Good find.
Sadly, unless he's a late bloomer, this tremendous opportunity may have passed
GWIII by.

We are apparently hosting Butler for a visit at some point according to this tweet:
He's also taking visits to Oklahoma St and Butler (the latter of which would be poetic to a certain degree if he ended up there). Averaged 13.6 PPG and 4.6 RPG in 31.3 minutes per game while shooting 36.6% from three this season. Greenbelt, MD native who went to Roosevelt HS and did a post grad year at Fork Union Military Academy. Also he spent a year at State Fair Community College between his time at Fordham and Drexel.
I believe he's got one year of eligibility remaining because he was at Fordham for the 20/21 season. Does he get an extra year of eligibility with the JUCO ruling because of his time at State Fair CC?

So long to Keegan Harvey. Not sure how he has any eligibility left but hope he finds a place to get some regular PT

Former players Jabari West (Central Arkansas) and Daniel Nixon (Hampton) also went portaling today, along with many other players who had GW offers out of HS. Christian May (Towson) and Davin Cosby (Wake Forest) come to mind.
Two names that caught my attention are Rob Dockery (Texas A&M) and Del Jones (Clemson). Dockery may have been a realistic option with the Jun connection at Jackson-Reed but not sure if that is an option now. I was a fan of Jones out of HS and he got some run at Clemson this year.
I don't have anything against Yame Butler - his advanced stats aren't bad and he could very well do well if he transfers here (his ability to use his frame to get downhill is intriguing in a more uptempo system as Drexel plays real slow) but after watching Drumgoole and Moss this season I'm not loving another possible CAA transfer right now. The ppg look very similar as well. The other two schools with scheduled visits (Butler and Oklahoma State) are also cellar dwellers in their conference. Wasn't Moss also considering Butler last offseason? While the three point percentage looks good, he's not a high volume shooter and 2/3 of his makes came in CAA play which is just not a strong conference defensively (or in general nowadays). Conference play also inflated Drumgoole's numbers last year at Delaware. During OOC play, Butler had like three games where he exploded from deep and was quiet in the rest of them which suggests signs of a streaky shooter. Also just 69% from the FT line - that's like GW's average this year which isn't very good for a guard.

1) Wish Keegan well. Don't think he had any hopes here, though was a good
teammate from the bench. He may be able to contribute somewhere else.
2) Rhode Island fans bitter about Freeman. Don't know how he had any more eligibility.
But we'll find out after his 6th school if he's finally done.

He was a freshman in '20-'21 so he has an extra covid year and then sat out '21-'22 under the olden days transfer rules. Good for him, getting a GW degree, and now hopefully getting another free year somewhere to get a master's.

Nothing against him, just really concerned with his inability to go left.

I think you're confusing him with his brother on Rhody: Always Wright.

Fun fact: The Kenny Loggins hit song which was featured in the movie Caddyshack was written about him.

Darren says he still plans on playing in the Crown with the team
First and Foremost I want to thank god for the gift of life and all of the opportunities he has given me with the gift of basketball. This game has truly changed my life for the better and I'll never take any moment of this for granted. I want to say thank you to coach Caputo and his amazing staff for the last 2 years I spent here at GW. I have a great relationship with him and the rest of the staff and I will always have love for those guys regardless. The experiences here at GW has been truly incredible, from the wins in the smith center to the amazing community that surrounds the program. I will forever and always be a revolutionary.
To the city of DC thank you for welcoming me back with open arms and showing me nothing but love and support. All in all I have decided to enter the transfer portal with 2 years of eligibility remaining and looking for somewhere to call home next season. I will still be playing with the team out in Vegas in the Crown Tournament.

Sad, but good find.
This is a big loss for GW.
A healthy DBJ would have been a huge plus next year. And even not healthy, he comes up quite solidly stat-wise.
Unless as often the case, this is about money, which frankly would expect to be diminished post-injury, it does not reflect well on us.
He'd already turned down big money, is a really good guy. And what an amazing goodbye post, even
playing in the tournament, something most portal entries wouldn't do (or maybe even be welcomed).
Truly wish him well and hope he changes his mind.
By not starting Darren, this was predictable.

Thank you Darrin for all you gave to not only GW basketball, but the community. I know he’s going to make us all proud with what he does for the rest of his life.

I will miss Darrin, but I’m not sure I agree that he was solid stat-wise post injury (plus, both he and coach insisted he was fine and his struggles were not due to the earlier injury, but more about adapting to a new role as the team changed its play approach to become more efficient).
If you take only conference play (so all but 1 game being after he lost his starting spot), his numbers were at best average.
His efficiency rating dropped to 100.3, which is a little below average (his first season it was a slight above average 106.5 in conference plsy).
He shot just 45% on two pointers, 23% on threes, and 70% for the line.
His defensive rebounding dropped from 19.5% in conference play last season to 13.4% in conference play this year (for reference, Castro was 22.8% in conference this year).
And his assist rate dropped by a couple points, which could make sense since he didn’t have the ball as much, but his turnover rate actually went up to a way too high 18.9% in conference this year. In fact, as a freshman, he impressively had a higher assist rate than turnover rate in conferenceC but this year, he turned it over almost 7% more possessions than he got an assist.
Again, I really like the kid and hope he changes his mind because I think he’s better than his conference play this year, but I can’t agree that he was solid stat-wise post injury.

I would not take him to Vegas. Let the playing time go to the players who want to be here. In any event, the 2025 version of Buchanan was not very good. I will miss the 2023-2024 version of Buchanan, not so much this year’s version. Would rather see Nessah get his minutes in Vegas
