Dear GW Administration,
If you want to restore faith and hope in GW basketball, please don’t hire a coach with a career .450 winning percentage as a head coach. He may be one of the best college basketball players or all time, but so is Patrick Ewing and look how well that is working out.Never ever underestimate GW's apparent need to win the press conference after so much bad publicity.
How do you win a press conference by hiring a losing coach who no one will be excited about?
That's the point. They think name recognition equals big positive spin when in reality you are correct.

Looked up Manning's record. Seems like only one winning season at Wake Forest. League record could be at least closer to understandable, but generally they pad the OOC.
Also, he didn't retain Tyler Cavanaugh, though he had just come in as coach.
On the plus side, he probably knows how to recruit freshmen at a higher level than we have been doing, with an exception of Brayon and perhaps JNJ.
Also, given his size and ability, if there's any way to change his name and pass him off a graduate transfer or something, despite his age, that could give us an immediate boost.

Also a stupid question re Mike Pegues. If we were looking at him, wouldn't we also want to look at Chris Mack? Would we completely be out of the running for him? Am I over-selling our program a little bit? There are a lot of quality coaches out there, both former P5 coaches (C. Martin, Wojo, Mack, Howland) and solid up and coming coaches from lower majors (Becker, Holloway, Langel), and it doesn't appear we are looking at any of them.
None of those P5 guys would likely give GW a sniff because of the historical level of investment and dysfunction. You want guys like that to be interested you need to fix the structural issues first.

Add Tim Jankovich (SMU) and possibly LaVal Jordan (Butler) to the mix.

LOL, from phone cards and toilet plungers through to Omar Williams and a vindictive sex predator AD, I have never experienced that.

Code for "we are headed to the Patriot League."

Not sure if it means anything but Mike Pegues started following Brayon Freeman on Twitter.
But for all we know Pegues is about to be hired as an assistant at Maryland and is recruiting Brayon to go there.

Interesting development.. I like what I've heard from Pegues.. Seems like he would be a good fit

That could mean a lot, unless Pegues is following Brayon for another position.

Didn't know much about Pegues except the Louisville interim job. Found out that he's the all-time leading scorer for Delaware (+2,000 points), playing under Mike Brey.
Watched a few interviews, but I thought this was helpful in understanding his style

A Maryland writer says it could down to Pegues or Caputo
Sounds like the George Washington job could come down to Mike Pegues or Miami assistant Chris Caputo, who's been with Larranaga for 20 years. Delaware coach Martin Ingelsby also in the mix

I'm beginning to understand why this move was made. GW men's basketball has not received this level of recognition and (positive) attention since winning the NIT.

Interesting, still think Caputo is at the top of the list given that some people in GW’s admin are Miami connected.

At this point we should all repeat the following everyday ...
"It is easier for GW to sell hope to their donors and fan base than to spend money while digging in and working with what they have to develop a winning program. As we have seen they wind up in the same spot in a few years only to do the same thing all over again. The donors and fan base just don't realize they are being played."

What do you suggest to fix this?

Rising, I have realized our administration has been incompetent and dysfunctional for over 2 decades now. Just when we have some success, like in years 3-5 of ML's tenure, we self implode and destroy everything we built.
GW is not playing us. Just look, we have no donors or fanbase. We will hire the next coach and if he/she is successful, some bad decision will set us back again. However, like the last 2 hires, and because this hire will be made by Tanya, we will extend our misery by another 3 or 4 years again.

Simple ... 5-point plan
1. Charter flights so student athletes can return to class quickly and miss less class.(like the rest of the A-10)
2. Academic standards commensurate with the rest of the A-10 (like we used to have)
3. More money for assistants (salaries are below market for other A-10 schools)
4. Practice Facility - start construction ASAP
5. Revamping of Sports Information - when was the last time you saw GW regularly covered in local media? Lack of exposure hurts the program significantly both in terms of attendance and visibility with recruits.
Now this won't be cheap. Charter flights are $35,000 or more a pop. The practice facility will be millions. You need proabaly another $250,000 annually for assistants.

You can't have it both ways. We get that you were and are a defender of JC. That's fine. We appreciate that. We all would have liked to see him win at GW. But you can't now place the blame on the lack of funding at GW for JC's losing.(BTW -- I am no fan of how the GW administration has failed to support sports.) Plenty of knowledgeable basketball people will tell you that it is not impossible to win at GW. And there's even a fairly recent example of someone who won at GW -- Mike Lonergan. It won't be easy for new coach. But we have to believe it can be done.

Sounds great. All for it. Although, let's not get carried away with your academic standards point. There is evidence that academic standards weren't all that high in recent years.

Goes to what Poog said in the beginning of the thread. Our alumni have always had alligator arms when it comes to giving $. The charter flight issue should’ve been settled once and for all in 2014 after the NCAA run.
If you don’t want either the Provost or Mark Diaz determining the direction of our basketball team, then we do what other schools do and make the basketball program as self sufficient as possible. And that means forking over cash.
