Jun is said to have taken way less than he could get elsewhere (remember this is after
freshman season). Suspect that even post-injury, he could be desirable on the open market, which
is often based on hope that that the grass is greener.
We did ride with Drumgoole, so it is intriguing that he got more money (if Jun knew, that could have also
facilitated his departure. We rode way too long with Gerald as a starter, despite a huge slump, and in
terms of his minutes.
It took much of the season, but Gerald seems to have figured out his role, though who knows when
you're playing your last hopefully games before an audience.
It would be a good time, for Gerald to help repay GW's financial commitment. Anyone know how much? (over $200,000?)
If he gets hot as a streak shooter in both halves and continues his driving, given his long experience Gerald could make a difference. Hope he does for our sake and his sake.

Jacoi going portaling as wll. Will play in the Crown.
8 of our 9 highest rated recruits ever (according to 247) have transferred out of GW and went down a level.

On the plus side, we are close to getting a HM power forward. Sit tight and hopefully we will have some good news shortly.

Guessing Elijah Strong (hope, but a bit unlikely) or Paul Djobet from Miami (more likely given the CC/Miami connection?)

None were starters at the end of the season.

In response something said earlier (maybe Mayhem) I think there’s another option for why Jun struggled besides injury or ego.
I think it’s just that what he was asked to do changed. Prior to retooling the offense around Castro’s insane efficiency and finishing, the offense was mostly about getting Jun in isolation and letting him create with 4 guys on the perimeter when Castro was out (and with Castro being taken away from the basket when in together). He’s pretty good at that, though he had trouble finishing at the rim against size this year, especially against shot blockers. In fact, he was often met by 2 or 3 defenders at the rim because everyone knew our offense was mostly him getting to the rim at all costs.
But once we retooled the offense to clear more space for Castro - who is a MUCH more efficient finisher at the rim, and proved impossible for defenders to stop - I think Jun was asked to play differently. He was initiating more from the three point line facing up than from his back to the basket in the low or medium block. He was asked to move the ball more and make quicker decisions, not pound the rock.
I haven’t seen any evidence that the problem was his ego or being sent to the bench (feels like something fans always assume without real evidence, though theoretically possible) and Caputo and he denied injury was an issue. So, to me, the most likely explanation is that we were simply a better offense with a more efficient focal point and he struggled to adapt to his new role.
I hope wherever he goes, he finds that new role. I think Mason is losing a lot of guys, so maybe that’s an option - though I would HATE to have to play against him 2-3 times a year.
As for Jacoi, it’s disappointing but understandable in this modern world. He went through a horrible slump for a couple of months, but I could see him doing really well with a fresh start if he can get his shooting and finishing touch back. We will definitely miss his defense and steadiness off the bench, and it really sucks we won’t benefit from him becoming an experienced upperclassman.

Correct. And I can't help but think that this may have had some impact on each players decision to transfer (other than Keegan, of course). If they had stayed, I couldn't see either Jun, Jacoi or Dayan as starters next season. In fact, and I realize that this is assuming a lot, a starting 5 of Christian at the point, Autry at the wing, Garrett as the small forward, the power forward transfer at the 4 (again assuming this happens) and Castro at the 5 could be impressive, with Ty Bevins off the bench, along with the 2 frosh recruits, Trey Moss and whomever else we pick up in the portal may be a pretty good team.

As I mentioned before, if the players want to make everything transactional then I guess as fans we should make everything transactional. Zero reaction to Jun and Jacoi and any others transferring out. Simple bottom line for me being transactional. If we want to play in the real post season, we need better players than the ones leaving. The minute they decided to enter the portal is the minute I turn my attention to who is next. They did what is best for them so I am doing what is best for me and GW. Like I have heard said recently "it's all business now". Next.

