One thing I think GW really needs to be concerned with in the NIL era is that we are not losing our transfers to other teams in the conference. That trend would be super concerning because it would mean either we are not able to pay A10 quality players enough or that our players think the coaching at other schools would be better.

Jun may very well be able to move up to a major conference (with the potential he has shown), while Jacoi seems like an A10 level player so unless the money or playing time is better at a step down, I wouldn’t be surprised if he moved within the conference.

Or, in the case of Max Edwards and Noel Brown, it could just mean that we didn’t think the player fit our style of play or our culture - not that it means another school was willing to pay more or that the players thought another team has better coaching.  Could also just mean another A10 has a starting spot for them where don’t.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Missing Jacoi and Jun for all the reasons cited here. Both lost starting jobs, Jacoi certainly
more justified.
Since a lot of this is about money as well as old fashioned fit: Jacoi presumably looking for more playing time--no idea how much money or how much more he can get. Jun could have gotten a huge payoff after last year. Don't know about this year, so if he would start next year, would think it would be better
to stay at this level at a place he loves. But maybe he's seeing what's out there, which certainly may be
better than our offer.
Jacoi served a valuable function, especially at the end of the season, as a trusted head in or near
crunch time. Also, he played point guard to CJ's point guard. When they played together, Jacoi helped settle the team down. We actually needed another point guard because while CJ is looking toward a great GW future and is explosive, he is a freshman and still developing.
We have a long offseason to talk about it after the Crown, where we either lick our wounds or revel in our
surprising success. But as noted above, this makes it really hard to care about players and a team that
is constantly changing.
Hard to tell because of our quarter (half is too generous)-ass schedule. But this year had a feel to it
like we were developing a team that could really be a force in the league, albeit with some needed upgrades. And now it all depends on the very revolving door.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

JF, nice of you to recognize what Jacoi brought to the table.  While he has never been a great shooter and certainly appeared to be in a funk for much of the season, there should not be anyone questioning how valuable he was particularly in helping to close out games.  I do not see Trey A. or Ty as natural point guards.  Christian perhaps but he absolutely needs to improve his abilities to protect the ball.  Trey M. is quick enough but he too would need to greatly improve.  Jacoi was a steadying influence at the point.  His play will surely be missed.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Jacoi was a stabilizing influence and played good defense., no question. He also was one of the few players I was comfortable with shooting free throws at the end of a close game.    But you cannot overlook the other offensive numbers.  Averaging 23.5 minutes per game, he shot ,342 from the field, .258 from the 3 and averaged 2.41 assits per game.  Hello Delaware.   If we are going to take the next step, we need more than Jacoi gave us at the point, even as a backup.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

College basketball is now professional sports with all the players 1 year contracts.

Mid majors lke GW have to scrounge around the portal and pray for crumbs or for a good player wanting to reset for a year before moving on again.

I have no idea why anyone would donate money to support a team like GW anymore because almost none of the players give a damn about the school, the free education or the fans.  Exactly why should a GW fan be loyal to a team when there is no reciprocity?

Re: 2025 Portal Info

The departing players had offensive ratings of

- Buchanan 103 (using 22.4% of possessions when on floor)

- Hutch 91.6 (19.6% usage)

- Nessah 89.1 (very few minutes).

- Plus Drumgoole 99.7 (23.3%) and Hansen 98.1 (17%)

I’m guessing the players we are bringing in will have higher offensive ratings, which means I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re pre-season top 100 on KenPom because his algorithm will assume those possessions will go to more efficient players, whether it’s Castro or Autry, or someone new.

Plus if Kenpom uses the efficiency for  Garrett from the previous year - I believe he had positive numbers.

113 for Garrett last year according to Sport Reference.  Also 115 for Darren last year, but that's a different conversation.

Davidson seems to have been hurt the worst of the other teams in the league. Both Bailey and Durkin have entered the portal. They have the backing of Steph, but I don't know that constant roster turnover is going to work under McKillop. The Wildcats have always been a program built on internal development. Bona seems to also be completely redoing their roster behind the backing of Woj.

Some other notable names that have entered are Jalen Haynes of Mason, Jaylen Curry of UMass (probably doesn't want to play MAC ball), Chance Moore + Lajae Jones of Bona, Tre Dinkins of Duquesne, and Malachi Smith of Dayton. Fordham and La Salle have lost double digit scorers too, but they're changing coaches so that's understandable.

what is sad is that 25% of these players will not get another scholarship offer and have lost their best chance to get a free college education. less than 5% of players will get to the NBA, yet many unrealistically believe that they are just one team or one coach away from it.

About 1.2% of college players get drafted and less than 1% will ever play in the NBA, Bad advice from people surrounding many of these players - handlers, family members, friends. Too many find out the hard way. But hey, somebody's got to get that $1 million NIL deal and why not me with my 5 ppg average? SMH.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

So many different factors contribute to a player entering the portal, but the single most important factor imo is each coaching situation at each school.  I really felt for the GW players who had to endure the coaching fiasco handed to them a few years back.  I think CC has stabilized that aspect.
Jun is a unique player.  He displayed athleticism and raw ability which made it difficult to incorporate him into a system.  Why was he frequently bringing the ball up?  Why the inconsistency at the foul line?  My biggest problem with him was his showboating and trash talking.  When he bounced the ball off the backboard to dunk on a wide open chance at another teams gym in a game that was lopsided, struck me as poor sportsmanship and showed the distracted mindset he had.  Jus sayin.
CC said something key about Castro towards the end of the reg season.  He said, "he can really really play and is low maintenance."  I don't think Jun, or Nessah were low maintenance and need some time to mature.
I hope after the Crown that GW ends up with more mature and low maintenance hardworking guys.  If Castro stays and Captains next years team, I hope there will be another player on the team who can win an all out full court sprint against him.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

1)H&R 71 offers some good observations. One I just don't remember. Jun bounced the ball off the backboard for a dunk during the game? Which one?
Don't remember it. That would be classless unless he or us was being mocked. For showboating definition,,
see Bamisile, Joe in a GW uniform. Don't know if Odom let him do it.
Didn't someone do that bounce of backboard for another player against us this year at the Smith Center? May have been a lesser team trouncing us, like Duquesne (Max's revenge) or something.
Open to things I don't know. But in any case, pretty hard from personal observation and reputation to think of Jun as anything but a great guy.
The whole grass is greener thing has totally screwed college basketball. And fandom most of all but
the richest, most powerful teams. Revolving door every year.
Look forward to discussing this in depth, hopefully after we win the Crown tournament,, though
realistic expectations may be wildly different from that hope.

Re: 2025 Portal Info

Agree with jf. Not sure I'd call either Jun or Nessah immature (and definitely not high maintenance). Dayan's handlers appear to be out of touch with reality but Nessah was cheering on his teammates despite getting limited time. I thought DBJ handled his benching pretty well and professionally. Max on the other hand was a different story. It's good to have some low maintenance guys on the team, but appreciated Jun being fired up when needed. Every team needs that leader/spark to get going when things are tough. Not sure if Slim is that guy although very important to the team. With a low maintenance guy like JB as the leader on the previous team, I think GW really needed a guy who would speak up.

Also have no issue with the showboating against ODU. Don't like being dunked on like that? Don't allow the transition opportunity. I didn't have anything against GMU when KD Johnson (I think?) had that reverse dunk against GW in the tournament. Basketball should be played with some emotion and the dunks are fun to watch. Now jawing at another team's players/bench is another thing. I think Jun did that once in conference play at home after he made a fadeaway jumper (forgetting the team now) and was rightfully t'd up for it. Didn't care for that. Let your play do the talking.
