GW All Decade Team

Everyone else on the internet is doing it so I figured why not kill some time until the next GW game talking about our all-decade team.  So anyone from 2010-2019.

My list:
G Creek
G Garino
F Watanabe
F Cavanaugh
F Larsen

I realize the inclusion of Mo Creek may be a bit of a stretch since he was only here for 1 year, but ML hit it out of the park bringing him here.  He was exactly what that team needed in that moment, hit a huge game winning bucket against MD, and led us to our last NCAA tournament appearance.

Re: GW All Decade Team

Isaiah Armwood should get some votes

Re: GW All Decade Team

Tony Taylor was also pretty good, though he played on bad teams and only half of his career was this decade.

Re: GW All Decade Team

My team would be:

Garino
Cavanaugh
Yuta
Zeek Armwood
Larsen

If it has to be by position, then I’d put in Joe Mac narrowly over Larsen and Tony Taylor and Keithan savage.  Savage was the best player of that group, but he got hurt and missed half a year, then ultimately transferred.  Joe Mac and Tony Taylor is close but joe played a key role on a tourney team and won an NIT title, so you have to give it to him over Tony (who was a good scorer on a bad team).  But without position, I give it to KevLar over Joe because he was such a weapon down low and such a good passing big.

Garino would be my player of the decade because he was so good for so long.

Yuta became the best defender by the end of his junior year, shockingly perhaps better than garino (which I never expected).

Tyler was the best overall player,  but only here two years and garino’s two way prowess and 4 years of stardom gives him the edge.

Armwood was also only here two years but he was easily the best athlete and a dominant player who could take it to bcs bigs with no problem.  I think he kind of gets overlooked because of the core 4 (or 3) but he was key to our resurgence.

For me, Creek isn’t up with those other guys.  He was a great one year rental, but can’t credit him over the 2-4 year guys above.

Re: GW All Decade Team

I agree largely with FQ.  Everything GW0509 said about Creek is true but I think he falls short of the first 5.  If Mo were not on that team, maybe Kethan develops more quickly and that team is almost or about as good.  Take Zeke off of that team and i don't believe it's going anywhere.  Armwood was simply put too valuable.

Tyler and Pato are my top two players.  I give the edge to Tyler because his offensive skills were way above anyone else under consideration.  Plus, he was a willing rebounder and the glue that kept the 2015-16 team together.  I can understand Pato for his incredible defense and improved offense over time, plus the fact that he spent four years at GW.  Yuta makes the first team but I grade him slightly below Tyler and Pato.  This leaves Tony, Joe and Kevin for the final spot.  I'd love to pick Joe, particularly for his numerous clutch moments, incredible toughness, and as FQ said, successfully running an NCAA and 2 NIT teams.   My qualm with Joe was that he just wasn't assertive enough in the offense, often passing up very good shots, and was beat a bit too frequently on defense.  He was selfless to a fault on offense, and was not gifted with above-average quickness on defense.  KevLar had unique skills for a big man but he was a bit too inconsistent to put on the first team.  He would often follow-up poor outings with great ones but there were a few too many poor ones where he just didn't appear to be overly motivated.  So, I'll go with Tony who gave his all during some turbulent times and through a coaching transition, playing at a consistently high level throughout his GW career.

Tony, Pato, Yuta, Zeke and Tyler.

Re: GW All Decade Team

You know what's kinda sad - no one from that group has made the A10 1st Team.

Looks like making the NBA is easier than that recognition. Of the group, I would say Cavanaugh got snubbed (believe he made 2nd team).

Can't say im too familiar with the players before 13' but my lineup would be

PG - Joe Mac
SG - Garino
SF - Yuta
PF - Cavanaugh
C - Larson

Bench - Creek, Tony Taylor, Collin Smith, Jordan Roland

CS and JR are lighting it up at different schools this season but I'm including them anyway

Re: GW All Decade Team

I'd be interested in seeing this list four years from now.  If you bought into the idea that they were part of this decade's team (which technically, they are), I wouldn't be surprised to see Jameer get some votes. Feel free to disagree, but I think he's a better athlete than anyone that's played for us in the last 30 years.

BM, good catch. I can't believe I forgot about JR!  My bad.  But, can you think of anyone else?

Re: GW All Decade Team

Dirkk Surles, Pops, Regis Koundja, Omar Williams off the top of my head.

Re: GW All Decade Team

Similar to FQ, I weigh 4 year sustained performance higher than 1 or 2 year transfers.  However, O also consider Armwood a key building block and inside presence:
Tony Taylor
Pato
Yuta
Isiah
Cavanaugh

Bench Joe Mac, Kevin Larsen,

Re: GW All Decade Team

Dirkk Surles was an amazing athlete. Could do a reverse dunk that would make your head spin.
Pops, too. For example, his freshman year dunking his own free throw miss,
Danilo/Jr, of course. Almost made Lakers as a point guard, not his natural position.
Regis, too. He could block a shot and come down the other end with a layup in the blink of an eye. But he didn't near live up to potential, for a number of reasons.
Actually Montrell McDonald, whose short career at GW was cut short by supposedly throwing a water bottle at Hobbs, was also quite athletic. Scary to opponents on a press, Also somewhat scary to us with the ball.
22and F is right. Don't know yet where he ranks on the 30 year scale, but Jameer is incredibly athletic, it seems from what we've seen. Raw talent that can be shaped. At least potential to be great.
We don't see it much, but Juice is quite athletic.
Sure, we've missed a number of players in a 30-year time span, like perhaps Nimbo Hammonds.

JJ Brade, David Pellom and Lasan Kromah also all come to mind.

Re: GW All Decade Team

4 year Starter and Floor General JoeMac would have to make my all decade team as well.
Pato is a lock.   BigKev TC and Yuta round out my top 5.

Those are certainly some great GW athletes!  I think in 2023 we will be looking back and agreeing that Jameer's athletic ability was equal to or better than any of them.
