GW adds another backcourt piece in Phillips, one that will hopefully provide some floor spacing when needed. In three years at Lafayette, he knocked down 35% of his triples and was a fairly good rebounder the last couple seasons. The Leopards have been a middling Patriot League team during that time, but Phillips has certainly been a featured weapon, particularly in 2025-26. The hope is that GW is getting more of the sophomore year Phillips (43% from 3) than the junior one (31% form 3) in terms of his efficiency. He is certainly not getting over 12 shots per game like he did this year, and with better talent around him hopefully his efficiency improves.

While Phillips does bolster the shooting, this is not an addition that will solve potential playmaking issues. He has averaged under 1 assist per game in his career, and had the lowest assist rate of any Lafayette players that used at least 16% of possessions this year (per KenPom). Additionally, the metrics are not kind as it relates to his defense. Phillips had a -1.48 DBPR on EvanMiya, which was second worst among Lafayette's "top players" despite him leading the team in steals this year. Again, it's possible that a lower offensive role will help him contribute more on this end as well.

Phillips is a great story, as Lafayette was his only D1 scholarship offer out of HS (Delaware had offered him a preferred walk-on spot). He sadly lost multiple family members during COVID, so his ability to overcome that and play at a high level is admirable (see video below). Hope that continues to translate as he moves up a couple levels to the A10. As you can see in the "notable performances" section above, he had a fairly good game when the Leopards faced GW two seasons ago.

Welcome to GW Andrew! Looking forward to seeing you play this Fall.
