Re: GW at UMass Game Thread

I can understand Jacoi's frustration with CJ starting over him but Jacoi has been unplayable for weeks now and that is clear to everyone. Whether you allow Drumgoole to shoot through this mega slump or give some of his minutes to others, someone has to hit some three pointers. They could put a wet paper bag on the floor for all I care but if they can hit a few threes a game I am okay with it. I think not shooting 30% from three papers over a lot of issues for this team (as we saw earlier in conference play) but I just don't think they have the shooters to be even an average three point shooting team this year.

Would like to see Jun starting over Hansen from the jump against SLU and I agree with Mayhem that they need to find the balance between forcing the ball to Jun and him taking 5-7 shots a game.

Frustrating to waste another great Castro performance. He's been the Kenpom MVP 2 of the last 3 games despite GW losing all those games.

Re: GW at UMass Game Thread

i can certainly see both sides of the coin on the question of Drumgoole or Nesseh.   On one hand, Drumgoole is a 5th year player with somewhat of a proven history who is mired in a horrible shooting slump and may simply need to shoot his way out of it.  If you follow the NY Knicks (my NBA love) at all, just look at Mikal Bridges who was also a proven commidty but also stuck in a comparably horrible shooting slump.  The fanbase was calling for his head.  Then one game,  Bridges emerged from the slump with a vengence and went on a ridiculously hot shooting streak.   On the other hand, you are absolutely right in that Nesseh is a big part of the future of this program and can do all the things you said he could do.  I personally would like to see him with more playing time, as it seems he is being used mainly as Jun's caddy right now.  But Nesseh still has a way to go and may not be ready to make the switch to starter minutes quite yet.

This is not a new pattern for the team.   The more experienced Hutchinson was (and continues to be) stuck in an awful slump, but in this case the team made what I think we all consider to be the right move, namely being replace by the less experienced Jones.   And if you want to look even further, although I know he has been injured of late, Moss has disappointed and may be in the process of losing his starting job to Austin.

There are several points that need repeating:

1. Our guards are not playing at an A-10 level for the most part save Christian.
2. Darren is either hurt and not 100% or he has regressed. I hope it is the former.
3. No one can make an outside shot consistently right now. Gerald's 1-32 from three isn't just a shooting slump, it's mind boggling.
4. I know Gwmayhem and I previously went back and forth on this over what he meant but putting that aside, there was a reason I said what I said ... because of #1-3, predicting any kind of winning streak with this team is a giant leap of faith. I had hoped to be wrong but we just don't shoot it well enough to win consistently, we are getting punished on the boards, our guard play is for the most part not up to the challenge, and our defense while much improved from a year ago still isn't good enough to overcome the shooting and rebounding woes. In essence, what I was saying was that while on the days when the shots fall (out-perform our averages), we can win games, we likely won't have enough of those days to consistently win games as in going 5-2 over any 7-game stretch. Until that changes along with better rebounding, expect inconsistency in performance.

Rising, I'm just not going to let you put words in my mouth.  I never predicted a winning streak.  There were no predictions made, period.  The point of my post was to suggest that the team was embarking upon a softer part of the conference schedule, and it would do well to take advantage of this.  The HOPE was to perhaps go 5-2 over this stretch of games.  I am sure you can see that this statement is not a prediction.  It was never intended to reflect what I thought would happen.

As life in the A10 can be, Duquesne had won 3 in a row before losing this week to Dayton, Mason has won 5 in a row, and UMASS has won 3 in a row and 4 out of 5.  So what looked like a soft portion of a schedule a few weeks back can change pretty quickly.  Three losses in a row to three pretty hot teams right now.

It is really ok Gwmayhem. We all have made "realistic" forecasts (since you don't like the word prediction) that do not happen for one reason or another. Nobody is trying to hang you on it, only pointing out why it is so hard to forecast anything about this team.

Re: GW at UMass Game Thread

Can't help you here Rising.  It was neither a prediction nor a forecast.  I've already spelled out what it was, an acknowledgement that the schedule was about to become a bit easier (which is what anyone would have presumed at that point in time) and that I hoped the team would be able to take advantage of this.  There's nothing more to the story. You're either unable or unwilling to understand my intent behind the post.  For someone who has often railed against outcome-determinative points of view, you do seem determined to hold such a point of view about this.
