Re: 2025 Portal Info

This felt inevitable, but man it still hurts. In the transfer portal era, it's hard to get too attached to any players nowadays but the way Jun repped GW athletics in his time here was something few players current and past have done. That's not to mention his community work. The results on the court were tough this year, but I appreciate everything he's done in general for the program. While Jun was surely frustrated at times this year, I didn't see the sulking that Max exhibited on several occasions in his second year in Foggy Bottom.

It's hard to expect any player to stay more than two years nowadays. I think it was reported some 700 players portaled in the first day it was open alone, which easily eclipsed last year's opening day. You can't fault players for testing the market but this whole process is silly. Even players in good situations are going to enter anyways, resulting in a ton of lateral moves (and that is the best case scenario). People joke that you're better off keeping track of who is staying but that may be a better way to track things at this point. Also, the portal should open in mid-April when the season is actually over for everyone.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

@PDTScouting
News: George Washington freshman 🇨🇭 Dayan Nessah has entered the transfer portal, per source

The 6-7 freshman from Geneva, Switzerland played sparingly due to injury’s and sickness throughout the season

Nessah averaged 15 PPG for FC Barcelona’s youth teams and 22.4 PPG in under 18 this summer

Neesah will play in the U19 WC this summer

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Expected this. Wonder where he'll end up? He'll have to find the right fit. After this year stats I can't see him going to a higher league. Way too many unforced turnovers. Wish him all the best.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Nessah? Strange for the fact he was going to get a lot of playing time next year. Crap shoot out there. Sad.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Well my post about rather seeing Nessah  in Vegas didn’t age very well.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Not missing Nessah as much as Jun. A lot of potential, pretty high motor, but not fully formed. Could have seemingly done things and had a chance for playing time if he stayed, yet injury prone.
But what would you say about taking an A-10 caliber player who averaged nearly 11 points and 6 rebounds.
If someone like that came in the portal, we'd be happy.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

This new portal thing is moving way too fast for us old timers like LSF and me. Hey, maybe all the Duke players will transfer to GW next year? Fork out several millions in chunk change. I know UT spends a huge amount of money for their football players. Still doesn't guarantee success.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Word is Nessah wanted more $ and PT than we could commit to at this point given his injury history.

I feel like in the “old days” he would’ve been Garino-ish by his Junior year. Instead he’ll probably end up at a LM where he can start.

I’d settle for one Duke player - Patrick Ngongba Jr.

So strange seeing him and Kwame Evans Jr in the tourney and not in buff and blue. Blue Cain, too.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Too bad about Nessah, though I understand. He does need playing time to develop.

You can see he’s really talented, but I’ve never seen a player so good at getting to the basket with such bad touch once he gets there. I think with more playing time, he can calm down a bit when he gets to the hoop and became a really high quality player.  Wouldn’t be surprised if he transfers down for a year or two and ends up both major (though if he’s looking for more money now, I guess he won’t).

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Nessah was likely done in by a combination of early injury and by being 9th or 10th in a rotation of a coach that likes to play no more than 8 or 9.  And yes, TC…I hate this.   It makes no sense to recruit high school seniors to develop them to go play for another team when you can pick game ready players from the portal, including so many that we didn’t have a shot at out of high school.  Sadly, the days of watching the Rogers, Halls, Garinos and Watanabes for 4 years in a GW uniform are gone.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Sadly, the rumors regarding Jun have been out there for a while and even if you managed to avoid hearing about this, his decision to move on is more than logical.  He clearly wasn't the same player this season whether this was due to a bruised ankle or a bruised ego.  The team played exceptionally well in wins over Dayton and URI without him, and the team was then unable to figure out how to integrate his strengths during most conference games.  Jun undoubtedly handled things as well as he could but nevertheless realized that his NBA prospects took a legitimate hit.  (Regardless of anyone's opinion, when the NBA invites you to a symposium as it did with Darren, you must be considered an NBA prospect.)

Jun's landing spot will be interesting.  He has expressed a desire to play close to home but will he change his view on this?  If not, he can be a big fish in a small pond at AU or Howard, or a small fish in a big pond at Maryland.  I don't believe that any of these will be quite right although with Queen expected to leave Maryland, it's not inconceivable that he could become a starter at CP.  Mason is interesting in that they have a lot of retooling to do.  Nevertheless, they could represent the strongest fit.

A week ago, he tweeted "this next run super personal" which hopefully does not imply that the trip to Vegas for Jun will be nothing more that Jun auditioning for other schools.

