Re: Transfer Season 2020

Michigan PG David DeJulius enters the transfer portal. That’s a surprise.

I would love to land him, but he’ll likely be able to pick any program he wants.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

I don't think DeJulius was a favorite of the new coaching staff.  The plan was to give him the keys once Xavier Simpson departed but with the recruits they have coming in, I don't believe this was a given by any stretch of the imagination.  Coaches wanted to see him play a bit more selflessly.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Jeff Goodman just tweeted an update on transfers that showed the A-10 is the conference with the most reported transfers out.  I don't think it's a surprise to anyone following the league or this thread but it does go to show how precarious of a position the A-10 is in.  You end up getting both transfers up and transfers down.  It certainly makes the job of a coach that much harder.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Jeff Goodman's tweet also mentioned that Wichita State had 7 players transfer out!! They did bring in UConn grad transfer Alterique Gilbert, though. I'm guessing something controversial will come out about Wichita State's coach(Marshall) at some point in the future because one or more of his former players will start talking.

About Goodman's tweet on 31 players transferring out of the A10, I'm assuming most of those are guys transferring down. It's not necessarily a situation in which BCS schools are raiding the A10, like they've done to several mid-major conferences/teams. Even with all the transfers out, the A10 is still bringing in former top 100 players like James Bishop, Matthew Moyer, the Mitchell Twins(Rhode Island), Dahmir Bishop(St.Joe's) and Noah Fernandes(UMass). The big problem for the A10 will be if guys like Fats Russell, Santos-Silva and Jalen Crutcher remain in the NBA draft.

Yesterday, Rhode Island transfer Tyrese Martin announced he will attend UConn, he'll be playing for Dan Hurley, who originally recruited him to Rhode Island. It's good that Rhode Island didn't block T.Martin from transferring to UConn. I know some schools block players from following a coach who left for a bigger payday. UConn is moving to the Big East next season, and Hurley needs all the talent he can get to avoid going 3-15 or 4-14 with DePaul every year. UConn has been a middle-of-the-pack team in the AAC in Hurley's 2 years there, and middle-of-the-pack in the AAC equals 3-15 in the Big East!!

Re: Transfer Season 2020

That's a good find.
We just got a point guard, but wonder if Jair has become a more passing point under Lurch at South
Carolina? Martin is hardly a model individual, but would know a little bit about coaching and doesn't seem like
the type to give his players totally free rein.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

And, if memory serves, Jair did seem less out of control when he played against us. Didn't get a lot
of assists this year, though.

One of the guys on Goodman's list at the time he tweeted this wasn't even from the A10 (Siena), although I guess that was canceled out later when Kier entered the portal.

Of those 31 guys, only 4 so far have moved up to a higher level. Interestingly enough, half are from GW with DJ transferring to DePaul midseason, and AT headed to St. John's. The other two names moving up are Croswell of La Salle (Providence) and Tyrese Martin of URI (UConn). Martin as mentioned was previously recruited by Hurley so I guess that's a slightly different case. That number might go up to 5 if Kier ends up going to a school like Virginia Tech.

Overall, I don't think it's overly helpful to look at a conference by conference basis unless there is a further breakdown of those who transfer to a higher level vs. lower level. Based on the above, it appears that most of the guys are transferring down a level, and a good number of those guys were not really contributors in the A10. There are likely as many power conference guys who transferred down that I'd say it's more or less even, or that the A10 even got better in terms of talent.

I think it's a better assessment to look at a school by school basis. The AAC has 23 guys or so transferring out from that list, but over a third come from Wichita State. Yeah the A10 has 31 guys transferring out, but nearly half of the transfers came from three schools: GW, UMass, and URI. In our case, many of the departures were guys recruited from previous coaching staffs. The biggest takeaway to me is that the culture at UMass and Rhode Island isn't very strong right now. It feels like UMass is recruiting over their guys every year. URI may be even more concerning given how many guys have left despite the playing time being there for them this coming season and URI's overall successful season. You take these three teams out, and the A10 averages under 2 transfers per team which sounds pretty normal. Hopefully this doesn't continue to happen at UMass or URI for the sake of the conference, because I think long-term if this keeps happening, the two programs will be hurt. Of course, this is subject to change if that one-time transfer rule gets approved.

This, although I would be very surprised if Russell, Crutcher, and especially Santos-Silva don't return to school next year. It would be killer if they decided to put their names in the portal after testing the waters. That's not a very common occurrence either, but has happened in the past.

Also, good luck to Jair. I didn't realize he shot over 41% from deep which is pretty good, but I think Martin found over the course of the season that if the shots weren't going down, there wasn't much of reason to play him heavy minutes so he started coming off the bench. Jair is probably looking to stay at a relatively high level while still getting the chance to start. Maybe a school in the AAC would be a good fit. I think Tulane and East Carolina are full as of now though.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

As Lefty Driesell so eloquently put it, "you know I don't know."  That's how I sum up this topic.  URI hires David Cox who had been Dan Hurley's top assistant, presumably to maintain continuity within the program as much as any other reason.  And so, half the team defects.  Makes no sense.

Matt McCall is the most enigmatic coach in the conference.  He came to UMASS as a hot young coach coming from Chattanooga.  His recruiting grades easily rank in the top 5 schools of the A10.  And yet, he has no results to show for it, going 38-58 in three seasons at the helm.  This Woodstock Academy thing better work because I would think he will be very much on the hot seat with another sub-500 performance.

