Re: Karl Hobbs back in the A10

Nor am I.  My comments do not pertain to lower level D1 head coaching jobs.  What I had in mind were high and even high mid-major (top 10 conferences or so).  These were the programs who may very well have been blackballing him.

Re: Karl Hobbs back in the A10

I've talked with several current and former ADs about why Karl hasn't gotten another chance. Fairly or unfairly (I believe the latter in the case of #1 and #2)) he is saddled with 4 concerns - 1. Reputation as being difficult to work with internally. 2. The Philly prep school scandal 3. Salary demands 4. His lack of willingness to coach at lower levels.

He's been close on a number of jobs but one thing or another has eventually derailed his chances. I know he can coach and recruit but combinations of the four factors above undoubtedly have hurt his chances since GW. At this point, I think he is just happy to coach where he can. He will do a good job at Duquesne and bring in talent there.

Re: Karl Hobbs back in the A10

I expected Karl after GW, to go at minimum somewhere like Hofstra or Siena in the early 2010s, not 3-4 levels down but maybe a step or step and a half.   Maybe Fordham.

Certainly if you compare Karl's resume to say, Carm's resume, Karl would be an easy choice.

Re: Karl Hobbs back in the A10

Oh man, I still remember the Post's stories. I wrote (politely) to the I think sports editor Emilio Garcia-Ruiz and also Mark Schlabach (who didn't respond), pointing out things like Omar had made the dean's list and other things, and Garcia-Ruiz wrote a really snippy and in my opinion unprofessional email back saying I was a blind homer booster and fan in denial or something like that and called it the worst case of academic fraud he'd every seen. The writer, Emilio Garcia-Ruiz won a Pulitzer years before looking at Univ of Minnesota recruiting violations, maybe he thought he was going to do the same thing. However, a much smaller (athletically) school like GW doesn't have that same level of boosters who want to break the rules, but it seemed like he assumed anyone responding did. It really made me mad, I emailed the Ombudsman about it. And now Garcia Ruiz is the editor in chief of the SF Chronicle.

Re: Karl Hobbs back in the A10

I found the emails, Garcia-Ruiz also asked me "what kind of warped moral values do you have?" and so on. When my main point was that Omar made the dean's list which wasn't mentioned in the articles. He replied with something like that does't mean anything, colleges pass athletes all the time - as if GW just decides to put kids on the Dean's list. Which to me is him assuming this is some large scale official academic fraud by GW, like the UNC fake classes several years ago, as opposed to a shady prep school which was OK'd by the NCAA.

The ombudsman did respond and said they'd talk to him, so that's something. I'm still angry about it clearly!
