GW @ Duquesne Game

GW is back on the road for a match up with the Duquesne Dukes on Wednesday evening. Duquesne was projected to finish 8th in the A10 this season, two slots above GW. Like GW, the Dukes had a respectable OOC (7-4), but are struggling in conference play, going 0-5 in the A10. Among their 7 wins were a double-digit victory over Pitt and an OT win over a good Navy squad. Since an early December loss to Davidson to start the A10 slate, Duquesne has followed with losses to St. Louis, Dayton, St. Bonaventure and VCU. The Dukes have a potent offensive backcourt in Alexis Bordas (15.8 ppg) and Nadia Moore (12.8 ppg). 6’5” Raevin Washington (4.9 ppg and 5.4 rpg) usually starts, but 6’3” Harriet Ford (8.4 ppg), who comes off the bench, leads the A10 in rebounding at 9.1 rpg. Duquesne leads the A10 in rebounding overall at 45.1 rpg and in offensive rebounding at 18.2 rpg. Duquesne is scoring an average 67.8 ppg, while yielding 63.4 ppg.

Despite their conference record to date, Duquesne presents a serious challenge to the Revs. They are playing at home. Their backcourt scoring ability and relentless rebounding will test the Revs’ stamina. Last year, the Dukes pressed from start to finish and handed GW it’s worst loss of the season, a 97-55 drubbing at Smith Center. Defensively, the Dukes’ length will be an issue, but Sims, who has guarded opponents’ tallest players all season long, has been a worthy defender despite the size disadvantage. Look for Loving to get extended minutes to help counter Duquesne’s Washington/Ford 1-2 punch inside the paint. It will be critical for the Revs to keep the Dukes off the offensive glass. On offense, the Revs have to take care of the ball, especially after beating the pressure. More passing and less dribbling/handing-off will lead to better shots. GW has to distribute the scoring. Lewis, Reynolds, and Theodorsson have to be productive on offense; no one player one GW player can do it alone. It will be a hard fought game, and for at least for one team, the consecutive loss streak in the A10 will end.

After the game, GW will return home for a weekend matchup with Chicago Loyola on Saturday.

Re: GW @ Duquesne Game

GW defeats Duquesne 59-45, ending 4-game skid.

For a half, it looked like neither wanted to win, as both offenses had difficulty making shots. GW was only slightly better, hitting on 32% of their shots to take an 18-14 lead into the break. Duquesne could only manage 21% accuracy, and Bordas, who was guarded tightly by the Revs, and could only muster 2 points. GW broke out early in the 2nd half when Sims knocked down consecutive treys, and Reynolds got loose for a 3-pointer to make it three in a row. After that, GW managed to maintain a comfortable lead until the end of the game. Lewis led the Revs, netting 17 points on 7-9 shooting and grabbing 7 rebounds. Sims chipped in 13 points, including 3-6 from beyond the arc. Reynolds had 7 points and led the Revs with 8 rebounds. Bordas came alive in the 2nd half for Duquesne and took game scoring honors with 20 points, but no other Duke player reached double figures.

Although the game started out slowly for GW, there were some bright spots. The defense was once again excellent, holding Duquesne to just 29% shooting for the game and forcing 19 turnovers. And despite a bad shooting 1st half, GW managed to put together a 41-point second half and finish at 46% from the field. The Revs also topped the A10’s best rebounding team 35-27, holding Ford and Washington to just 2 boards apiece. Turnovers (18 for GW) were high, but few were converted to scores, and for the most part, the backcourt handled the press well enough to come away with an 8-3 advantage in fast break points. Lewis was productive and efficient throughout then game, while Sims hit critical shots to start the 2nd half. Also in the second half, Wilson and Theodorsson made multiple clutch shots and finished with 6 and 11 points respectively. Yes, there are still some areas that need improvement, but it’s great to get a win, especially with a total team effort.

Next up: Chicago Loyola visits the Smith Center on Saturday for an afternoon match up.