Dayan marks the second consecutive year that a heralded Euro is transferring.  Both Benny Schroeder and Dayan Nessah dealt with injuries during their one season at GW.  The difference to me though is I saw more potential in Dayan's game.  As has been correctly stated in the past, it's the coaching staff and not you or I that gets to see these guys play every day in practice.  One would have to believe that if Dayan's play warranted more game minutes than he received, the coaching staff would have provided this.  The easy comparison is fellow freshman Ty Bevins who was also brought along slowly but who the coaches appeared to trust more as he earned more minutes, often in crucial situations, as the season progressed.

What Dayan really needs, in addition to good health, is a chance to play extended minutes without fear of being benched for a mistake, or without the realization that his game minutes will be so limited.  Probably not a coincidence that Nessah's signature game was against a D2 opponent when he scored 19 points on 8-9 shooting in just 16 minutes.  This was the team's final OOC game and while we hoped that this performance may have springboarded into a larger role, it sadly did not.  Landing at a low major would make a lot of sense.

This makes 2 of my 3 most logical guys to transfer (am excluding Keegan who I was unaware still had eligibility) and I'll let you know if the third ultimately occurs or not.  I'll also add that frankly, given the system we now have, I would not blame every NCAA player at every school to enter the portal.  Why not gauge your NIL worth without any ramifications over returning to your current school?  Yes, what we now have is the worst fre agency in all of sports.  Everyone is on an annual contract and everyone becomes a free agent at season's end (or in the case of the dysfunctional NCAA, technically before season's end).  Like elections, court rulings and settlements often have consequences, even if these are sometimes unintended.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Can't say I'm surprised by Buchanan although I'm definitely disappointed. In terms of Nessah, I'm afraid he may realize that the grass isn't always greener. He was seemingly in line for more minutes but evidently it wasn't enough. I wonder how we'll look back on this decision in a year. 5 open scholarship spots now

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Some other GW interests from yesterday:

The Portal Report @ThePortalReport 22h
FAU F Kaleb Glenn has received interest from the following programs, his agent @Ryanmurphhoop tells TPR:
Texas Tech
Kansas
Oklahoma State
New Mexico Butler
Dayton
George Washington
TCU
Miami

Monroe would be a good replacement for Jun, and fit with the presidential theme but I suspect he's going high-major.

Adam Zagoria @AdamZagoria 19h
Schools to reach out to Quinnipiac transfer @AmarriMonroe, the MAAC Player of the Year:
Ole Miss
Kansas
Memphis
Texas A&M
Creighton
Maryland
Xavier
Pitt
Rutgers
Butler
Utah
Ohio State
George Washington

Adams had originally committed to Kansas and then Gonzaga out of HS, but eventually ended up closer to home at CSUN due to family reasons.

Sam Kayser - 24/7 High School Hoops @247HSHoops 15h
Cal State Northridge forward Marcus Adams Jr. tells @LeagueRDY he’s heard from these schools since going portaling:
Missouri
USC
Arizona State
DePaul
Vanderbilt
New Mexico
Nevada
George Washington
Appalachian State
High Point

Updated Interest List:
Marcus Adams Jr. (Cal State Northridge) - 16.1 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1 spg; 40% 3-PT
Yame Butler (Drexel) - 13.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.8 apg; 37% 3-PT
Paul Djobet (Miami FL) - 5.5 ppg, 2.6 rpg; 38% 3-PT
Wes Enis (D2 Lincoln Memorial) - 20.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.2 spg; 41% 3-PT
Kaleb Glenn (Florida Atlantic) - 12.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg; 41% 3-PT
Toby Harris (D3 Brandeis) - 18.8 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.9 apg; 40% 3-PT
Rasheed Jones (Coastal Carolina) - 11.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.1 apg; 34% 3-PT
Quinton Mincey (UMass Lowell) - 16.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 2.8 apg; 39% 3-PT
Amarri Monroe (Quinnipiac) - 18.1 ppg, 9.1 rpg, 1.6 apg, 2.3 spg
Tanahj Pettway (Prairie View A&M) - 17 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.2 spg
Jamichael Stillwell (Milwaukee) - 13 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.3 spg
Elijah Strong (Boston College) - 9.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg; 36% 3-PT
All Wright (Valparaiso) - 15.5 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 2.4 apg; 38% 3-PT

It's unfortunate that Dayan's agent wants more money, but I think CC made the right decision to not give in. Expecting an international freshman to pan out right away is unlikely. Nessah has a lot of talent and I'm interested to see how he does moving forward, but he simply has too long of an injury history (almost ten years long) to make it worth it and I'm not sure Dayan would have been necessarily in line for more than like 15 minutes a game with Garrett back. It felt risky even last summer to take a chance on an injury-prone player to replace another in Johnson. Wish him all the best.

Right Free. Every time I hear the names Kwame Evans and Patrick Ngongba I go back to memory lane. Also when I see Walt Szczerbiak's son Wally on TV as an analysis. What could have been.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Good post Mayhem.   I liked the part of the coaches seeing in practice what we don't get to see.  Although I liked Nessah's skill set, the staff may have felt that it would not translate that well in the Atlantic 10 and maybe he was nudged out the door.

