GW & A-10 magazine preview

I got a copy of Lindy's Sports 2020-2021 College Basketball preview. Here's what they wrote about GW and the Atlantic 10. GW is picked to finish 8th(George Mason is picked 10th). They have a Good News/ Bad News/ Our Call write-up for every team. For GW, the Good News is, Jamion Christian hit the transfer market hard and has quickly improved the talent. the Bad News is, That's still not enough to make a serious run at the conference's top teams. Our Call is, So long as health and roster make-up stays stable, this is a team on the rise.

In the write-up for GW, they project the starters to be: James Bishop, Maceo Jack, Jamison Battle, Jameer Jr., and Chase Paar. Sloane Seymour will be given the green light off the bench and will probably hit more than 100 three's this year. GW is expected to be among the nation's leaders in 3-pointers made this year with Sloan, Battle(89 threes last year) and Jack(83 threes last year). Hunter Dean is also described as an above-the-rim athlete. They listed Sloan Seymour as the Top Shooter in the league, that's high praise for a newcomer

Re: GW & A-10 magazine preview

Would be pretty pleased to see a big step forward and finish middle of the pack.
probably 2 years away (as in the year after this one) from really pushing up into the top 1/3 of the league buy you can see the trajectory already

Re: GW & A-10 magazine preview

I see no mention of James Bishop-- that omission won't last long. We will be in the top half of the league.

Re: GW & A-10 magazine preview

Certainly we have a young team that is a year or two away, but I would be happy with a middle of the pack team this season.

Re: GW & A-10 magazine preview

Thanks for posting this Thomas. The first thing that jumps out at me is the predicted finish ahead of UMASS.  The Minutemen improved throughout last season.  It's true that we blew them out (on one of those days where we played a near-perfect game) but they went 4-2 down the stretch in the A10, including wins over St. Louis and VCU.  Plus, they have a strong recruiting class coming in courtesy of their Woodstock Academy connection that McCall is cultivating, and TJ Weeks, who shot 32-66 from 3 before his season ended, returns from an injury.  UMASS is my sleeper pick for a Top 4 finish, so I deem a predicted finish ahead of them to be high praise.

Next, we've spent the past three seasons lumped together in this (for the most part) LaSalle-St. Joes-Fordham-Mason-UMASS pack for who was going to be stuck playing on Wednesday of the A10 tournament.  If this prediction turns out to be reality, it would appear that GW and UMASS are breaking away from this bottom-feeding group.  Interestingly, the one new entry according to this forecast is VCU.   The roof certainly did cave in on the Rams last year but this was only a season removed from  a16-2 conference record.  Is VCU a stock that should have been sold a year ago or was last year an aberration?  Finally, the consensus does seem to be that the Bills and Spiders will be the league's best but am most impressed by the Bonnies predicted third place finish.  Most of the top teams in our league have historically had rabid fan bases with strong support.  The Bonnies are hamstrung in many ways relatively speaking but continue under Mark Schmidt to produce better teams than most would expect.  Schmidt might seriously be the most underrated coach in America, and he is arguably the A10's best.

Re: GW & A-10 magazine preview

I like the boldness of the pick for sure. I don't think it's unreasonable for us to finish that high honestly, but it will require us to be a lot more sound defensively. I get why a lot of people are in the "they have a lot of guys to boost the offense, but defense is a question mark" camp and slot us around 10th or 11th, but hopefully we will see a bit more zone and pressure this season. JC said that he wanted to the freshmen to learn man first (and I get not overwhelming them!), but I don't know why you wouldn't mix in a bit of zone in leagues like the A10 and AAC, where teams are brick city from behind the arc minus a few exceptions, especially after the line moved back last season.

I'm a big Gilyard fan, but PotY seems a tad questionable. Think it has to be between Mitchell of UMass and Crutcher of Dayton, but I guess it's possible if Richmond wins the league. The Spiders are very much a sum of their parts than really one guy though, although Gilyard definitely shines.

