Re: Transfer Season 2020

If a player graduates and plays elsewhere as a grad student, are they considered a transfer? Would they even show up in the portal?

Re: Transfer Season 2020

One to keep an eye on: Vado Morse from Mt. Saint Mary's, originally a JC commit. He's a 6' guard (interesting since we've heard that JC likes bigger guards). Had a monster freshman year with 14.7 ppg, including 36% from three. Was down slightly his sophomore with 10.8 ppg and 31% from three. He's from Suitland and went to Bullis, would have 2 years of eligibility left.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Good find.
As noted, dipped his sophomore year. , especially in the all important 3s.
He has proved himself in D1 basketball, so may be a different story.
But overall, we need to aim a bit higher than Mt. St. Marys level of recruits in general.

Not a good fit. He's not 6-foot, I don't care what they list him at - 5-9 at best. Know him from the Bullis community. He'd be a walk-on here if we are interested in upgrading talent. Nice kid but not what we probably need or want in a scholarship guard. We must get better.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Jonah Antonio, 6-5 G, UNLV grad transfer.  Originally from Australia.  Redshirted his freshmen year and then played one year at MSM under JC.  Started 31 games and averaged 11.3 ppg.  Shot a ton of 3s (266) at a 34% clip.  Transfered and played one year at a JUCO before ending up at UNLV this year.  Played in only 25 games (13 starts) due to a hand injury.  6.9 ppg.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Other notable names in the portal today:

Cameron Parker (Sacred Heart; Beaverton, OR) Sophomore. PG. Averaged 9.9 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 7.8 apg. 44% FG, 29% 3-pt, 75% FT. Suffered a lower body injury after 18 games and missed the rest of the season. Would serve as a nice replacement for Armel after sitting a year. Parker had a game earlier this year where he recorded 24 assists in a single game against a D3 school - an NCAA record. However, he probably wants to play closer to home and has already received an offer from UC Santa Barbara since entering his name in the portal. Parker will definitely get a lot of interest.

Christian Agnew (North Alabama; Detroit, MI) Sophomore. SG. Averaged 12.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.6 spg. 43% FG, 35% 3-pt, 68% FT. Led relatively new member Lions in scoring and a decent rebounder. More of a SG than a PG but seemingly a pretty good on-ball defender.

Trevon 'TJ' Tucker (Wyoming; Chesapeake, VA) Sophomore. SF. Averaged 7 ppg and 3.4 rpg. 49% FG, 38% 3-pt, 77% FT. Played on a bad Wyoming team whose coach just got fired, but his stats are decent and the jump from the MWC to A10 wouldn't be too big. Included partly because he's from Virginia.

Mattias Markusson (Loyola Marymount; Stockholm, SWE) Grad transfer. Center. DNP this year because of an ankle injury. Averaged 10.2 ppg, 6.3 rpg in 2018-19. 59% FG, 20% 3-pt, 76% FT. Played on one of Loyola's better teams in the recent past, although another mediocre year this season without him led to the coach being canned. Good stats for a big and can play immediately. The international angle of course is an important factor here as well.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Matthew Moyer, 6-8 PF, Vanderbilt grad transfer.  Started his career at Syracuse.  90 career games (26 starts).  Career avg of 3.1 ppg, 3.0 rpg.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

We have our first report of a transfer on our radar!  Much like the rest of our recent recruits he has ties to JC as he started his career at MSM before transferring to UNLV.   Originally from Australia.

Evan Daniels  @EvanDaniels 12m
UNLV transfer Jonah Antonio has heard from Seton Hall, George Washington, Xavier, SMU, BYU, USF and Missouri State, he tells @247Sports. Averaged 6.9 PPG and has hit 143 threes in two college season.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Other notable names from the past couple of days:

Justin Thomas (Morehead State; Indianapolis, IN) Grad transfer. PG. 8.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 4.4 apg, 1.9 spg. Shooting stats aren't as great but may be a good glue guy based on his stats across the board.

Sam Sessoms (Binghamton; Philadelphia, PA) Sophomore. PG. 19.4 ppg, 5 rpg, 4.8 apg, 1.6 spg. 42% FG, 32% 3-pt, 81% FT. Three point shooting could be better for JC's system but those are great numbers even if it's a terrible Binghamton program.

Hayden Koval (Central Arkansas; Prosper, TX) Junior. Center. 12.2 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1.5 apg, 3.1 bpg; 46% FG, 33% 3-pt, 73% FT. A 7' big will be in high demand though.

Mark Gasperini (American; Moscow, RUS) Grad transfer. PF/C. 8.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg; 49% FG, 71% FT. More of an offensive weapon than defensive but could be a decent AT replacement. International angle is a plus as well.

Jacob Boonyasith (American; Jenison, MI) Sophomore. SG. 7.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.1 apg; 46% FG, 37% 3-pt, 60% FT. Numbers are just okay but possibly could be an upgrade to the bench and seems to be a decent three point shooter if he wants to stay in DC.