To a certain extent, you could say the same thing about Buchanan, but not so much that he was shown the exit but left by mutual agreement that GW was no longer the best fit for him.  Obviously  Jun brought much to the table in terms of tangibles and intangibles.   I thought much of  his second year decline was residual effects of the injury as well as the conference now having an effective book on how to play him.   Notwithstanding,  there are deficiencies in his game, the most glaring of which was his lack of an outside shot.   It was just awful this year (both prior to and after the injury)  The coach has frequently said how important  outside shooting (especially 3 point shooting) is in today's game.  Next season we have Garrett coming back, as well as what appears to be a highly rated forward  in Vinny Chaudhri.  And who knows who else we have our eye on at the 4 that we think we have a good chance of signing.  Assuming that Autry stays (at the 3) and Castro stays at the 5, whose minutes do the newcomers get, especially Garrett?   If youi want a team that can shoot, you cannot have both Castro and Buchanan on the court at the same time.  Why else would the coach start Hansen over him.  Further, this season, for some reason, Jun wasn't finishing at the hoop like he did his first year (again, the injury?).  He was also turnover prone and his defense was not that great.  His free throw shooting seemed to improve slightly but was still deficient.  I think that we should all be unhappy that Jun left, but I don't necessarily think it is the end of the world.

I also wanted to mention Mayhem's point about our lack of success with European recruits. One recruit that was not mentioned was Zam, who is harly a GW success story so far.  Does anyone know what his status was this sesaon.   I don't recall if he dressed for any game this season (maybe in the very beginning?).  Was he hurt all season?    Was he redshirted?    Is he in our plans?   He is 6'8" and can shoot.   Again, skill sets that we need.  Then again, Keegan is 6'11" and can shoot, and he couldn't make it onto the court.   Have we moved on from Zam as we did with Keegan?

Re: 2025 Portal Info

I am going to miss Jun the person.  I think he's exactly the kind of player want at GW and I wish him all the success in the world.

I am not as upset about losing Jun the player.  Jun was good at doing what he does, but he never really seems to fit with what the rest of the offense was trying to do, or what it really needed from someone playing his position.  It seemed the team really found success when they started to move away from him offensively and started to feature the guards and Castro.  We could use more players that fit into that offensive system, while also potentially being a defensive upgrade.

The important thing here is that in today's world, Jun leaving frees up a note of NIL money (I have to assume he was the biggest earner on the team).  With him gone, that money can go to keeping Castro and Jones/Autry (who were more the core of the offense), while also brining in another player who is a better fit or first more of a need (a real shooter or another big)

Zam played the first game and then hurt his wrist and had surgery.  He got a redshirt for this year.  I hope he comes back as I think he has a skillset that is valuable in the A10.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

When all the dust settles, the team that takes the floor next season will surprise us all.  Some coaches have stopped recruiting high school all together and are just going shopping at the portal.  Heck, how many players do you think get a wink in the handshake line of these games.  A whole new world out there where getting emotionally attached to any one player, or coach, is perilous.

I can think back to so many players who transferred away from GW and recall being very high on them at some point in their careers followed by the reality of knowing exactly what their flaws were. We all felt some love for Jorgenson, Savage, Edwards, Joe Bam, and now Jun just to name a few.  And each one showed special talent that needed development but ultimately came up short.

I went back and read the Virginia Tech intros and departures for JoeB and Jun.  They both were known to have raw talent but in need of development.  The goodbye tweet from Jun was verbatim to his current goodbye to GW.  I hope Jun doesn't equal JoeB's prodigious transfer stat.  Jun is gifted with an NBA body although he got thicker as the season went on.  His head down bum rush move to the basket can't be his only offense.  He doesn't even need to shoot from distance...just a baby hook (which he did a few times) from 5 feet out in the lane.  He lacked the discipline and mentality to improve his inside game and free throws.

All the transfers I mentioned lacked discipline.  Savage and Jorgenson, although talented, became uncoachable.  Jorgenson wanted to be a Harlem Globetrotter and see how many times he could go between his legs and behind his back before putting up a 30 footer and make a few.  Max and JoeB still get benched for out of control play.  No discipline was/is there downfall.  Could watch them all and at some point say "ok, alright, these guys can play." Quickly followed by "wait wut?"

Dayan was an experiment that other schools gave up on before the season.  He has length and some skills.  His endurance and injury history are concerns, yet he seems like a good kid.

Can't blame Jun for playing in the Crown.  All expense paid trip to Vegas...why not?  I hope the team has fun and plays solid basketball.  Go Revs!!  (Bring back a trophy and some solid transfers)
