GW @ La Salle Game (1)

GW’s conference schedule picks up with a road contest against the La Salle Explorers in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. Like St. Bonaventure, La Salle was projected to finish near the bottom of the A10, but have exceeded all expectations and come into this contest with a 9-4 overall record, and 2-0 in the A10. Included in their wins are victories against VCU in early November and Fordham earlier this week. Ashleigh Conner leads the way for La Salle at 15.4 ppg and 5.5 rpg, and Aryss Macktoon at 14.8 ppg and 6.9 rpg is close behind. GW and La Salle seem evenly matched-- against common opponents, both were defeated by Temple, but prevailed over American University and Delaware. The team statistics are also strikingly similar: La Salle scores 66 ppg to GW’s 65.3; La Salle yields 64.7 ppg to GW’s 60.6; La Salle shoots with 40.1% accuracy, while GW is at 41.7%; and the Explorers grab 37.8 rpg to GW’s 37.3. This shapes up to be a closely contested matchup.

GW is looking to get back on track after the last second loss to the Bonnies earlier this week. The St. Bonaventure defense forced GW to take some tough shots, but some of them were rushed or ill-advised, especially at critical points at the end of the game. On the bright side, this was a good game for teaching moments and there were some bright spots. Once again, the defense was really solid. Reynolds got back on track, and did so with only 10 field goal attempts. She probably needs to get more. Theodorsson continues to impact the game quickly when coming off the bench. Phiri had productive minutes and James played 27 minutes without a turnover. Also, the free throw shooting (13-16) continues to be solid. Becker is definitely a defensive asset, but opposing teams have left her alone on the perimeter, allowing them to crowd the paint and make it harder for Lewis and Sims to maneuver inside. If long term, Becker can become a scoring threat, she could develop into an All A10 type player. La Salle, much like St. Bonaventure, features a pair of high scoring/rebounding guards, so look for the GW defensive strategy to look much the same. The offense needs more ball movement and better shot selection. Hopefully, The Revs can put four good quarters of play together and come out on top. The schedule only gets tougher.

Rhode Island, who just knocked off Richmond, is on deck after this game. The tests just keep coming.

Re: GW @ La Salle Game (1)

After big 1st half, La Salle coasts to 66-52 victory over GW.

GW struggled to score in the opening half, missing numerous layup opportunities that gave the Explorers a chance to run and finish with easy baskets. Except for the end of the of the first two quarters, when GW gave up open 3-pointers at the buzzer, the half court defense was strong. La Salle led 38-28 going into the break. GW showed some signs of life early in the 3rd quarter, cutting the lead to 4 points, but unforced errors continued to plague the Revs and allow the Explorers to build a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. Conner and Macktoon led the way for La Salle with 17 and 18 points, respectively, although each needed 19 shot attempts to do so. The Revs failed to produce a double digit scorer. Phiri finished with 9 points, while Reynolds and Wilson added 8 points each. GW actually outshout La Salle in this game 35% to 34%, but the Revs’ 20 turnovers and Explorers’ 19 offensive rebounds resulted in 18 more shot attempts for the opposition, as well as a 25-12 advantage in points-off-turnovers. That was the ball game.

For GW, some major shortfalls persist. The Revs’ inability to finish drives to the basket, especially in transition, was as costly as turning the ball over, and allowed La Salle to score easily at the other end of the court. Many of the actual turnovers were the result of careless ball handling, or attempting passes to teammates with no separation from their defenders. The majority of misses by players (Theodorsson, Wilson, James, Phiri, etc.) came on errant or forced layups. And most of La Salle’s 10 fast break points came off of weak passes on the perimeter. One aspect of La Salle’s defense was especially good, that of limiting Reynolds to just 8 shot attempts overall and a single 3-point attempt. The inefficient shooting of the other players was not enough to fill the void, although the opportunities were certainly there. The PG play has been erratic-- maybe Dulin, who has been playing the most under control, should start or at least get more minutes. It’s a long season, but for GW, these issues have to be corrected soon. A lot of things for the coaches to ponder, and a lot work for the coaches ahead.

URI, arguably the best team in the conference at this point of the season, is up next. At least it’s a home game.