Ryan Betley (Penn; Downingtown, PA) Grad transfer. SG. 11.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 1.3 apg; 43% FG, 36% 3-pt, 78% FT. Academics shouldn't be an issue, and seems like he could be a good fit.

Eli Abaev (Austin Peay; Deerfield Beach, FL) Grad transfer. PF. 7.9 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 1.1 apg; 51% FG, 56% FT. Could also be a good replacement for AT underneath.

Tyron 'Ty' Brewer (Southeastern Louisiana; Meridian, MS) Sophomore. SF. 14.9 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 1.5 spg; 48% FG, 35% 3-pt, 67% FT. Leading scorer, but on a bad Lions team this year that was young and in the process of rebuilding.

There are of course a number of former MSM players that have transferred out that JC will be considering. Antonio as mentioned above from UNLV. Oton Janković got injured during his short tenure at Vanderbilt (didn't fare too well in limited time), and of course JC was recruiting him at both Siena and GW so you have to think he will be considered as well.

So far the coaching staff has expressed interest in:
Kobe Webster (Western Illinois)
Cameron Parker (Sacred Heart)
Sam Sessoms (Binghamton)
Hayden Koval (Central Arkansas)
Matthew Moyer (Vanderbilt)

Re: Transfer Season 2020

I could see Sam Sessoms being a priority transfer for St. Joe's.  Local kid and a team looking for an infusion of talent.

It's hard for me to get a grasp of just how many spots we have available to take on transfers right now.  As much as it stinks to hear people leaving the program, it would be easier to envision who would be best fits if we knew exactly who we'd be replacing.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

All recruiting, on and off campus, has been suspended until April 15.  So looks like no updates here for awhile.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Wow, that's quite the restriction if no contact at all.
Takes away one of our great sports of speculating on transfers, which the posters above have done an
excellent job.
Taking a not very wild guess, Arnaldo and Mezie, if he cares about playing time. Then
Javier if he cares about playing time.
Maceo, theoretically, might want to go somewhere else if he feels his huge playing time will come
down next year.
Don't know if there is anyone obvious left from different coaching regimes.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Truly devastating news.

In the face of a global pandemic, a delay in hyperventilating over transfers, 99% of them never connected in any way to GW, will be the true loss to lament here.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

The transfer portal is still going, so that speculation can still help you pass the time at home.   I think 3 decent Wichita St players entered it today (Burton, Stevenson, and Noah Fernandez).  Any of those guys would start for us next year.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Mezie has entered the transfer portal.  I hate that he couldn't figure it out here.  I thought for sure he would be a key contributor this year and last.

Verbal Commits‏ @VerbalCommits 5m
George Washington F Chimezie Offurum (SO) has entered the transfer portal. =0pxhttp://verbalcommits.com/players/chimez=0pxie-offurum=0px …

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Yes Mezie certainly has the size GW needs. I would bet he needs a change of system and scenery to thrive. Too bad it didn’t work here.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Players transferring appears to be the only sports activity going on at this point!! HA!  But seriously, since everyone's season is now over, all coaches are in the process of holding their end-of-the-year meetings with each player, in addition, a number of colleges across the country are closed due to the coronavirus. So, transferring or declaring for the draft is literally the only thing players can do at this point.

How many scholarships does GW have available now that Mezie has transferred out?

I believe at this point all of our scholarships are now accounted for (assuming Hunter Dean, the transfer from Southern Miss, is on scholarship).

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Well, Mezie got the hint by not playing even when we were shellacked.
Toro would be next. If he chooses to go up, may have an opportunity in a good league.

Re: Transfer Season 2020

Good luck to Mezie. He was sadly the guy I envisioned transferring out, especially after he logged no minutes of action in the final game against Fordham. Still think he can be a steal at a lower level if he can figure out how to not overthink things when he's in the game. The raw talent and physical frame are there. Wishing him the best.

We have 1 scholarship open if AT doesn't return next year, and are at the limit if he does return. Given Hunter (eligible midseason) and Noel are coming in, as well as the fact the staff is looking at guys in the portal, I don't see AT staying but would gladly welcome him staying as another proven big who we know can play at this level.

The staff has also followed:
Jacobi Gordon (California; Houston, TX) Sophomore wing. A former 4 star recruit out of HS. Averaged 2.2 ppg, 1.2 rpg; 35% FG, 33% 3-pt, 8-8 FT in 12 GP and 8.9 mpg.

Tahj Eaddy (Santa Clara/Southeast Missouri State; West Haven, CT) Grad Transfer PG. 9.1 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 2.1 apg; 41% FG, 33% 3-pt, 83% FT in 33 GP and 25.2 mpg. Eaddy averaged 15 ppg his sophomore year.

Brendan Barry (Dartmouth; Fair Haven, NJ) Grad Transfer PG. DNP last season. 13.2 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.2 apg; 47% FG, 45% 3-pt, 86% FT in 30 GP and 35.6 mpg.
