I echo Moneybox thoughts. Bishop gives and he takes. With 20 seconds left in the first half and in possession of the ball, GW is up by 3. A chance to maintain this or go up by 5, instead Bishop takes a rushed shot, UMD comes down for an emphatic dunk to close the gap to one. Not a  smart play. Early, in the second half , Bishop is not aware of a pass by Lindos  and another turnover occurs. JC calls him over. The team played hard with great intensity. A win was possible. GW needs smarter point guard play.

Bishop didn’t take the shot. It was Bamisile. Criticize him for that, not James.

I’m glad you mentioned that moment where he didn’t see the pass and JC called him over. That was such a great coaching moment. You could tell Bishop was rattled, between the poor shooting and not seeing that pass, but JC really calmed him down. Put his hands on shoulders and gave him a hug. I’d like to think that support, rather than ripping the kid as most of our coaches would have done over the years, is part of what helped James settle down enough to get back to his game down the stretch.

Correct it was Bamisile not Bishop.

Re: GW vs Maryland Game Thread

The good ....

Our defense was as good as I've seen it under JC for the better part of the game. We got hurt on missed block outs.

When the ball moved early we were getting looks. We had moments when the ball stopped moving late first half and throughout the second that cost us.

Really thought Lindo played well and Joe had a great first half (came back to earth in the second). Adams was sneaky solid and while Bishop struggled for 30 minutes to find his shot, it was good to see him hit tough shots late in the game.

Unsung hero was Samuels who after sitting for 35 minutes came in and gave us some strong play. Call it an educated guess but we will be seeing him more especially over the next couple of weeks. I'm not a doctor but my sense tells me that Hunter will be out a bit - probably a week or two. The fact that he had to go to locker room is a tell tale sign that it wasn't something he could shake off. But we will see.

The bad ...

Post play both ends. We couldn't generate any offense in the post  We had one FG attempt in 35 minutes from the 5 spot. That might be some sort of record. We missed block outs that led to 17 offensive rebounds and 17 second chance points.

The ugly ...

The Refs. 29-8 in free throw attempts. It was almost 32 minutes in before we attempted a second free throw, No other way to say it but we got f'ed on the road. It's like the old referee joke MJ told about a game when his BU squad was giving Kentucky all they could handle at Rupp. There was a particularly bad call with the game a 5-point game with about 4 minutes to go. So he asked the ref why he made the call. The Ref said ... "You boys are pretty good but you aren't beating us tonight." The game was never in doubt for Maryland last night because the refs were going to see to it - intentionally or unintentionally.

Re: GW vs Maryland Game Thread

lol ya gtfo. Not enough games for this to be physically possibly BY December. If you are talking by the end of december, you are saying this team goes 3-9 until then. Clown college.

Re: GW vs Maryland Game Thread

Free Quebec, stop acting like 2 others we have seen here before (1 being banned).
Rising, great summary. Regardless of how bad UMD may have played, my only concern is with GW and whether or not they show improvement from each game. JC had them ready to play and they appeared to show improvement from the St Francis game.

It's going to be a long season so enough with the "moral victory" talk and putting GW players on the A-10 1st Team after each game. We are not where we were in 2013 when our ML coached team beat the Terps (or where we were when we beat UVA, Creighton, Wichita State and all the others). Hopefully we will get there in my lifetime - and only if GW changes their ways and supports our Athletic Dept in a way in which we can compete year in and year out.

Enjoy the December ride against a "cupcake schedule" because any Atlantic 10 team (including Fordham) should win 8 out of our next 10 games. Doing so should help JC instill some confidence in these players until they can gel together and be ready to compete in the A-10.

Re: GW vs Maryland Game Thread

I am as satisfied as one can be with a loss because we played with great heart, didn't fold and showcased the athleticism of the new team--and the ability to push the ball in transition.
We did get torched inside and there is still an unwillingness to aggressively rebound in general, which may be the result of our strategy offensively and our limited depth defensively. That was a weakness everyone knew about we needed to find a better way to disguise this weakness somehow. I was calling for at least a bit more Samuels last two games and though hardly a cure-all, seemed to be worth a shot.
It was posted that Amir Harris played only 7 minutes. He could have had some of Bishop's early minutes because despite his injury fragility, Amir is willing to mix it up more inside than the average GW player and he also has some defensive savvy.
Nonetheless, we achieved more than expected against a real team. Unfortunately, we aren't playing any more teams of distinction (if you can stand affording MD that honor) in our squishy soft OOC schedule which may come back to haunt us.
So while it may have been a heartening moral victory and lead us to believe this team's talent level is real, we won't really know for sometime. And there was no solid reason, based on the past few years to believe we would be good or event competent OOC until the ball was rolled out and we saw what Bamisile, for example, could accomplish.
Meanwhile, let's not slam someone who offers another (needed in my view if inelegantly expressed at times) perspective. We have some regular hyperbole here on both sides, positive and negative. There was no reason to believe we would be great and we certainly weren't on Tuesday against a low-level NEC team. So, unless someone says anything highly inappropriate or is consistently baiting others, let's give it as pass.
And not fall into the trap of calling names and attacking others.
Let's just enjoy the unexpected windfall of a close game against what is expected to be a very good opponent that revives (probably for the last time in a while) a local rivalry. And see what happens when we play some tougher teams from January on.
There really aren't enough of us to turn on each other, especially when we are feeling a bit more (very guardedly) optimistic and savoring what may or may not be a bit of light at the end of the long, dark tunnel.

Nah I know I was just talking trash. This cupcake schedule guarantees a few wins at minimum. Real test is in conference

I absolutely LOVE it but ONLY when it goes along with 20 and 8 with 2 blocks and 2 steals.

Re: GW vs Maryland Game Thread

As for Bishop, it's what we already knew: The game is either all Bishop or it's no Bishop.
