Other Games Thread/A10 2022-23

If my math is correct, A10 is a mediocre 44 - 44 in non-conference play after a 3 - 5 Friday.  Besides GW, UMass (5-1) and Loyola (2-4) won.

For those who were there and will never forget Drake's meltdown and GW's comeback in March 1995, that sent GW to its first Sweet Sixteen, the Bulldogs did it again.  After a 10 point lead in the second half and a 5 point lead in the closing minutes, UMass tied the game in regulation, and won the overtime 17 - 0.  22 - 0 closing run.  100 - 83 final.  Drake had 30 turnovers in the game.  This is a solid win for UMass, as Drake only previous loss was to ranked Iowa, and they beat ranked Nebraska, which is still receiving votes.  Minutewomen are up to 5 votes in the USA Today poll, and if they beat host FIU on Sunday, they might get a few more votes.  UMass had a good win at Harvard, which started 2 - 0 against URI and Boston College at home.  They lost at Tennessee, rallying at the end to make the final score in single digits.   Of course the Vols have been struggling, at 2 - 4.  After a midweek game hosting Yale, UMass will be tested again in Tempe with games against 5 - 0 Arizona State, which just beat American, and 6 - 1 Missouri.

St Joe's is 5 - 0, with a big win at Vandy, and Big 5 wins over Penn and Temple.  GW hosts the Hawks on Jan 4.  URI rebounded from its loss to Harvard with 3 wins, including over Providence.  LaSalle is 5 - 2 with a loss to Howard and to DII Alaska Anchorage in the Great Alaska Shootout.  VCU is a disappointing 2 - 4, but has a win over Seton Hall.  St Louis (1-5) and Dayton (0-5) are struggling under new coaches.  Mason lost 3, then won 3 in a row.  But since lost 2 tough games.

Re: Other Games Thread/A10 2022-23

A 10 did better on Saturday (4-3) and Sunday (5 - 3.). There are 7 teams with winnings records and 7 with losing records and GW right in the middle at 4 - 4.

Besides GW's 2 losses, results were:

Saturday
      Belmont 78.          St Louis 68
URI 66.                Southeast Missouri State 49
     VCU 75.                Wisconsin 67.     Badgers are only 3 - 5 but it's still a win over a Big 10 team
     Fordham 78.         South Dakota 65.       Rams are 4 - 3.
    Cleveland St. 64.    St Bona 40.     Bonnies are 1 - 5.
    Richmond 80.         Idaho 49

Sunday:

     St Louis 77.       Air Force 58.   SLU is now 2 - 7.
URI 75.              Samford  63.      Rams are now 5 -1 after opening loss at Harvard
     St Joe's 79.        North Florida 56.      Hawks are 6 - 0
    Duquense. 77     Marshall 72.       Dukes are 5 - 1
UMass 95.          FIU.  78,     Minutewomen are 6 -1 after sweeping FIU tournament
    N Illinois 67.        Richmond 64.     Spiders are 5 - 2.
    App State. 84.     Davidson 82.         Wildcats are 2 - 5

Re: Other Games Thread/A10 2022-23

Rough start for the week, with A10 teams going 0 - 3 against weak foes,

Monday:     Miami, Ohio    79,    Loyola, Chicago.   53.    Miami is 2 - 4.   Ramblers are 2 - 5 under new coach Allison Guth, who had 6 successful seasons at Yale.  Five consecutive winning years including a WBI posteason tournament championship.

Tuesday.:   Penn.  72,  La Salle. 59.          Penn, 2 - 4, lead by 21 at the half.  Explorers fell to 5 - 3,

Ohio   52,    Dayton   51.    Bobcats are 2 - 4, won on a field goal with 3+ seconds left and are GW's next opponent.  Dayton's first year coach is Tamika Williams-Jeter, 2 time national champion as a player at UConn.  Horrible shooting by both teams, in the 30% range.  Winless Flyers were 3 - 7 from the line.

Player of the Week is Sidney Taylor of UMass, averaging 26.7 points and 6.7 rebounds in 3 wins.  Repeat Rookie of the Week (3x). Laura Ziegler of St Joe's.  Averaged 12.5 points and 8 rebounds in 2 games.

Yale visits UMass tonight.  Bulldogs are 4 - 3 with season opening losses at Fordham and St Joe's, and most recently to Houston Christian, which apparently used to be known as the more familiar Houston Baptist.

UMass is now receiving votes in both the AP and USA Today/Coaches poll.  In the latter, they went down from 5 votes to 4 despite going 3 - 0.

