Opponent Summary: GW WBB travels to western New York for a Saturday afternoon clash with the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies currently stand alone in the basement of the A10, but a win could knock GW down to their level. After losing to UMASS on Wednesday, the Bonnies’ losing streak has reached 8 games, matching GW’s 8-game skid in conference play. SBU’s sole conference win came against St. Louis in early January. The Bonnies are led by pair of guards who average double figures in scoring. Senior Dani Haskell leads the team at 13.7 ppg. Zoe Shaw averages 11.0 ppg. The guard tandem has taken almost 56% of the team’s 3-point attempts this season. Haskell has hit on 49 of 164 attempts (29.9%), while Shaw has hit on 39 of 90 attempts (43.3%). Freshman forward, Caitlin Frost, leads the Bonnies in rebounding at 5.0 rpg, while chipping in 9.0 ppg.  As a team, SBU is currently averaging 55.1 ppg while allowing 71.3 ppg. Their -16.3 ppg game differential is the worst in the A10. They enter the contest with a 37.4% field goal accuracy (31.9% from beyond the arc) and an assist to turnover ratio of .6.

About the game: The battle for the basement pits a pair of teams playing for the future. SBU is a young team that lacks size and has struggled against bigger and more physical teams, which has made them vulnerable on the boards (they are -10 rpg against their opponents) and heavily reliant on 3-point scoring. GW has shown that when their defense stays focused and plays hard, they can keep games close. The defense can’t get complacent and allow the Bonnies’ backcourt to get open looks from beyond the arc. On offense, the Revs can’t be in a hurry, and have to take advantage of their size inside. The inside game should focus on passing, with Mott and Diala hitting players cutting to the basket.  Engel, in particular, should try to take more 2-point attempts, as she has been very accurate with her short jumpers. Reynolds has had solid outings recently, and she should continue to play under control and not try to do too much. With GW’s 3-point shooting woes continuing, the offense has to be supplemented by successful trips to the free throw line. Solid, error-free minutes from the bench would also help to secure a victory.

Both teams want this win badly. GW seems to have the upper hand, but this is a road game, so the Revs have to prepare for the Bonnies’ best shot.

Re: GW versus St. Bonaventure University Game Thread

Final Result: GW wins on the road in Olean 58-49.

Today’s starters: Andrews, Calisto, Engel, Mott and Sierra-Vargas. The game opened with both teams feeling each other out and eventually both teams got their inside game going. At the 4:27 media timeout, the score was knotted up at 6-6. After the timeout, both teams struggled to score, but a Shaw 3-pointer gave the Bonnies a 12-11 edge heading into the 2nd quarter. GW started the 2nd quarter quick with a 6-0 run that forced an SBU timeout. Things didn’t get better for the Bonnies, as the run was extended to 17-0, and with a 21-5 quarter, GW went into the locker room with a 32-17 lead. A trio of Bonnies-- Shaw, Frost, and Hannah Richardson led SBU with 5 points each. For GW, Reynolds had 9 points and Andrews followed with 7 points. GW was only 2-11 from beyond the arc, but held a 25-12 advantage on the boards. GW’s  3rd quarter offense stalled out of the gate, and the Bonnies began to find the range. Andrews missed multiple open attempts, helping SBU to edge closer at 37-25 with 4:47 to go in the quarter. Both teams went back and forth after the timeout and GW entered the 4th quarter with a 43-32 lead. The 4th quarter saw more GW offensive struggles as the Bonnies clogged up the lane and the Revs had no answers on the inside. The Bonnies offense was only slightly better, but they were able to creep up to within 8 points at 50-42 with 3:37 left in the game. After the break, despite several unnecessary GW miscues, the Revs were able to secure the victory 58-49. Richardson led the Bonnies with 13 points and Shaw had 12 points. GW was led by Andrews with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Mott and Reynolds also had double figures, with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Rebounding was key for GW, as they held a 47-26 rebound advantage as well as a 28-16 edge in points-in-the-paint. The bench was also big, securing a 22-4 advantage in scoring. Both Diala and Sims had some good moments, and Lewis’ defense helped to hold Haskell to just 1-7 shooting for the game. Although Andrews led the way, her 5-17 shooting performance included a number of questionable shots that contributed to empty trips to the offensive side of the court. Shot selection (by the entire team) is still an area that needs big improvement. The win helped GW achieve consecutive A10 wins for the first time since closing out the regular season last year with 3 wins.

A trip to Illinois is next up for GW, and the 2nd meeting between the Revs and Loyola Chicago. The Ramblers, who like GW have only 3 wins in the A10 (with St. Joe’s contest pending), is a tier above St. Bonaventure in terms of talent, so look for another closely contested game.
