Welcome Luke Hunger!

6-10 Northwesthern transfer

Necessary frontcourt addition, numbers didn't pop but we've seen so many players coming from a Big 5 land at GW, most recently Rafael Castro

Welcome Luke!

Re: Welcome Luke Hunger!

Couldn't agree more.   Luke has really stepped up in the last two games and seems to be gaining  confidence with every extra minute he gets.   He took some heat earlier this season from this Group for his mediocre 3-point shooting, so-so hands, and Luke-warm athleticism compared to Slim.   I think he's been pretty consistent all along.   He has trouble with really talented, athletic bigs, but holds his own with the average A-10 big.   I think he's a darn near ideal back-up big for this League, with an above average upside and attitude.   We love ya Luke !

Re: Welcome Luke Hunger!

It was a solid game from Hunger. He obviously doesn’t have the physical tools or athleticism of Castro, but GW has been able to win with centers playing like he did last night. Guys like Bill Brigham, Arnoldo Toro, and Kevin Larsen come to mind.

Re: Welcome Luke Hunger!

Are we a matter of days away before the barrage of Luke Hunger, POY posts?

I like Hunger as a competent reserve forward on a roster that would compete for a A-10 championship. On our roster, he played very well against URI. But Dude, I imagine that we'd be 4-8 instead of 5-7

Re: Welcome Luke Hunger!

I think he is a great teammate- the play that helped save the game with URI was him diving on the ground against a guard to tie the ball up with GW having the arrow.  We were only up 5 or 6 and that play helped take the stress off.  he also kept out of foul trouble whe he knew we really did not have a back up

Re: Welcome Luke Hunger!

Noticed the Luke dive, which serves as an inspiration for a team that honestly seemed to
lack the fight or hunger (so to speak) to win. He not only did what we asked him to do last game,
he really stepped up.
So far, Luke is a mixed bag. Intriguing moves against generally smaller teams but a bit stymied
against better A-10 talent as Ralphie pointed out.
Still shout "No!" when I see him winding up from the 3, confusing a casual by osmosis GW fan in
my home. But Luke may be able to improve his 3-point touch, much like Zeke Armwood really did his senior
year.
What we need now is for him to continue the starter's mentality that he just ably demonstrated. In return,
when he is showing power moves, we need to feed him the ball more. Something we also don't do enough of with Castro in generally, especially on days he could probably put up 30+. Our often shoot first mentality doesn't encourage feeding the post.
Here's the really intriguing part. Luke has another year of eligibility. If he is inclined to keep working at it to
developing his game--which can come later to big men, he can use his tools to make a real difference not only this year, but certainly next season when Castro is gone from the start.
This is the right level and right place for Luke to become a substantial force in the A-10.
And for him, that would lead to playing pro basketball somewhere for good money.

31 points 10 rebounds

3-3 from three-point range

8-9 from the line

Luke Hunger on the heels of two straight great games somehow far out did himself lifting GW to a 72-53 victory over 21-4 George Mason!

Bravo

Re: Welcome Luke Hunger!

Kudos to the coaching staff - they seem to have tweaked the offense a little when Luke is in to play to his strengths.  And Luke again is the first one on the floor to go for a loose ball.  Loved his attitude getting the crowd involved

Re: Welcome Luke Hunger!

Upside and attitude on full display against Mason.  Showed he can play lots of minutes and actually gain in confidence as the game progresses to crunch time.   What a performance.  We love ya Luke !

Re: Welcome Luke Hunger!

As I think about it, Jean works very well with Luke due to the threat of the Outside shot that Luke is now hitting .  The high pick - the defense has to respect Luke and that has caused some huge mismatches and/or dropped coverage.  Believe Jean had at least 2 uncontested lay ups after both defenders went to Luke.

Castro the better player but he does not present that outside threat.

Great adjustment by the coaching staff

Re: Welcome Luke Hunger!

Wondering about Luke Hunger and Jean as co-A10 players of the week or maybe just Hunger as A10 Player of the Week. Regardless, they are Geedubs co-players of the week.

https://atlantic10.com/news/2026/2/16/mens-basketball-hunger-earns-a-10-under-armour-player-of-the-week-lewis-claims-fourth-rookie-honor.aspx

George Washington forward Luke Hunger was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 16, 2026. He averaged 26.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists, shooting 68% from the field and 80% from 3-point range over two games, which included a career-high 31-point performance against George Mason.

Re: Welcome Luke Hunger!

24 points 10 boards for Luke Hunger

5 offensive boards, 3 more 3s made, 7-8 from the line

4 tremendous games in a row for Luke Hunger, with wins over George Mason and Rhode Island helping stabilize things during the Slim injury

Re: Welcome Luke Hunger!

It sounds like when Castro comes back, Caputo is considering starting both he and Luke. If this is the case, who would you start at the 5? Castro is an inch taller and lacks Luke’s outside shot, but he’s quicker and more athletic than Luke. Its an interesting question, at least to me.
