GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

I thought this deserved its on thread.

It’s only a preseason practice game, but Georgetown is coming to the Smith Center Oct 18.

Great job by Caputo and the athletic department for getting this to happen, even if only an exhibition.  And credit to Cooley for coming here, even if for a glorified practice.

Somewhere, Mark Plotkin is smiling.

And yes, it occurs to me that we might need to throw this game or they’ll never play us in an actual real game. Still, best preseason game ever.

John Thompson must be rolling in his grave

Maybe Cooley is so proud of Castro that he wants to see what the chatter is all about.

Amazing, even if only an exhibition.
And at the Smith Center.
We waited so long for this.
FQ is right: And shout out to the late Mr. Plotkin.
The question is: if we win this and lose every other game, would we still be happy?
A harder question than you think for some of us.

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

I have never been more excited for a game in my life!!! And it is an exhibition, in October. Yes, a win in this exhibition followed by a winless season (or a COVID-cancelled one... hush you!) and I would still be over the moon.
Obviously, both programs need to do something to get attention and sell ticket units ahead of the season, and this seems like a (excuse the pun) slam dunk of way to break the NFL´s monopoly over DC sports coverage in October. And this (more so than appearing on a postage stamp) proves that John Thompson really is dead.

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

It's great for an exhibition game but that's all it is - not worth much for bragging rights etc. Both coaches will likely be playing much deeper into the bench. Let's not make too much of it win or  lose. It will mean very little in the big picture.

The one thing that it may do is lead to a regular season game in the near future and that would be the best outcome from this game.

Maybe it's me but I don't possess the Georgetown inferiority complex virus that seems to possess some of our alumni where they will convince themselves that this is the biggest game on the schedule.

Not hard at all. Win the games that count.

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

My sense is that the game will be more meaningful to GW and its fan base than to Georgetown and their fan base for no other reason than the game will matter more to GW.  For decades, Gtown has had no interest in this game fearing much to lose with little to gain.  Now, they can lose, claim that an exhibition is not at all important, and they would not be wrong.  Whatever pressure that may have existed has been lifted.

Rising, I don't think you were around the GW program when the two schools played twice annually.  It was not a lopsided rivalry.  Then, one school (not ours) gets a HOF Coach, lands the best high school player in the country, is elevated to a bigger, more prestigious, and far more lucrative conference, gets all of its games televised, moves to an NBA arena, etc., while the other can do nothing but watch it all happen.  If you were a Colonial while all of this were happening, you might have developed an inferiority complex too.

No, it's not the biggest game on the schedule.  Yet in many respects, it will be the most meaningful.  That's what happens when two former rivals who haven't played one another in over 40 years decide to play one another.  Even as an exhibition.

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

How many people on this board remember seeing GU and GW play? We went to their gym my senior year for the last game of the season. We won and also stole their pep band's drum. Ransomed later. Just an old tradition between us close neighbors which went "Gone with the Wind". Thanks John Thompson.

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

My gut reaction to this game being scheduled was a resounding 2 thumbs up for the simple reason that it is timely.  It comes after the long summer of conditioning and workouts and measures the new  team chemistry and progress.  Last year we criticized the weakness of the early D2 opponents and how it didn’t serve us well. Now we have a better measuring stick.  Better competition has arrived.

Without getting into the past 50 years of the 2 schools, I’ve always understood early OOC and exhibition games to be generated somewhat by coaches relationships and also some local competition.  The Hoyas have numerous DMV players and a coach who seems to be a class act.  I think this is nothing more than both coaches saying “hey, let’s see watcha got!”  This will be fun.

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

I long ago gave up my rivalry animosity against Georgetown, at least as long ago when Georgetown cheaped out and let us buy out the Vern campus from under them. It’s a good start and I always want to beat Georgetown in whatever sport we play them but our record against the Hoyas is not to be envied. Measuring stick? Probably more so than Fort Hood. And I was here 56 years ago when we played them regularly.

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

Its a great get by Caputo and it will be great to see them at the Smith Center, but G’town is not anything close to what they once were. I agree 100% with Rising that the only way this game has any real significance is if it leads to future regular season games.

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

I remember playing them regularly. In fact, when I played on the 70-71 freshmen team (before freshmen were eligible to play on the varsity) we played them in McDonough and I scored one of my few baskets that year.

i also remember when GT was 3-23 and then they hired JT Jr … and the rest is history.

I only hope ESPN+ carries the game.

Re: GW exhibition vs Ge*rgetown Oct 18

Until somewhat recently, GW and Georgetown had played each other more than any other teams. And the last game was in the 70s, I believe! Plus Gtown is playing Maryland in the regular season. The Thompsons' sway over Georgetown, and their grudges, might finally be over, and that's a good thing exhibition or not.

Ah, protests in the streets, the Sino-Soviet Institute takeover, watching the flow of coeds on G Street from the fraternity house, and basketball with that school down the street.  Or at least I think I remember it.......maybe.

Good move for future.

December 12, 1968.  McDonough Gym.  Waning seconds.  Georgetown misses a free throw that would have put them up by 2.  We get the rebound (I think Roger Strong), and two quick passes result in a driving left hand layup by Ralphie Barnett to give us the win, 74-73.  A beautiful silence in the gym, except for those of on the visitor’s side.  A golden moment!
