskins offensive. Hardly a majority.

Of course those that are offended by the Colonials must be against the revolution, and would rather be British, because those colonials made America. They declared our independence, formulated our Constitution and our Bill of Rights. They later called for the end of slavery. Their ancestors joined a world war that was against evil people who wanted to end the world of an entire race.

But what does the truth or facts have to do with it. When we continue to have crime and murder rates increasing, a world war that is going on (everything but multiple areas of battle...clearly it's Russia, Iran, No Ko, and China, against the rest, and the areas of battles can open up in a moment). World wide inflation. A University that is pretty much too expensive for the 'masses' to pay for. An athletic department that can't get itself together.

Maybe there are other, more important things to spend their time and money and effort dealing with. Tutor some inner city kids. Build some programs that will help the poor. Clean the streets. Anything. But all they are doing is the least they can do, and fighting those who don't care, but are wealthy enough to pr

I might accept Independenzzz!
Maybe Capitols (have to share with the Caps), Foxes (had a lot of rabid ones around of late), maybe surveyer's (for George's first job).
Doesn't matter. They'll pick somethng, and we'll have to live with it.

"I attended GW at a time when I was unable to set foot in my country of birth because the USA had installed a brutal dictatorship (ie Yanqui imperialism). Since then, I have lived in countries where the USA funded civil wars to "protect its interests", wars that killed people and continue to create hardships and limit economic development due to the damage they brought to the countries.
I know the difference between a "Colonial" and a "colonist". I know the difference between a tricornered hat and pith helmet. I know the difference between an IPA and the CIA. Every week, I meet with a group of people who had live electric wires strapped to their genitalia with the full knowledge, approval and funding of the government of the United States. None of them are confused by the difference, either.
Everyone arrives on their college campus with the fantasy of changing the mascot or renaming the quad or tossing out the evil Dean. "Colonials" may not be a totally rad nickname, but it is not an endorsement of imperalism, a symbol of opression or an offense to downtrodden masses. Had the arguement been "it is antiquated and lame" I might have given it some thought.
Until you have looked down the barrel of a rifle held by a soldier who feels that you (his/her compatriot) is an enemy and that a far-away government in another country that provided the rifle is a friend, then you cannot claim to have any knowledge of what "invokes" imperialsm or not."

GW alum abroad...Well said! We've gone off the rails and the only thing awaiting us is how bad the crash will be. Babies without food, people who can't afford to go to work due to the price of gasoline. Yeah, yeah. But we must worry about the name of a mascot of a school. And then spending a lot of money to change it.

Do I really care? No. What bothers me though is allowing the masses (which are probably at best a third of the whole) to demand and whine and change things because of what THEY think. Right or wrong 'we' cower and sh

I'm always looking for an international team. And you're right, our biggest success comes from teams with an international flair. I still want that Argentine big man from UVA (I think). Where's Pato when we need him?

Squid...I've said before (on the old GWHoops site...may Herve rest in peace!), one of the ways that I can't understand why the Athletic Department and the school don't use, is the abilities of the student body. We have people learning business. Why don't we have contests, or extra credits for the best advertising, or even new ideas?

Why don't we give out student awards during halftime, and at the end of a game? It will get more non basketball students to attend.

Why don't we address the alumni, and ask for free instruction in their areas of expertise...for the players and students. Even if it's just a recruitment, or a look how far I've gone since I was here, speech. It will help get the students find pride in the school, as well as bring back the alums. Give the alumni speakers free tickets for a game for their time. Mention them at the game. Make them feel like a big shot.

Having posters all over the campus advertising each game, drawn or developed by students. There's usually one poster on the side of Smith Center, but there should be posters all over the campus.

We also have photography classes, and TV and communication classes, Use those fresh ideas to build a fan base. Have commercials and interviews. Have a campus tv station with sports and information. Interviews of the players. Air it throughout the campus.

And that's just a start. Show interest in the team. Try to get the Profs at the games. Have "Colombian College" day at the game. And then a "School of Law" day at the game. Have a quick CC v SL basketball game during half time (CC would kill 'em.)

