Re: Days Left Until Opening Day

Tex Silverman was the first pick of the 18th round of the NBA draft which I point out to illustrate that the NBA Draft used to have many rounds (though not as many teams).  Brian Magid, Mike Zagardo, Les Anderson, Bob and Pat Tallent, Joe and John Holup, and Walt Szerbiack were all drafted.  As was Yinka Dare.  So that brings us to 18 when added to BM's list.

Yinka!  I knew I was missing someone.

Re: Days Left Until Opening Day

My bad, its actually 27 with Yuta. The teams website has yet to update that.
https://gwsports.com/sports/2018/7/23/sports-m-baskbl-archive-pros-html.aspx

The Colonials have scored 26 total points in a game 23 times! None are later than 1940 however lol.

Re: Days Left Until Opening Day

25 days until opening night

Former Colonial Carl Elliot rocked the #25 jersey while in Foggy Bottom.
As well, Patricio Garino led the Colonials with 25 points in a huge victory over VCU at home in the 2013-2014 season. That night, the Smith Center had its largest crowd (4874) since the night when Carl Elliot scored a game winner over Charlotte in 2006!

Re: Days Left Until Opening Day

So a correct one for day 26 would have been: 26 points, the margin of victory of GW over UMassholes at the Smith Center in the 1988-89 season.

24 days until opening nightSirValiant Brown averaged 24.6 points per game as a freshman during the 1999-2000 season. Despite the gaudy scoring totals, Brown shot just 33.2% from the field and 26.4% from downtown. That team went 15-15 (9-7 in A10 Play).

23 Days until Opening NIght

The Colonials have 23 all time wins against conference mate La Salle, with their first win against the Explorers 23 years ago 92-83, as well as this past season 59-56.

22 days until Opening Night

Former Colonial Joe McDonald rocked the #22 Jersey in his four years in Foggy Bottom.
Many will remember his put back at the buzzer against Dayton in the 2014-2015 season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggeqJ5XlgKs

Re: Days Left Until Opening Day

21 days until Opening Night

Kevin Larsen donned the #21 jersey in his time in foggy bottom.
As well, Chris Monroe led the Colonials with 21 PPG in the 2001-2002 season! That season was not a strong one for the Colonials, going 12-16(5-11) in Karl Hobbs first season as Head Coach.

20 Days until Opening Night

On January 10, 2008, the Colonials set an NCAA record when they held Saint Louis to 20 points in a 49-20 win.

Re: Days Left Until Opening Day

18 days until opening night

Here's one for the old timers. In 1956-1957, Gene Guarilia led the Colonials with 18 RPG. The 447 boards he had that season is the 9th most in Southern Conference history as of today.

Re: Days Left Until Opening Day

Hope all is okay with GW18.  This was a great way to countdown the days

Re: Days Left Until Opening Day

Thanks for checking in PKGW. I've been insanely busy the past two weeks and its been hard to find time to come here. With 8 days left, ill get back on track.

8 days until opening night!

GW was an 8 seed (they were robbed) in the magical 2005-2006 season that saw the Colonials go 27-3 and fall to the #1 seed Duke in the second round of the 2006 NCAA tournament.

Re: Days Left Until Opening Day

Am admittedly a pale substitute for GW18 but I took a quick stab at filling in what might have been said for GW18's missed days, days 9-17.  Here we go:

17 days left: GW alum and legend Red Auerbach drafts the greatest #17 ever to play the game of basketball, John Havlicek.

16 days left: In 2005-06, GW finished with a 16-0 conference record, joining Temple, St. Joe's and Xavier as the only conference schools to ever finish with a perfect regular season conference record. (Honorable mention: Greg Collucci fires 16 three point attempts in a game vs. Yale, sinking 8.  Both are school records.)

15 days left: In 1990, Ellis McKennie dished out 15 assists vs. SBU which remains the school record for most assists in a game.

14 days left:  I think GW18 spared us the obvious answer to "27" but I won't be so nice.  GW lost 14 in a row in 1988-89, still a school record.

13 days left: Trivia question:  Who has the school record for most consecutive FG's made with 13?  Is it: a) Mike Brown, b) Yinka Dare, c) Rob Diggs, or d) David Pellom?  The answer later in this post.

12 days left: Did you know that GW has an all-time record of 12-2 against Clemson?   Which begs the question of why we keep playing South Carolina when we should be playing Clemson.

11 days left: There are 11 players who have scored at least 1,500 points throughout their GW careers.  They are: Chris Monroe, Joe Holup, Mike Brown, Pat Tallent, Kwame Evans, Shawnta Rogers, Alexander Koul, Yegor Mescherikov, Dirkk Surles, Corky Devlin and Patricio Garino.

10 days left.  In 1976 against James Madison, Kevin Hall blocked 10 shots which remains a school record.

9 days left.  Lasan Kromah came up with 9 steals in a 2011 game vs. UAB, the most in a game by a Colonial.

Finally, the trivia answer is c).  Rob Diggs made 13 consecutive baskets over a two game period during the 2007-08 season which is a school record.

A much lazier effort on my part than GW18 but at least those missing countdown days are now filled.

Re: Days Left Until Opening Day

7 days until opening night! We are just a week away folks.

The first basketball coach in program history, J. Kramer, won 7 games in his two seasons (7-12 record) as Colonials Head Coach from 1906-1908. After going 6-2 in the 1906-1907 season, the Colonials fell to 1-10 in 1907-1908. The Colonials did go 3-2 against Georgetown in those two years.

I'm unable to find anywhere about what Coach Kramer's first name is, but if anyone has that information please share!

Re: Days Left Until Opening Day

6 days until opening night!

This one will be quite obvious but the highest ranking in program history came in the 2005-2006 season with GW reaching #6 in the polls! GW has also played in the NIT 6 times in program history, going 6-5 (and you can guess which season the bulk of those wins came in)

Re: Days Left Until Opening Day

5 days until opening night!

The Colonials have won at least 24 games five times in program history. 2015-16, 2013-14, 2005-06, 1997-98, and 1954-55!

Re: Days Left Until Opening Day

4 days till opening night!

Justin "Juice" Williams wears #4 and is expected to play a strong role in his senior season.

Four Colonials have hit 200+ triples in their GW careers.
1. T.J. Thompson (2001-05) - 229
2. Shawnta Rogers (1995-99) - 223
3. Kwame Evans (1992-96) - 220
4. Chris Monroe (1999-03) - 203
