Stepping down today. Wonder if he recommends CC to replace him…

Losses to Mt. St Mary’s and Charleston Southern we’re too much to bear.

Mind posting the link to that Board? I found one site but no mention of CC. Lots of interest in Drake coach

From what I’ve seen, looks like CC is the backup option if they can’t get a high profile name

Re: Jim Larranaga steps down

I have a hard time seeing Miami offering Caputo unless we end up having a really strong conference run (Top 4 in conference, semi-finalist in the A10 tournament at least).

Re: Jim Larranaga steps down

1) Wow. In the middle of the season, unexpected, however much they were struggling. Isn't that something you'd see more in the NBA than college?
Larranaga always seemed like a good guy both reputation-wise and in person. Though I'm sure the last few NIL years were another world, even though they paid really big money to some players.
2) Just weatherwise, one would think Miami would be a lure for a big name coach.
Still, CC would definitely be gone and in that seat, if our record was better. But if there ever was fortuitous timing for him to leave as our coach before conference play--and maybe Larranaga had this in mind, it would be now, when we are 11-2.
Though it seems like our schedule, as such, is getting notice from even casual observers,
so the GW record as a mirage will likely get scrutiny.
3) If approached, CC should do what's best for him and his family.
Much like players rarely have loyalty (except for our great Jun), there is no loyalty for coaches.
Larranaga's midseason departure demonstrates that.
It's certainly possible CC might well be able to do better at a higher level he is very familiar with. He's a smart and good guy.
One of our former coaches (and us, for nearly a decade now) learned a bitter lesson about turning down a much better job.

Re: Jim Larranaga steps down

I would be very surprised if Miami hires Caputo. Since I started following GW in 1991, only one coach has "moved up" after leaving GW, Mike Jarvis, and things didn't go so well for him at St. Johns. Actually, he's the only coach that voluntarily left coaching the team... It would be nice to think of GW as a stepping stone for coaches to move on to better jobs, but history does not support that assertion.

John Keuster wound up having a good career in the NBA, even becoming a head coach at one point (of course, it took about 20 years for him shake the 1-27 season and get a head coaching shot).
For some reason, Tom Penders was allowed to return to coaching and ended up at Houston (I am not so sure I would ever have allowed him back on a college campus, much less on to the faculty, after his stint at GW).
Your point is well taken. I do think we will see both MoJo and Jamion back in the head coaching ranks in the coming years (if they are willing to deal with the NIL cesspool), but unless Miami (Fla) is defunding its hoops program to siphon more money off to the football team I do not think we need to worry that much about CC getting poached this year.

Re: Jim Larranaga steps down

Love how real, and to me honest, this Caputo quote is in the AP story:

"I owe my professional career to him,” said George Washington coach Chris Caputo, a longtime Miami assistant under Larrañaga. “I learned so much and I certainly wouldn’t be where I am without him and his family. As it relates to Miami, with all respect to the people there before him, he took what was essentially an irrelevant program and turned it into a Sweet 16, Elite Eight and Final Four program. At Miami, that was unheard of. He raised the bar for basketball at the University of Miami from here on out.”

Re: Jim Larranaga steps down

I am not worried about Coach Caputo returning to Miami. His sights are on GW's future.

Re: Jim Larranaga steps down

GW18. I saw the same YouTube video. Nice to see that Cris Stock (Miami) really would like to poach Caputo.  And Buchanan, Jones, and Castro.

Re: Jim Larranaga steps down

Not sure what to say except this is life.  Big schools poach both coaches and players from smaller programs and have more money to do so.  Sure this is a bit different given the Miami connection.  But the reality is that if Chris does well, he will eventually be hearing from P4 + BE schools who may have an interest in hiring him.

I absolutely take CC at his word when he points out that he's building something at GW, unfinished business, etc.  I'll also add that there are other personal factors that would likely give DC an edge over Miami.  Nevertheless, if things reach the point where CC is offered the chance to triple or quadruple his compensation, it's unrealistic to think that he would never strongly consider it if not jump at it.  So would every one of us short of some extraordinary circumstances not to.

We can post every article or podcast on the subject but frankly, this is one of those "if it happens, it happens" situations that is completely out of our control.  And if history is an indicator, I can only recall Mike Jarvis as being GW's only coach to leave DC for greener pastures.

Jonathan Tsipis left for Wisconsin (a similar thing to CC and Miami in that he had been an assistant there and GW was his "proving ground"). Not sure Joe McKeown to Northwestern counts since care for his son was a deciding factor, not glory or money.
Jarvis for five or six straight springs/summers would flirt with other schools before returning to GW, until he finally took the plunge at St John´s.
Other sports have seen coaches leave for paychecks that could cover both rent and groceries, something GW has a history of not providing.

Re: Jim Larranaga steps down

If Caputo leaves for Miami, it would be because of what he did there, not here, which would be a shame. If he leaves for any other P5 school, that will be good news because it will mean he was successful enough here to get their attention. As Mayhem notes, Jarvis is the only recent coach on the men's side to voluntarily leave GW for greener pastures.

Re: Jim Larranaga steps down

We should all want CC to be a viable candidate for Miami. That would likely mean we had a good year. GW is not and will never be able to compete with a P4 school that wants one of our coaches. NIL and the potential national stage are big allures, especially for someone who has coached at that level albeit as an a assistant. If CC receives an offer, we will be looking for a new coach. It shouldn't even be a topic for discussion because we should all know how this will end. However, I do think it is far from a sure thing that Miami offers CC the job despite the buzz that is out  there. I would consider it a longshot at this point in time although a strong A-10 finish would change my opinion ... and that's not because CC isn't capable but because I think Miami will think they can attract a bigger name and perhaps not stay within the Larranaga tree.

Re: Jim Larranaga steps down

Funny how after the loss to AU and Richmond many were calling for CC's head and after the Dayton win he gets elevated to coaching royalty.  This is a fluid era in college sports as well as the NBA and NFL.  8 pro football head coaching opportunities available. Does anyone really think Belichick stays at NC for over a year?  My problem with Larranaga was his timing and selfish priority of personal frustration above his players who now are left hanging.