Justin Kier transferring out can not help Dave Paulsen's job security.  He has two years remaining which means the school could easily part ways after 2020-21.  Interestingly, a bonus clause was added to his contract based on attendance.  Paulsen stood to gain the bonus based on an average minimum of 4,600.  The program has failed to reach this over the two seasons the clause has been in effect.

Finally, and not that it matters, but does DJ Williams really count as one of the 31 conference transfers?  He belongs on last year's list, not this year's list.  He and Terry left at the same time and Terry appears on last year's list.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Jair Bolden was less out of control at South Carolina, but as Dmvpiranha pointed out, if he wasn't hitting shots, he wasn't providing much else. Also, freshman combo guard Jermaine Cousinard(a stronger, quicker, more athletic player) eventually took J.Bolden's starting spot and a lot of his minutes in late December/early January. One of the commenters on twitter mentioned that North Carolina transfer/former 5-star recruit Seventh Woods will eligible next year for South Carolina. I'm guessing that J.Bolden saw the writing on the wall and didn't want to spend his final year of college basketball sitting on the bench!!

George Mason's outstanding big man AJ Wilson was a redshirt junior last year and could be a grad transfer like Justin Kier. I'm shocked that AJ Wilson is still at Mason when you consider that they haven't been very good in his time there and how well he played this past season. I figured AJ Wilson would be highly sought after by a large number of BCS schools(similar to Kevin Marfo) and would announce his decision to transfer a few hours after George Mason's season ended!! If AJ Wilson does decide to transfer, dragging it out like this probably makes it a lot more painful for their fans and Dave Paulsen. If AJ Wilson stays, George Mason COULD make some noise next year, if he leaves, they may battle Fordham for last place!!

About UMass, Rhode Island and GW being the main contributors to the A10's high number of transfers, Rhode Island appears to be the only troubling situation, in my opinion, because they've had a bunch of guys transfer out(in addition to Langivine and Dowtin graduating), and do not appear to have a well thought out rebuilding plan, other than offering as many players as possible. Rhode Island has been one of the better programs in the A10 for several years now, and could be in store for a major drop off in the near future.

At least for GW and UMass,  you're seeing what appears to be an upgrade in talent to turn around losing programs. UMass has run off some good players, but the Woodstock Academy pipeline has brought in 8 players, most of them probably would have signed or stayed with BCS schools if it weren't for the former Woodstock coach. So you could make a case that the "Woodstock 8" will be very good in a year or 2 because they'll have a bunch of BCS level players competing in the A10. GW has a 2nd year coach who has quickly flipped the roster in order to get "his guys" in, you can't really blame a new coach for wanting to put his imprint on his team, especially if he took over a bad situation like Jamion Christian did.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Some significant A10 transfer news just occurred as Rhode Island freshman Jacob Toppin(Obi's younger brother) announced that he is transferring. At this point, you have to believe that there is some sort of issue that the players had with Rhode Island coach David Cox because he's losing several guys that he recruited. Fats Russell is in a tough spot because he's probably not a highly regarded NBA prospect, so another year of college would benefit him, but why would he want to return to Rhode Island at this point??  It would be interesting if Jacob transferred to a school that is in the same city where Obi gets drafted.

Another player with local ties has entered his name into the transfer protocol, Texas A&M freshman Yavuz Gultekin, he played his high school ball at Bishop Walsh in Maryland. He's a 6-7 wing player who originally signed with Buzz Williams at Virginia Tech, then followed Buzz to Texas A&M. I believe GW is already 1 over the scholarship limit, but Gultekin seems like the type of player who would fit into Jamion Christian's system. He only played 8 minutes a game as a freshman this past season.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Jon Rothstein@JonRothstein
Interesting Stat: Since the reconfiguration of the ACC prior to the start of the 13-14 season, 50 players have transferred into the league from lower level conferences. 13 have averaged in double-figures. Six averaged double-figures on teams with a winning ACC record.

I'm not the type of person that more restrictions need to be in place on transferring but I think this stat shows that the grass is not always greener transferring up once you show success at the A-10 level or lower.  It's one thing for a grad transfer who just wants a chance at going to March Madness, but there is a lot of risk for kids who transfer up because they think it'll help their draft prospects.  You may just end up being the 7th or 8th option on a BCS team.

The A-10 is quickly getting squeezed out by the top leagues.  It is getting very tough these days for A-10 teams to get at large bids.   The A-10 had its best OOC record in many years but only Dayton was guaranteed to make the NCAA Tournament this past season.  The recent moves by the P5 and Big East to go to 20 game schedules and play inter-league challenges is further reducing signature OOC game opportunities for A-10 members which will make getting an at league all that much tougher.  The removal of the transfer wait period is also going to have a big negative effect on the A-10.  The league is headed toward a future of being the farm system for the top conferences.

Unfortunately, nearly to each and every player, the transfers of today all think they will be the exception.  They choose not to listen to anyone who says otherwise.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Rhode Island freshman Jacob Toppin has transferred to Kentucky!! He isn't as tall as his big brother Obi and is more of a perimeter, but he does have a similar level of athleticism as Obi. It will be interesting to see how well J.Toppin does at Kentucky when you consider that Calipari always brings in at least two 5-star/McDonald's All-Americans every year.

I'd like to see Goodman or Rothstein show the stats/provide info of how BCS players do when they transfer down.