I want James to win newcomer of the year over the other Bishop, but it will be tough for sure, especially with URI getting a lot of their transfers eligible. Some of those guys will be by default productive with the number of departures they had. Fatts can't do it all.

Not sure exactly what "top shooter" means - I guess it has more to do with makes than percentage. I think one of our guys is probably the favorite to win, although I would probably give the edge to Jamison. If it is by percentage, I think the shear volume of attempts we will hoist will probably hamper our efficiency to win it. I also see a "best shooter" award listed - maybe that's it?

In terms of the other teams:
Richmond - definitely warrant a top spot. I was surprised by how good they were defensively last year after being kind of meh for a good bit of Mooney's tenure.
St. Louis - Jimerson will give them a boost shooting-wise, and hopefully Thatch being healthy will improve depth. Their lousy FT shooting has to be mentioned though as it limits them from truly being a threat to advance in the tournament in my opinion.
St. Bona - I like them in the 3-4 range, but Osun has to stay healthy. They are just not the same team without him.
Dayton - Guards are still great, but their bigs are a big question mark. Their frontcourt is talented for sure, but Johnson is coming off an injury, and I've never been a big Tshimanga guy. The rest of the guys haven't played a season of college basketball.
Duquesne - Strikes me as a high floor, low ceiling team. Carry was a bit disappointing last year in some respects - he was steady like his freshman year, but didn't really take the next step. Weathers is definitely a guy who can play many positions, but I've never understood those who sing his praises; he's solid but not a game-changer. Hughes is a good big down low, although there is personally not a player in the league that I hate more.
URI - Since they got all those transfers healthy, hard not to slot them at least at 6, and I think their ceiling is a lot higher than Duquesne's for sure. There are questions of chemistry (especially with the Mitchell twins) but to be fair, similar questions were asked about last year's Dayton team in the preseason. This URI team is definitely not 19-20 Dayton, but they have talent on paper.
Davidson - I somehow don't feel the JAG loss will be as big as it would appear. Grady started to find his old form late in the season, and Lee is going to be dangerous for years to come. Brajkovic also gives them a presence down low. They could finish higher, but kind of like us they need to improve a lot defensively - athleticism is lacking.
UMass - Certainly came on down the stretch, but I'm kind of losing trust in McCall. He turned over this staff completely and hasn't really shouldered too much of the blame for their lack of success. Mitchell is a stud, Weeks is a good shooter, and Santos is the ultimate glue guy, but at times the team looked lost defensively which was on full display when they played us. They could finish 4th, but I need to see something from McCall for them to be higher than 7th right now.
George Mason - People always say continuity leads to success, but I feel like that is overrated beyond a certain point. Greene, Miller, Wilson, Oduro, Johnson are all solid players (Wilson in particular has come a long ways) but I don't really care for the downhill offense they run. Injuries have played a role the past few years, but how much higher will they be with Boyd back and losing Kier? Paulsen is a nice guy, but I don't see a high ceiling here at all. They lost to us twice with pretty much the same team they have now.
VCU - I think they will finish higher than 10th just based on where they have always been, but there's no getting around how young this team is. It's probably a good thing that Evans and Jenkins graduated - they were in and out of the lineup and that messed up with continuity. Bones is a stud, and I am really high on Ace Baldwin - he is a baller.
La Salle - Another high floor, low ceiling team. Jack Clark's return will be nice for their depth. Spencer is a good shooter. But like pretty much every year, they have a bunch of 4-star players who are horribly inefficient which is keeping them back from rising any more.
St. Joe's - Better than last year, but it would be tough to replicate winning just 6 games all year again. Funk returning gives them a shooting threat. Daly is also back which is big, but the Hawks were miserable defensively and I don't think that suddenly gets better with Longpre still manning the paint. Lange also has to prove he can win. Navy isn't the easiest of jobs with their strict requirements, but Lange didn't fare too well there.
Fordham - Decent bigs and will be great on defense again (hopefully we are more prepared this time around). Their offense is garbage though and lacks any cohesion.

