Local rival American University (AU) visits the GW Revs on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles, coming off a 1-29 2024-25 season, is in a rebuilding year. Despite a new coaching staff and a lot of new players, AU was was projected to finish 10th (last) in the Patriot League again this year. So far this season, the Eagles have only a single win to show for their efforts in a 1-7 start. Their sole win was against Delaware State, but they’ve had competitive losses against the likes of La Salle, William and Mary, and Delaware (GW’s last opponent). Although the Eagles have struggled offensively as a team, they have a consistent scorer in Molly Driscoll (13.8 ppg), and an outstanding rebounder in Charlotte Tuhy, who is pulling down 11.6 boards a game (10th in the NCAA DI), while adding 9.9 ppg.
As things continue to move in a positive direction for the Revs, the core rotation is emerging. GW’s early season woes propelled them to significant improvements against pressure defenses, resulting in improved half court offense and signifcantly better transition defense. GW has also improved greatly in closing out close games. With Sims at the center of the offense, the Revs have made better decisions on when to attack the defense, especially Reynolds and Lewis, who have become more efficient as a result. The veteran transfers (Wilson and Theodorsson) complement the primary scorers with timely plays, while Becker continues to hustle all over the court. When called on, Loving has provided solid minutes and strong defense against taller and physical front court players. The freshman (Dulin, James, and Phiri) are still trying to adjust to the offense and struggling to score, but are getting valuable playing time and contributing in other ways. Against AU, GW’s defense has to make the Eagles earn their baskets and keep Duhy off the boards. The Revs’ offense has to limit their turnovers, and continue to make good passing and shooting decisions. Any complacency or looking beyond this game to the McKeown homecoming event would be unfortunate.
After this contest-- a P4 matchup with Coach McKeown’s Northwestern Wildcats. It will be an exciting day, but first things first.

GW rolls to 70-44 win over American, to extend win streak to 5.
GW opened up with a big 1st quarter and cruised to a big win with a strong defensive effort. On the way to holding the Eagles to just 27% shooting from the field, the Revs collected 9 steals and 9 blocked shots. The Eagles’ top players were held in check, with Drsicoll scoring only 7 points on 3-13 shooting, and Duhy, among the nation’s leaders in rebounding, netting just 8 points and 5 rebounds. On the offensive side, GW was sharp, finishing with an efficient 51% shooting percentage buoyed by 17 assists. Reynolds (19 points) was 8-12 from the field in her 22 minutes on the court, while GW got scoring contributions from 9 other players, led by Lewis (11 points), Theodorsson (9 points), and Phirri (8 points). Wilson and Sims were also major factors, with each dishing out 5 assists and blocking 3 shots. The freshman (James, Phiri, Dulin), who are starting to blend in with the offense, finished a combined 6-12 shooting from the field, including 3 triples.
GW continues to take big strides, especially on the offensive side. They had no problem against AU’s full court pressure and a number of GW’s 11 turnovers came on hustle plays or trying to thread the needle on interior passes. A renewed focus on going inside and not relying on perimeter offense has paid big dividends, as demonstrated by the Revs 38-12 advantage in points-in-the paint. This was a good and uplifting win, but AU is clearly a team trying to find it’s way, and their defense is a work in progress. Northwestern will bring in a totally different set of challenges (size and talent-wise) and they are led by one heck of a coach. This game will be the best gauge yet of how far the team has come.
The Northwestern game is up in 7 days. And it will be really hard to root against a coach that has meant so much to GWU.

Really nice to see the women doing well. My wish list for the team: Theodorsson to not be so foul-prone,
Mia James to score more from the three and Becker to hit some more layups. Thanks xAC!

I have no reservations or qualms rooting for GW against Northwestern. Joe will be honored by the presence of so many returning Colonials who had the privilege of playing for him while he was GW’s coach. Look forward to catching up with them and Joe’s family before the game. Once the opening tip occurs, I’m supporting Gabby, Sara, Kamari, Tanah, Emma, Mia, Jada, Caia, Filipa, Colleen, Payton, Natalia, Silvia, sign toting Nya and Coach G. Those frustrated by the recent woes of the men’s team and concerned about player body language should come see a team that has found its next level and then some in the Cayman Islands. Ganiyat Adeduntan will be a name we will all learn to pronounce if not spell without consulting the roster page.