Re: Other Games Thread/A10 2022-23

After a 3 - 0 Friday, A10 teams went 5 - 1 on Saturday.

LaSalle (6-3) beat Lehigh.  Fordham (5-4) beat Manhattan.
George Mason (5-5).kept AU winless with their 5th straight home win.  Patriots have the 9th best record in the league.  Host Loyola (3-6) beat Bradlley by 3 after trailing by 11 at the half.
St Louis (3-8) continues tp rebound from a rough start by beating Illinois State (5-2.). Redbirds' only other loss was to UNLV in the Thanksgiving tournament.
Missouri beat UMass (8-2) 71 - 66 with a barrage of 15 three pointers to just 5 for the Minutewomen, who were without high scoring Sydney Taylor, who suffered a knee/ankle injury on Friday.  I haven't seen a report yet.  Makennah White, first off the bench when she isn't starting, is injured and has been out several games.  Laila Fair (St Joe's) has filled in well, now that she's finally healthy enough to play.  Sam Breen, in her usual 40 minutes, was 19/7, 3 assists, 4 steals.

Eight teams in action today,  including winless Dayton hosting Florida, and Duke at Richmond.  St Joe's will try to stay unbeaten against Drexel.

With GW and St Bonaventure winning tonight, A10 teams are 8 - 8 this week since Monday.

Bonnies (3-8) won at home, beating Binghamton (6-6) 50 - 48, despite shooting 4 -11 from line.

Five games on the schedule on Saturday.  Undefeated St Joe's visits #25 Villanova (8-2.).   Both teams are
2 - 0 in Big 5 play.  Hawks received a vote in USA Today/Coaches poll.  Villanova has lost to Baylor and Creighton.  Has wins over Princeton, Penn, Temple and South Florida, and most recently American.

Columbia (8-2) visits Amherst to take on 8 - 2 UMass, which got 4 votes in USA Today/Coaches poll.  Columbia's losses were to Vanderbilt and Iowa State.  Have wins over Memphis, Seton Hall and Miami., Fla.  Lions average over 80 points a game with 5 players in double figures.  Sydney Taylor is cleared to play for UMass but Makenna White is questionable.

TCU (4-5) lost at hone to Missouri State (3-4).   The 3 ejected players, Cravens,Ibeh and Makolo, were not in the box score, although I didn't see any confirmation they were suspended.

Re: Other Games Thread/A10 2022-23

A10 teams went 3 - 1 this afternoon with 1 cancellation.

Loyola Chicago (4-8) beat Elon (4-6) 72 - 46, behind Anna Brown's 19 points.  Elon of the CAA has lost 3 in a row to A10 opponents.  Previous loss before that was at Howard.

Stephen F Austin (10-2) beat George Mason (7-6) 90 - 62.

St Joe's (10-1) had a surprisingly close game against Wright State (1-10), winning 70-62.  Talya Brugler had 27 points for the Hawks and MacKenizie Smith had 21.  St Joe's had zero bench points.

Richmond (9-3) rallied to beat Ball State (9-3) 75 - 73.  Addie Budnick hit a last second 3 pointer on an assist from Grace Townsend, who also had the rebound off a Ball State missed 3 pointer with just over 20 seconds left.  Budnick was 1 - 5 beyond the arc and had 13 points.  Townsend had 9 assists.  Siobhan Ryan had 27 points.  All 3 are juniors.  Freshman Rachel Ullmark had 13 points off the bench.

VCU withdrew from a Tulane tournament due to Covid protocols.  The other 3 teams are still in the tournament some I assume the issue was with VCU.

Re: Other Games Thread/A10 2022-23

6 A10 teams won today, including 3 improving on their losing records.  The 3 losers included the Philly schools and the Bonnies.

Duquense (10-3) beat Howard (3-9) 68 - 55.

Richmond (10-3) beat Tarleton State (6-5) 55 - 43.  Addie Budnick scored 28 points on 12 - 13 shooting, 3 -3 on 3 pointers and 1 - 1 FT..

UMass (9-3) broke its 2 games losing streak by rolling over winless St Peter's (0-9) by 81 -34.  Sidney Taylor had 17.  Sam Breen had a quiet 13/9, with 3 assists, 3 blocks, and 3 traveling violations.  Lots of moving the pivot foot violations called on both teams.  Makennah White returned from a 5 games absence with a double-double, 15/11.

Loyola Chicago (5-8) beat Idaho (5-6) 56 - 44.

Davidson improved to 6 - 7 by beating rival Charlotte (5-5) by 68 - 55, and winning the inaugural 704 Cup series trophy,  Elie Suphin had 25 points and 10 rebounds.

