Patricio Garino to play for the World Championship

Despite a sub-par game for Pato in the semifinal win over USA-killers France, he and Argentina will play Spain on Sunday in the Final of the Basketball World Cup. The game is at 8am Eastern.

Re: Patricio Garino to play for the World Championship

Garino did not score today and played the least minutes of any game so far. He got into early foul trouble and did not play all of the second and most of the third quarter. As is all games, he was there to start and to finish.

In a post game interview, the coach cited this team as the best he has coached. In spite of so many great players on the team, he only mentioned one of them.

"To close the dialogue, the Sheep (Coach Hernandez) provided a vision of the idiosyncrasy of the team. “We are unbearable, at the last minute Fournier could not get out of the bottom in the face of Garino's pressure, it is a bit of a sample of who we are."

Forgive the Google translation of the interview, but it essentially says Garino's defense is a reflection of who this team is. Coach must like Pato, because post Serbia game, after giving props to Luis Scola, his next sentence was "and Pato Garino was amazing". We should all be proud, regardless of the outcome on Sunday.

Great quote.

Garino only played 19 minutes with the foul trouble and didn’t score, but was +17, second best on the team by far.   That stat probably reflects the outsized influence had on the game.

I didn’t see it, but I do like hearing that he locked Fournier down - Evan fournier is a solid nba player who has averaged at least 15 ppg in the nba for the last 5 years.

Pato was completely overmatched.  A couple of fouls, a couple of turnovers, a shot blocked and yanked in the middle of the first quarter.  Spain up 43-31 at halftime.

Not much better in the second half.  Pato only played the first part of the third quarter. Spain controlled the game and win the Basketball World Cup 95-75.

Re: Patricio Garino to play for the World Championship

Argentina had a great run but will not be happy with its play today, losing by 20 to Spain (which never trailed in the game). Final book on Pato´s game: under 11 mins played, zero points, two rebounds, two turnovers, three fouls and a +/- of -11 to go with his lay-up getting swatted away. To add salt to the wound, his back up Gabriel Deck was Argentina´s lone bright spot today with 24 points.
Next year, both Pato and Yuta will be back in action playing for gold in the XXXII Olympic Games.
