GW will make the short trip down I-95 to meet the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Rams in Richmond on Wednesday evening. For the second time in two meetings, the Revs will face a team with an identical conference record. Both teams stand at 2-5 in A10 play, but VCU is at just 6-13 overall following a 4-8 record in OOC competition. The Rams played a strong OOC slate, with loses coming from the likes of Power 4 foes Texas A&M, Colorado, Georgia and Penn State. In their contests against common GW opponents, VCU was able to defeat Howard and American University, while losing to Temple. In the A10, where the Rams were projected to finish in 6th place, VCU has defeated St. Louis and Duquesne. The Rams have struggled offensively, especially since Mary-Anna Asare, a preseason All-A10 1st team selection, has played in only seven games. In those games, she has averaged 17.4 ppg. Without Asare, the Rams were soundly beaten by Richmond in their most recent A10 contest this past Saturday. If Asare can’t play, Katrina Knezevic (10.1 ppg and 4.7 rpg) will come into this contest as the leading scorer and rebounder for the Rams. As a team, VCU is scoring 57.5 ppg. The Rams' defense yields 66.5 ppg, but is forcing opponents into 17.6 turnovers per game.
This is a contest between two teams looking for offensive consistency. Defensively for GW, Asare’s availability will effect strategy. VCU has an overall height advantage, especially when 6’7 Hawa Doumbouya comes off the bench. If Asare doesn’t suit up, Knezevic will lead the way, but others (Makennah White, Cyriah Griffith, or Patricia Augustin) could be x-factors. With the Rams’ current scoring difficulties, the Revs’ will have to limit the turnovers on the offensive side of the ball in order to prevent a lot of easy transition baskets. Offensively, GW continues to get inconsistent scoring support, whether Lewis or Reynolds is leading the way. Lewis has stepped up her game of late. She has scored in double figures the last four games, averaging 14.5 ppg and shooting a hefty 60% from the field. Reynolds has been the focus of the oppositions’ defense, which is limiting the number of good looks she’s getting at the basket. Sims, Theodorsson, and Phiri have to fill the void. They are all capable of scoring, but need to be more selective in their shots in critical game situations. Ultimately, this game will likely come down to who is better at putting the ball in the basket.
The Revs return home to start a two-game stand on Sunday, hosting the Fordham Rams.

GW comeback falls short, ends in 63-60 loss to VCU.
This was a tale of two halves. The 1st half could not have gone worse for GW. The Revs were disorganized on offense and settled for too many quick shots that didn’t fall. The result was a GW 5-25 shooting performance (including 0-10 from beyond the arc) that fueled VCU’s transition offense and helped them to take a commanding 38-15 lead into the locker room at halftime. Griffin, with 13 points, led the Rams to an efficient 49% shooting accuracy for the half. Credit GW for not giving up. The Revs came out determined to go inside on the Rams, and owned the paint in the 3rd quarter. GW’s veteran trio of Lewis, Reynolds, and Sims took turns leading the offense as the Revs continued to whittle down the lead. Sims third triple cut the lead to a single point with just seconds remaining and that was as close as GW would get. GW scored 45 2nd half points, while, shooting 16-23 (69.5%) from the field. The GW defense also turned up the pressure and forced VCU into 12 second half turnovers that helped them cut into the lead. Griffin finished the game with 18 points for VCU. Lewis (20 points and 8 rebounds) led the way for GW, while Sims tallied 17 points and Reynolds added 16 points.
Once again, GW got into an early hole they could not dig themselves out of. The coaching staff earned their salaries in the 2nd half, as the Revs came out and played arguably their best half of the season. There was great scoring distribution from the starters, but the GW bench was outscored 20-2 by the VCU subs. The Revs were also outrebounded by VCU 37-22. Lewis continued her effective play, scoring her 20 points with just 7 shot attempts. Sims was dominant on the inside to start the 3rd quarter, and then moved outside to hit some key 3-pointers. And Reynolds had her best game since the St. Bonaventure loss. Today, Lewis, Reynolds, and Sims scored 53 of the team’s 60 points. Coach G made limited use of her bench today, but moving forward, GW will need more consistent offensive contributions from the substitutes. Dulin, although not scoring, played solidly at the point and was tenacious on defense. The challenge ahead for the team will be to get off to better starts, and then play 4 good quarters of basketball in a game.
Just when you thought you might want to turn you’re Roku off, the team came out and played the way you’d like them to play. Hopefully the Revs learned something from this experience that they can use against Fordham this weekend (weather permitting).