Re: GW & A-10 magazine preview

You guys are right about the somewhat high expectations for GW this year. GW has been picked to finish(and finished) in the bottom 4 of the A-10 for several years now, being picked 8th could be viewed as a sign of progress. GW can avoid the dreaded Wednesday Bottom-Feeder 4 play-in games!!

About The Bishop's!! Both of them were in the Class of 2019, St.Joe's Dahmir may have been ranked slightly higher than James, Dahmir also won 3 straight Philadelphia Public School titles, so he's probably considered a Philly schoolboy legend, who is coming back home to play. Dahmir will have more opportunities than James Bishop to put up numbers because he'll probably have the greenest of green lights on a team with a limited amount of talent. Those factors are probably why Dahmir Bishop will be considered the favorite to be the A-10's top newcomer. Also, I think the forecasters saw how well GW's trio of freshman did last year, along with Maceo Jack returning and understand that James Bishop may not be leaned on to carry the team/put up numbers like Dahmir will at St.Joe's.

About UMass,  they did write in the 'Our Call' prediction: If the pieces around Tre Mitchell are game ready, this pick will be way too low. So they seem to agree with Gwmayhem and dmvpiranha about the tremendous potential of this team. Gwmayhem brought up the Woodstock Academy pipeline(I believe they have 7 guys who played at Woodstock Academy) at UMass, they should have a lot of experience playing with each other and may indeed be game ready. UMass also added American U grad transfer Mark Gasperini.

About VCU, I was also shocked to see them picked in the bottom 4. I understand they slumped badly toward the end of last season, but they are still VCU!! I can't see them making such a dramatic fall(conference contenders to Wednesday play-In round) like this. Lindy's wrote that VCU lost 5 of its top 6 scorers, including their entire starting lineup, but brought in what looks to be a Core 4/Fab 4-like freshman class(which includes Ace Baldwin from St.Frances in Baltimore and could have been high school rivals with Bishop, Brelsford and maybe Paar) , 2 transfers and return sophomore "Bones" Hyland who was one of the top freshman in the A-10 last year.

dmvpiranha,  I agree about Osun Osunniyi staying healthy, I actually think he has NBA potential when you look at the size, athleticism, shot-blocking and rebounding. His potential is off the charts, similar to Obi Toppin last year. Obi was also very raw as a freshman, and everything came together for him as a sophomore last year. Osun may not become a lottery pick like Obi, but he should be able to become a dominant post presence like Obi.

In former GW player news, they actually projected Kevin Marfo to make 3rd Team All-SEC, and picked Texas A&M to finish 9th in the SEC and wrote about him, His adjustment to the higher level will loom large as low-major transfers have not always come in ready to produce similarly at the major conference level. There is not a lot on Toro except brings heft on backboards, but is also a skilled player and fine athlete. St.John's is picked to finish 6th, Georgetown is picked 10th. Danny Hurley and UConn is picked to finish 3rd in their return to the Big East Collin Smith is 3rd Team All-AAC, and they are picked to finish 7th. Jair Bolden is listed as Butler's Top Newcomer, Butler lost their 2 leading scorers from last year, so there could be an opportunity for Bolden to put up numbers playing off the ball as Butler returns their starting point guard who was one of the top assist/turnover poing guards in the Big East last year. Bradley returns 3 starters/2 All-Conference type of players, UMass freshman Sean East II was also granted a waiver to play this year, so Terry Nolan may have to take a secondary role with this team initially.

Re: GW & A-10 magazine preview

Grant Golden will make 1st team All A10, barring injury, he's had that type of trajectory, big year ahead for him, I'd even say contender for POY.

Re: GW & A-10 magazine preview

How can one be considered the top shooter in the conference in his first year in the conference but not be the best shooter among the newcomers in the conference?

Kind of like an offensive skill position player being named MVP of the NFL (like Lamar Jackson last season) but someone else winning the Best Offensive Player Award (like Michael Thomas last season) .
