Re: Preseason Ratings

No respect can be a motivator!

Re: Preseason Ratings

Respect needs to be earned.
Big difference between these 2 ratings. Not so sure I would rank GW ahead of UMass and St Bonnies based on recent history.

Re: Preseason Ratings

didnt want to start a new thread
so i will put this here
i will assume that this low score is because CC was late coming on and getting a non conference schedule together

in the future these needs to improve - for multiple reasons

Re: Preseason Ratings

Agreed, Basketball Jones. Caputo talked about his scheduling philosophy a bunch in this interview with WRGW (https://open.spotify.com/episode/7sbvR6gqK81GGvHxcpQIuZ?si=5a9eb22fee7e44d6). Basically he wants to play winnable games and get into conference play having won ~70% of his games. Ideally they'll be able to play better teams next season and still get to that 70% mark

Re: Preseason Ratings

If I was coming in as a new head coach from a Power 5 conference that had just seen the Elite 8 with mid-major Final Four pedigree, I would be thinking about what benchmarks I need to hit to get my first job at a top-100 program. With where GW has been, it's three things:

1. An NCAA bid.
2. No losing records after Year 1, and ideally none at all.
3. No scandals.

The only thing that CC can do to move his career forward this season is win some games against bottom feeders and recruit his ass off. If GW can beat Hofstra and steal a game in Hawai'i, they can conceivably go 10-3 in the non conference, 6-12 in conference and still land at 16-15 going into the A10 Tournament.

*Edited for clarity

Re: Preseason Ratings

Here's Patrick Stevens' Preview for Atlantic10.com

"Bottom line: The Colonials are neither young nor inexperienced, and their starting five should be solid relative to the rest of the Atlantic 10. But they can afford injuries to their top-shelf players less than most. Caputo has spent his career working with smart teams that generally didn't give away games at George Mason and Miami. If GW can absorb those traits, it could make a run at the top half of the league."

Includes quotes from Coach Caputo. He makes the case that GW could make a run for the top half of the league, which is more bullish than I'm willing to go. To Stevens' credit though, he's watched a lot of GW over the years, and really knows his stuff. I do think talking about GW bringing back 6 of its top 8 scorers when the two who left are Bamisile and Freeman is perhaps a little generous with the data.

Yes, it's a little disingenuous when those two combined represented almost 40% of GW's scoring last season.

Chris Caputo takes over after spending time as Miami's assistant coach. I actually like the 1-2 combo of Ricky Lindo and James Bishop but there just hasn't been success here.