Re: Other Games Thread/A10 2022-23

GW's win over Coppin State and URI's loss at Wake Forest last week ended the pre Christmas portion of the A10 schedule.  Wake Forest (9-4) beat the Rams 57 - 45.  Deacons are 9 - 4 but their losses were to Missouri and Alabama in a tournament and to ACC foe Virginia and Syracuse.  Aftrer its opening loss at Harvard, URI had won 9 in a row until the recent loss.  They are only 1 - 2 in true road games, with 6 home wins.  More power to them if you can get teams to come to Kingston.  They played a respectible schedule.

Wednesday's schedule inciudes Rhode Island visiting Princeton and the first league game, with Loyola Chicago visiting St Louis.  Buffalo's game at St Bonaventure was postponed from Wednesday to Thursday.

I've been a bit disappointed with the non conference performance but there's been improvement.  Overall record is now up to 99 - 90.  The teams with losing records have added some wins lately, maybe as some get used to new coaches.

GW at 8 - 5 has the 6th best record.  There are 9 teams with winning records.  And Davidson stands at 6-7 and hosts Morgan State tomorrow, which could mean a 10th team (or 2/3 of the conference) at .500 and better.

Re: Other Games Thread/A10 2022-23

On Wednesday, A10 teams went 3 - 2 in non-conference games while Loyola Chicago beat St Louis in the conference opener.

Princeton (8-3). 56.          URI (9-3)  54.     Rams led by 1 with 25 seconds left before being tied with one made FT.  They turned the ball over on an offensive foul and lost on a lay up at the buzzer,.  Maybe Toure had a double double at 15/10.  I just noticed that usual starting guard Dolly Cairns (8.6 points per game) missed both this game and the loss at Wake Forest.  Wasn't able to learn the reason.

Fordham (8-5)  85.        Post (7-7)  54.

Howard (4-9)  79.           VCU (3-9)  57.    Howard is 2 - 2 against the A10, with a season opening win over LaSalle.  GW beat them.  Another Bison win is over American.

Davidson.(7-7)  65.          Morgan State (7-6).    Elie Sutphin scored 24 points and Suzi-Rose Deegan had 19.

UMaa (10-3)  77.  Dartmouth (2-12).  58.    As usual, Minutewomen had a slow start and trailed by 1 after the first quarter.  Very sloppy.  Finished with 21 turnovers.  Sam Breen had her 7th double double,  with 20 points and 10 rebounds, plus 2 assists, 5 steals and 4 turnovers.  Ber'Nyah Mayo scorned 17 and had 7 assists to 1 turnover.  Makenna White continued to play well since her return, with 15 points and 5 rebounds.  UMass was just 3 - 17 from beyond the arc.  Sydney Taylor was 1 - 9, and finished with 9 points.  Destiny Philoxy had a tough game with 4 assists and 4 turnovers.

Loyola (6-8)  60.  St Louis (4-12). 47.  Ramblers open conference play in first place, led by 15 points each by Maya Chandler and Sam Galanopoulos.  Kyla McMakin had 16 for the Billikens, who were 0-15 from beyond the arc.  Brooke Flowers, leading the nation in blocks per game, only had 1 block, plus 2 points and 6 boards.  It was the conference play debut for both head coaches in their first seasons with these teams

A10 teams split the two Thursday games.

Buffalo  (5-4)  58.         St Bonaventure. (3-12) 49.    I'yanna Lops had 15 points, 7 boards, and 5 blocks for the Bonnies.

Dayton (1-10)  94.  Cedarville (2-8)  58.    The game was scheduled after Dayton (and Texas A&M and Purdue) pulled out of what wa an 8 team Las Vegas ballroom invitational after the debacle of the first ballroom invitational.  A&M and Purdue then scheduled a game against the other. To be fair to the organizers,of the second event  this may have been in a different arena (ballroom) with better amenities, like medical staff and towels.  Dayton counted this game towards their won-loss record.  Cedarville which is near Dayton, counted it as an exhibition.  I don't know if the NCAA cares.

Re: Other Games Thread/A10 2022-23

With 9 teams over .500 in conference play and another at 7-7, there will be a lot of so-called statement games early in the season.  GWs win at Richmond was one of the most impressive along with St Joe's win at LaSalle.

Mayowa Taiwo is still in the top 50 nationally (47th) with a rebound per game average of 9.2.  Brooke Flowers (St L) is still is in first with blocks, both total and per game.  Sam Breen in tied for 7th nationally with 4 other players including Aliyah Boston (South Carolina) with 8 double doubles.  (More on Breen below.). And Megan  McConnell (Duq) and Kaitlyn Downey (Fordham) are tied for 12th with 7.  The double double stat is only kept for total not average.

