Very surprising given how poorly Duquesne looked for most of the off-season. Max the only player to not score but he did add 4 rebounds. Looks like he was relegated to coming off the bench.

Off the bench is the understatement of the year. All of six minutes played tonight. Methinks not a coincidence that they started winning when he started sitting. What’s the over/under on him either being dismissed or quitting?

Re: Other Games Thread 2024/25

UIC handed Drake their first loss of the season.

The two takeaways are:
1) it's hard to win on the road regardless of competition, and
2) our new AD Lipitz seems to have made a decent hire in Rob Ehsan so far. The Flames are #171 on KenPom so far playing a borderline top 100 OOC schedule in his first year there.

Re: Other Games Thread 2024/25

Providence over UConn would be great for the A10

Re: Other Games Thread 2024/25

No A-10 action tonight, but I just checked the top 25 scoreboard and saw that no.1 ranked Tennessee lost by 30 to Florida (73-43). I can't remember the last time a top ranked team was beaten by a margin that large. Apologies in advance to Tennessee Colonial.

Re: Other Games Thread 2024/25

Quite the night in the A10.

Dayton loses back-to-back games as they fall to UMass
St. Joes loses to Duquesne
Richmond loses to Mason by 6
VCU beats Fordham by 12 (all without running water)

Bonnies lose at home to LaSalle.  This league is defined by ultra parity.  Anyone can beat anyone, any time.  Need to bring your best game each time out.

FQ - that off balance banked 3 was crazy.  Bonnie’s learn the hard way. It to leave it up to chance

Who lost at home in OT to Rhode Island today. Wide open tourney in D.C. Get your all-tourney tickets at a discounted price. Anybody’s NCAA bid to win

Re: Other Games Thread 2024/25

Some notable results over the past few days:

- Gonzaga lost two straight games in conference to Oregon State and Santa Clara last week. The last time they lost two games in a row during conference play was 11 years ago.

- Doug Gottlieb's Green Bay squad continues to trend further into "Nobody U" territory with their 15th straight loss. They last won on November 19th against SIU Edwardsville.

- DePaul won their first Big East game at Georgetown Friday 73-68. The Hoyas are improved but still not all the way there yet.

- Howard has lost two games in a row to D2 schools (Bowie State and Morehouse). The Bison have a player in Blake Harper who is almost certainly a transfer up candidate. As a freshman, the DC native is averaging nearly 19 ppg.

- West Virginia upset #2 Iowa State and Vanderbilt topped #6 Tennessee. Darian DeVries and Mark Byington are both proving their success at Drake and James Madison last year were no flukes. #7 Marquette also lost, meaning that three top ten teams lost on Saturday. Marquette's loss puts St. John's in first in the wide open Big East. SJU won by almost 30 on the road against a Seton Hall squad low on NIL funds. UConn is not great defensively this year (in fact GW is actually ahead of them on that end per KenPom) making the conference a true toss-up. The Huskies fell to Creighton at home.

- Miami (FL) may not go down as the worst power conference basketball team in history, but defensively they may take the title. They gave up 117 points to SMU at home and lost by 43. The Mustangs shot nearly 70% from the field. If that's not a sign of a team giving up I don't know what does. The Hurricanes are now 341st on defense according to KenPom.

- Calipari is off to a rough start at Arkansas. The Razorbacks are currently 0-5 in the SEC.

- Going to skip over most conference results, but it's getting clearer that GW just ran into a Duquesne program that's on a hot streak right now. They crushed the Bonnies by 18 at home. Max knocked down five threes in the contest.

- Rhody is 3-3 in conference, but they have certainly been lucky in close games. Sebastian Thomas helped them defeat Davidson on Saturday 92-90 with yet another late game winner. Funnily enough, I think the URI game was the one time GW actually closed a game well.

- Mississippi Valley State is back at it again, losing three straight SWAC games by 25+ points. It's crazy how they can't even be competitive against teams at the bottom of D1. Against the second worst team, Arkansas Pine Bluff, MVSU would be 14 point underdogs on a neutral site. Just crazy. Per KenPom, this year's Delta Devil squad is the third worst since 1997, only trailing 2013 Grambling State (which may never be topped) and 2021 Mississippi Valley State. The Athletic released a very sad article about the program situation a couple weeks back.

Re: Other Games Thread 2024/25

A couple of names worth snickering about.  Doug Gottlieb actually does have some interesting things to say from time to time but his hubris often gets the best of him.  UWGB:  maybe having your head basketball coach also host a daily national radio show isn't the smartest of ideas.  Calipari struggling is an absolute pleasure.

Most people agree that: a) revenue-producing college athletes should be paid and b) their compensation should not look anything like what we're seeing.  Athletes are getting paid to play, period, something that was explicitly discouraged when NIL was conceived.  What has happened at Miami is one of several cautionary tales.  Nijel Pack may have helped take an Elite 8 Miami team without him to a Final 4 team with him, but his exorbitant compensation ruffled many feathers among players who after all, had reached the Elite 8 without him.  It has all gone downhill very quickly for the Canes ever since who now seem hell-bent at building/paying for a football championship leaving the hoopsters in the dust.  Where is Levinator to weigh in when you need him?

Rhody’s luck ran out last night. Blown out of their own gym by 24 to VCU. A remarkable 6 assists vs. 27 turnovers. Yes, you read that correctly.

Re: Other Games Thread 2024/25

After a brief renaissance strating with the GW game, Max Edwards is now back to 7 minutes, 0 points, 1 assist and 2 rebounds last night.   Clearly the talent is there, but damn if I can figure out why the production is so lacking.

1/30/2025 12:33 pm  #118

Re: Other Games Thread 2024/25

Because Max lacks the skill and interest in team ball.  He can rebound, drive, and be a streaky shooter.
But he's a horrible passer and a poor defender which limits his effectiveness as a team player.

And with the win, UCONN remains firmly in 4th place in the Big East while Marquette falls 1 game out of first place.