Okay, enough. But you get the idea. They need to work to get people on campus and off campus to attend the games. Now I know this is what they can do to build the team. But we can do it too. Squid, when's the last time you've talked to your profs, or spoken to a class (it could have been today, but you get the point).

Thanks Mayhem. That makes more sense, but still not a lot of sense. Any way that you look at NCCA sports, as far as I'm concerned, it's like looking at the way the Mafia worked. Instead of killings, you have firings, so at least you don't have the loss of life!  I'd like to see the legislators (both State and Federal) to really start treating all sports like utility companies, and passing some fair and decent rules and make them follow it, but $$ will never let that happen. (Sorry, kinda moving off topic there!)

I'm wondering, if Caputo just signed a 2 year extension, and JC has two years left on his contract, wouldn't that mean that we'd have to pay off JC for his two years, and then pay off Miami for Caputo's next two years, and then of course pay Caputo his salary? Plus pay the search team to find someone we've already decided on?  Sounds too much like the House of Cards to me, but the NCAA is corrupt anyway...but I don't see GWU paying out that much.

Mike Hall is right that the alum players need to be kept part of the team. I watched the end of UVA's game (NIT) last night and saw that they have a 7'1" Argentinian center. Why does UVA have him, when we have Pato who is on the Argentinian Olympic team as an alum? Remember when we used to hang various flags to show our 'international' nature of the team? Not so long ago, and we actually had some good players and teams then.

With that said, every time we are on a coach search, my first choices are Alums. Yeah, I know that Ewing is an alum for GT, but that's the point. I'd rather have a bad coach who is an alum, than to have a bad coach who has no desire to succeed, except for their own ego.

Mike Brown - like 18 years in the NBA, and various coaching jobs after. He's getting old though.
Pops - he has the ability to coach.
Joe Mac - Last I heard coaching high school after asst coaching GW.
Mike Hall - great international career. A good guy, and a team player.

I could go on. Some of our international players could be good choices. The point I'm trying to make is we keep making the same choices, picking from the same pile, and having the same problems. I think that we should change it up and bring in new blood, for both our team, as well as the NCAA.

If GT could wipe the floor with us, even in their bad days (like now), I have to ask, why don't they want to play us in pre conf games?
If they could beat us any time they choose, why did we clean their clock when they were at their best, or at least better?
Sorry, but the facts indicate to me that GT and GW are closer to equal than not.
As for the schools themselves, I agree that GT has the rep of being better, but the reality is that we used to be, at least equal. Not quite sure how we are now, with the push towards STEM.

The important thing about sarcasm is selling it so that the reader just isn't sure that the author is being sarcastic. Jonathan Swift (if I remember correctly) wrote an essay on why we should eat children. It was perfect.
Steve, I don't know if you are brilliant, or an idiot, but either way, I got a chuckle out of your post. And I've spent a lot of money since my vac...does that count?

Wow...I agree with the Dude!

I would love for GW to go international again. Yinka, Koul, Pops, and Larsen. Some of our best big men, though I'd still be happy with Mike Brown, and Tyler Cavenaugh. Just seems as if we can't get them right now. And we can't forget the non big men international players. International would be great, but a transfer international probably doesn't mean we're going in that direction.

So far I've found that Yuta is playing on team Japan, with a Hugh Watanabe (his brother perhaps?)

Pato is playing for team Argentina.

That's it, but not bad when you think that there aren't that many teams, and there are a lot of NBA players. I'll be you there are a lot of good NCAA teams that aren't represented.

Nigeria looks good, but my $$ would be on the US.

Dan, I wasn't making a comment about that at all. I was just saying that the moving of players hurts the fans, and that the NBA doesn't do that in the way that the NCAA is doing now (hopfully there will be a change post covid).

But since you brought it up, and I don't stand on your island or on the mainland...I guess I'm all wet. I do wonder, where it will end? Remember the jocks in your high school...three sport letters and all? They sell tickets to those events. Shouldn't they get a cut? And what about the bench sitters? Do they get the same amount of money as the 'stars'? What about the money that the little league pulls from their little 7-11's at the field? Shouldn't the money go to the players? Grandma and Grandpa wouldn't be there buying bottled water if Jr. wasn't pitching that day. I know I'm going far, but really, if you do one, it's going to keep going. It always does.