Other Saturday results beside GW:  Homestanding URI (10-3) won their opener over Duquense (10-4) 70 - 63,  Rams led by Madison Hattix-Covington with 15 ipts/ 8 boards, Sophia Phillips with 14 points and Mayo Toure with 14/13.  Dolly Cairns again didn't play.  McConnell played 40 minutes and had 15/11 for the Dukes.

St Joe's (11-2) beat LaSalle (8-7) 68 - 64.  Tayla Brugler had 20 points for the Hawks.  Claire Jacobs had 17/7 for the Explorers while Mia Jacobs was 14 /10.  Hawks were out rebounded by 23 - 38, but the Explorers had 21 turnovers to only 10 for St Joe's

OVERANALYSIS ALERT - UMass (11-3) beat St Bonaventure (3-13) 74 - 51.  Minutewomen actually had a quick start with a 8 - 0 run but were down 17-14 after the first quarter. No points from Breen (0-4).or Sydney Taylor.   Bonnies started 4 - 7 from beyond the arc but only 3 - 18 the rest of the game.  All 3 came from Claire Cody, averaging 2.9 ppg, who had 12 points in 12 minutes on perfect shooting, including a 3 point play.  Bonnies pulled within 6 in the second half and then  Cody drew tighter defense.  I'yanna Lops only had 11 points, 6 rebounds and 1 block..
UMass matched the Bonnies' 7 -25 in three pointers but were 4 - 7 in the last period.  Sydney Taylor got untracked a bit with 3 - 10 from beyond the arc and 16 points.  MaKenna White, first off the bench as usual, had 13/8.  Minutewomen got 11 points each from Ber'Nyah Mayo (5 staeals) and Destiny Philoxy ((6 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 turnovers.)
Sam Breen also had 11 points, with a late basket.  She also had 14 rebounds and 11 assists for a triple double, only the 2nd in school history.  Plus 3 steals, a block and no turnovers.  She shot 5 - 14, 1 - 3 beyond the arc.  Breen is 1 rebound shy of a 10.0 average, which would mean a double/double average.  For you math majors, 139 rebounds in 14 games.

On Sunday, Fordham (9-5) 67 beat Davidson (7-8) 64 on CBSSN.  Anna DeWolfe had 25 points for the Rams while Asiah Dingle scored 19.  Downey was 7/5 so no double double for her.

Dayton (2-10) won its second in a row 71 - 66 over home standing George Mason (7-7.)

St Louis (5-12) raised its conference recorf to 1 - 1 with an over time win over VCU (3-10) 86 - 83.  For the Billikens, Kyla McMakin set a school record with 40 points.  Julia Martinez had 9 points, 12 rebounds, 9 assists, 5 steals, and 5 turnovers.  Brooke Flowers had 9 points (4-5, 1-1 FT), 6 rebounds and 4 blocks, her average.

In the Ivy League, Harvard (8-5) opened league play at home with a 67 - 59 win over Princeton (8-4.). The Tigers had won 42 straight league games, including 7 in a row over the Crimson.  Columbia (12-2) won in New Haven over Yale 97 - 53.  Columbia plays at Princeton next Friday at 7 pm on ESPNU.

Re: Other Games Thread/A10 2022-23

First off, thanks to xAC and dmvpirahna for their acknowledgement of this thread.  It adds to my enjoyment of following the conference and the games by being aware of teams records and noteworthy performances.  And thanks for your threads.  Being several hundred miles from the District, this site and the threads help keep me up to date with GW.  It's been a long 2 decades since I've been to the Smith Center.

Lasalle beat winless Hartford on Monday, 77 - 30 in what I believe was the last out of conference game for the league.  Claire Jacobs had 13 points and 7 rebounds.  Her sister Mia had 6/8.  Mia, 6'2", is the 3rd Jacobs sister out of Perth play on the Explorers.  She is the most recent A10 Rookie of the Week.  All 13 Explorers played, each with somewhere between 12 - 18 minutes.  Twelve scored.  Good for the coach for taking his foot off the gas early.

Hartford is transitioning to D3, and has a bizarre schedule, with very few home games, only 4 so far.  .  Later in the season they host equally winless Chicago State for 2 games and then travel to Chicago for 2 rematches.  Hartford is last, 361, in the NET rankings.  I think Chicago State is 359.

GW's game tomorow is one of the two most interesting on the schedule, matching 2 teams with winning records.

