1. Meh Offense, Stinky Defense
Our conference only offense rating in '24 was only .5 points worse than '23. However, the league got better overall. Last year we were the 4th best offense in the league but this year the functionally equivalent offense dropped to 8th.
Our conference only defense rating in '24 was 6.2 points worse than '23. Big reason for that was giving up a putrid 39.4% from 3 and only generating 5.8% non-steal turnovers. As we all saw with our eyes, we played triple-ply Charmin soft defense.
2. Failing Around the Rim, Bombs Away From Deep
Last year we were 11th in the entire country in 2P% with 56% and this year we dropped to 49.9%. Last year 52.7% of our points came from 2-pointers and this year it was 45.3%. 45.3% was 330th in the country. Amazingly, there were 3 other A10 teams who got even fewer points from 2s: St. Joe's, VCU, and Dayton.
We attempted a school record number of 3s this year. While we shot better from 3 this year than last year, we all saw what happened when the 3's weren't falling (In the three-game stretch of La Salle, Dayton, and URI we shot a combined 13 for 76 from 3...yuck!).
Personally, I didn't expect us to miss Brendan Adams as much as we did this year. His ability to compliment JB and drive to the rim was sorely missed.
3. Meaningless, but technically true
GW has finished the season with a better KenPom rating than where it started. CC did this last year as well. Mojo and JC never finished better than where they started.

Can we assume that our gains despite the losing streak were driven in large part by the improvement in our strength of schedule?

We played the 3rd hardest schedule in the A10 so even though we were losing, we weren't dropping massively after each loss. The biggest drop occurred when we lost to URI which makes sense.
As for the OOC, the weak December opponents definitely did us no favors since we only won by such slim margins. It may have been a different story had we actually done what we were supposed to do and beat them by 15+.
Losing to South Carolina dropped us 12 spots
Beating Navy by 2 dropped us 6 spots
Beating Coppin by 31 gained us 7 spots
Playing and beating Bowie state dropped us 11 spots
Beating Alcorn State by 4 dropped us 7 spots
Beating UMES by 6 dropped us 7 spots.
So we went 5-1 (4-1 D1) in December and we dropped 36 spots. Losing 12 in a row dropped us 72.