Good point Rising. When I look at GW in a vacuum, I saw what appeared to be 10 solid players, however when I look at the teams playing in even the early rounds of the NCAA tournament or the teams at the top of the conference, it was apparent that those teams are better than us and in turn, we need to get better in order to rise to the next level. Jacoi and Jun were both solid players, however they both had significant holes in their games. Only given the opportunity to see glimpses of Dayan and I was big on him given his apparent skill set, but he was hardly a finished product. We should all be happy with the successes of this past season, but now its time to raise the bar, but for us to do so, we need to do better in this years portal than Drumgoole, Moss and Hansen. The issue is how do we lure these better players to GW. CC does a great job of promoting the program and talks convincingly about the advantages of playing for GW, however in the end, it all gets down to $$$. What a shame.

It is a shame because we all chose GW for non-monetary reasons. Heck, a lot of us chose to attend GW knowing it was going to cost us a lot of money.
Hopefully the University stays true to its word that it plans on directly supporting the team once it is allowed to do so under the House settlement. If that's the case, we should be in a strong position to not only retain the players we want to retain but attract better players in the portal.

Not only were they not good enough to get us to the NCAA tournament, they were not good enough to avoid getting us pulverized by Mason in the second half of an A-10 tournament quarterfinal. Note that Mason was an NIT team that lasted into the second round of the NIT so not exactly a NCAA team. I am not trying to blast these players and maybe with time they could have improved enough to be those players. But NIL has short-circuited that development process so we can only look at where they are today. And clearly, that was not good enough if you want to play in the NCAA tournament.
And therein lies the rub. 20+ years ago we heralded the arrival of players like Pops, Mike Hall, Carl Elliott etc. We hoped they could develop and we watched them develop through growing pains. We knew that most, if not all, would stay 4 years. We valued them as future GW alumni. We cared about them on and off the court because we knew they were invested in GW as we were invested in GW, if not moreso. Now, it feels as if GW, like most schools, is just an airport for mercenaries to pass through. Some have long holdovers others have a quick transfer to another flight. Really hard to feel the same affinity for the players that come and go season to season.
But this is the system that idiots like Bilas created and others even here thought was a good idea. It will all come crashing down shortly at least for the majority of players because it is unsustainable economically at most non P4 institutions. It will also hurt the other scholarship athletes as schools flock to D3 as a result. While we all read about the athletes who can command NIL dollars, the vast, vast majority of athletes cannot. And in many cases, they need that scholarship to go to college given the huge cost of a college education.
Sadly, we've lost our way with college athletics. So again I just shrug my shoulders over the portal and see what is next.

I agree that this is how we all SHOULD feel, but I can't help that I will miss Jacoi and especially Jun. Although I recognize that Jun had flaws in his game, I think he had tremendous potential and could have reached that potential at GW, with the right guidance. Oh well, on to next year.

Agree with DC Native. Both Jun and Jacoi also had the local angle as well, but in the NIL era I don't know that players care as much about staying home - money talks (not saying that necessarily applies to either DBJ or Jacoi, but in general). At this point, you just recruit the best players you can get regardless of where they are from. Hutch was one of my favorites (and I think every team could use a game manager type PG) but it was clear CC needed to make difficult decisions regarding the backcourt and this was a tough one given Coi's shooting slump and insufficient finishing at the rim. The backcourt needs significantly more dynamism, penetration, and shooting for GW to ascend.

I think GW Rising's analysis of the current and future of college hoops is correct. I really am sorry June and Jacoi are leaving us because they are both good guys that have great potential on and off the court. However, as fans we have to look to the future potential for bringing in another point guard, a couple of quality three point shooters and a big guy to back up Castro, Our coach says he has the $$ to get the players we need. Let's see what happens.

1,100 players entered the portal this week. This is lunacy. At what point will players start signing contracts that lock them in to a longer stay? The idea that all these guys are going to renegotiate their deals with different programs every offseason is incomprehensible to me, and yet...

One thing I think GW really needs to be concerned with in the NIL era is that we are not losing our transfers to other teams in the conference. That trend would be super concerning because it would mean either we are not able to pay A10 quality players enough or that our players think the coaching at other schools would be better.
Jun may very well be able to move up to a major conference (with the potential he has shown), while Jacoi seems like an A10 level player so unless the money or playing time is better at a step down, I wouldn’t be surprised if he moved within the conference.
