GW @ Davidson College Game

GW travels to North Carolina to meet the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats finished 8-5 in their OOC slate, with four of the losses coming against P4 opponents-- Miami, Mississippi State, Baylor and N.C. State. In addition to Miami, the Wildcats’ record against other common GW OOC opponents includes a loss against Charlotte and a win versus Morgan State. Davidson was projected to finish 3rd in the A10, but after suffering an upset loss to St. Bonaventure on the road on Wednesday, the Wildcats come into this weekend’s action at 7-5 in the A10, good for sole possession of 5th place. The Wildcats are led by Charlise Dunn (15.3 ppg and 8.1 rpg), a versatile 6’2” guard who ranks 3rd in rebounding in the A10. Katie Donovan (11.6 ppg) is an exceptional perimeter shooter who leads the A10 at 46.7% on 3-pointers. Along with Kyra Bruyndoncx (9.7 ppg), the three guards have combined to take over 400 3-point attempts, hitting on 144 of them. As a team, Davidson scores 66.4 ppg, while allowing 58.5 ppg.

Davidson will be tough to beat on their home floor, where they are currently 10-2 on the season. In Olean, St. Bonaventure won by holding the Wildcats to just 19% (7-36) on their 3-point attempts. GW’s defense will have to maintain a similar focus on the Wildcats’ perimeter game or it could be a long afternoon. Davidson’s backcourt trio has scored more triples than the entire Revs’ team, making defensive assignments difficult, but it has been Dunn who has given GW the most trouble in the past (25 points in last year’s win over GW). Offensively, the Revs have been more cohesive of late, but they can’t be content with trying to trade 3’s with the Wildcats. The inside game has been working and the Revs have to win the points-in-the-paint battle and get to the free throw line. This means Lewis and Sims have to be more efficient with their close-in shots, and Reynolds has to take advantage of openings in the lane. The bench also has to step up again, but more so defensively. Additional scoring from Theodorsson and Wilson would also be a big help. This will be a great test for the team, and the coaching staff as well.

Looking forward, things don’t get easier for the Revs, with another road visit to St. Joe’s coming up, and matchups against the top 3 A10 teams in the following five games.

Re: GW @ Davidson College Game

GW stalls in 2nd half, loses 68-58 contest at Davidson.

Despite the final score, GW played a competitive game against the Wildcats until midway through the 4th quarter. The Revs did a good job of limiting the Wildcats’ 3-point attempts in the 1st half (2-7), but was unable to contain Dunn in the paint, as she finished with 12 points to lead her team to a 37-33 lead going into the break. GW was able to keep it close, thanks to a 13-2 advantage on second chance points. Reynolds had 13 points and Lewis 10 to pace the Revs. The GW offense stayed close to start the 3rd period behind Lewis’ early surge, but she had little support on the scoring end, and Davidson was able to extend their lead to 54-46 going into the final period. GW could not get closer, as Dunn, who finished with a game-high 31 points, was almost unstoppable when Davidson had to have a score. Lewis finished with a career-high 25 points for GW, and Reynolds followed with 22 points. It was a well-played game on both ends, but Davidson’s late-game offensive execution and Dunn’s timely scores made the difference in the outcome.

GW was able to negate Davidson’s perimeter attack, holding them to just 4 successful 3-point attempts in 12 tries. Unfortunately, the Revs’ had no answer for Dunn, who scored consistently from the inside. The same could be said for Lewis, as the Wildcats had similar difficulties containing her inside the paint. Reynolds was also effective in spots, but outside of the high scoring duo, the rest of the Revs could only manage 11 points. In the end, the difference was the Wildcats’ ability to hit a slightly higher percentage of their field goal attempts (49% to 42%), and an off-day for GW’s bench, who only managed to put 6 points on the board. Phiri, who has not played in the last few games (injury?) could have been a big help. A most difficult stretch in the schedule awaits GW. Aside from a few minor lapses, the Revs are getting better, especially on the offensive end. Just in time.

Next, GW meets St. Joe’s in a Wednesday early afternoon match up. St. Joe’s has been playing well and Philly has not been kind to GW this season. Another great test coming up.
