Opponent Summary: GW travels to Morgantown, West Virginia on Wednesday to take on the Mountaineers. On the heels of a less than meaningful encounter with UDC, the Revs face perhaps their toughest opponent of the regular season in WVU. Although losing a significant portion of their starting rotation to graduation last season, leading scorer Gia Cooke (15.0 ppg) returns to lead a squad that starts the season ranked 24th in the nation in the AP Preseason Top 25 Poll. And despite the graduation losses, Cooke, a preseason All-Big 12 selection, has a lot of help, thanks primarily to the A10. Joining the Mountaineers this season are three All A10 selections from last season – Zahirah Walton and Kennedy Harris (GMU), and Alexas Bordas (Duquesne). The Mountaineers also landed All Big East Forward Skylar Forbes from Marquette among several other additional transfers.

About the game: In WVU’s opening game on Tuesday, the Mountaineers held on to win a closely contested game (68-64) against GW A10 rival URI. Cooke led the way for WVU with 28 points, and Walton pitched in 12 points. WVU led for most of the game, and led by as many as 15 points, but URI was able to narrow the lead in the 4th quarter. A key factor for WVU was scoring 18 points on 20 URI turnovers and gaining a 25-13 advantage in free throw attempts. The Revs’ backcourt will have to take care of the ball and the defense will have to have neutralize the physical inside play of Walton and Forbes in order to compete. This game will be a good early test for GW, and an opportunity for fans to see the team in action against a long, athletic, and physical Power 5 opponent.