The other is URI (10-3, 1-0) at UMass (11-3. 1-0.)  Rams swept the series last year and have won 3 in a row over the Minutewomen.  Dolly Cairns, URI starting guard who dropped 21 at Amherst last year, has missed the last 3 games after suffering a concussion during a practice.  Her status tomorrow is unknown.  Tenin Magassa hasn't played this season after transferring from Dayton.  She is 6'5" and another Frenchwomen on their roster.  I don't know what kind of injury she has.  She might be able to play soon.  (My source is a tweet from some guy apparently related to UMass radio although I didn't recognize his name,)

UMass/URI starts at 5, broadcast on NESN and ESPN+.  Followed by St Louis at UMass MBBat about 7:30.

Re: Other Games Thread/A10 2022-23

After Wednesday's 4 games, there are 4 undefeated teams in conference play: St Joe's, URI and Fordham at 2 - 0, and Dayton with its opening win.  GW is among the 5 teams at 1 - 1.  Five teams are 0 -1 while VCU had 2 losses.

Richmond (11-4, 1-1) beat Loyola (6-9,1-1) by 68 - 49.  Katie Hill had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Spiders.

Fordham (10-5) had a buzzer beater home win over VCU 60-59.  Asiah Dingle had the game winning lay-up with 1.6 seconds left among her 23 points.  VCU advanced the ball on a time out and made a basket, which upon review was barely after the buzzer.  Photos on Fordham's website if anyone is interest.

Rhode Island (11-3) won their 4th straight over UMass (11-4, 1-1) 75-68.  UMass had another turnover filled 1st quarter (and no points again from Sam Breen) as the Rams led 19-7.  Minutewomen played 2 quarters of good ball for a small lead and then got swamped by 3s in the 4th.  Team stats were relatively close except URI was 14 - 30 from 3s while UMass was just 5 - 19,  Many of URI's 3 pointers were wide open.

Even missing starting guard Dolly Cairns for the 4th straight game, URI has depth, plus they're tall and physical.  Maya Toure, taller than the listed 6'2" with long arms, had 20 points (9-11) and 10 rebounds.  Madison Haddix-Covington (VCU) was key with 17/10 including 4 - 8 3s.  Sophie Phillips had 15 points including 5 - 7 from beyond the arc, 3 in th 4th quarter.  Sayawini Lassiter (Rutgers) had 12 points and 13 assists,

Breen finished with 20 points, 6 - 11 but 0 - 2. from beyond the arc, 8 - 8 FT.  She had another double double with 13, boards all defensive; plus 5 assists, 3 steals, but 4 turnovers.  Br'Nyah Mayo had 8 assists and 5 steals, and only 1 turnover although maybe her 14 missed shots should count as TOs. (4-18, 11 points.).

Destiny Philoxy is still struggling with bad passes and had 7 turnovers against just 2 assists and 4 steals.  She was only 3 - 6 from the foul line.  I read a reference to GW missing lay-ups.  Philoxy missed a breakaway lay-up that would have expanded a 3rd period UMass lead, and others missed what should have been easy lay-ups too.

Re: Other Games Thread/A10 2022-23

On Thursday, George Mason won a tight defensive battle at St Bonaventure 49 - 45.  Patriots improved to
8 -7, 1-1, while Bonnies fell to 3-14, 0-2.  Jada Brown led Mason with 9 points.  Nikki Oppenheimeer was the only double digit scorer with 15 points, including 4 - 8 from beyond the arc.  I'yanna Lops had 9 points and 5 rebounds.

Host Duquense (11-4, 1-1) edged Dayton (2-11, 1-1) 70 - 69.  Dukes were led by Amaya Hamilton with 21 points.  Stats machine Megan McConnell had 6 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists.  Sydney Freeman led Dayton with 15 points, all on 3s (5-11.). Ariana Smith had 13 points and 14 rebounds.

LaSalle's game at Davison was canceled due to health and safety protocols with the Davidson program.  A statement on Davidson's website said the game is considered a no - contest and will not be rescheduled,  The Wildcats next scheduled game is home on Sunday against Richmond,. Explorers are 9-7, 0-1, while Davidson is 7-8, 0-1.

While flipping channels last night, I happened upon the end of Illinois holding off in-state rival Northwestern 85-79, ending a 14 game game losing streak dating to 2014.  Illinois is 14-2, 4-1.  Northwestern is 6-8, 0-4.

This is noteworthy not just because Joe McKeown is coach of Northwestern, but Shauna Green, 6 year coach at Dayton, is in her first year at Illinois.  She brought with her junior Makira Cook, the leading scorer at 18.8 points per game, and sophomore Brynn Shoup-Hill.
