Re: GW vs Florida 80-70 Game

An improvement from the Deleware debacle but 7-19 from the line?!?!? The Crown is still an option, but winning the A10 tournament is the only way to score a ticket to the Big Dance.

80-70. 7-19 FT? That hurts.  UF 20-33. I liked the last game we played against Florida better.

Agree. Truthfully, Florida sucks. They ain’t last years Gators by a stretch and will be interesting to see if they can gel. Doubt it.

Glad we covered at least and didn’t lie down when things started to go south. But this was a disappointing week.

Re: GW vs Florida 80-70 Game

Losing never fun but much better play and preparation than Delaware which was very disappointing.

For the poster that disparages Hunger - he has had a bad game but he has been a very key contributor as a back up center and will be a big part of our success.

Lots of posters love to see the negative.  I try to stay on the other side and enjoy the games.  Life’s too short to be a negative fan.

I personally think we played much much better than certainly Wednesday. FL just overwhelmed us in rebounding and the interior offense. Out of 10 TOs, 8 were steals by FL. Pretty clean play on our part…and the 21-12 foul differential is bullshit refs

Agreed.   This should help us get our confidence back. We battled really hard. Was tough to get shots against their length (as Wisconsin said), and we shot ourselves in the foot with that 7-19 ft shooting, but we played really solid defense, we battled back from 20 down, and we showed some real fight.

I’ll also add that it’s ridiculous to compare anything to that Delaware game.  That’s a once in a decade or two debacle where point blank shots wouldn’t roll in for us. It was unfortunate, but that loss is not who this team is. I think today’s performance was more like who we are - a solid team that relies on getting to the rim, which is tough against a massive front court.

We are probably an NIT-level team this year (which we haven’t been in a decade), but there’s a lot of season left and our season is far from defined.

Re: GW vs Florida 80-70 Game

A very respectable loss but I am concerned that we can't make free throws and that Johnson has completely lost his 3-point shot. Hope he's not ailing. As for the Delaware debacle, I may never get over that one.

Re: GW vs Florida 80-70 Game

I feel like losing by 10 to defending national champs, who while not the same team as last year, are still ranked #15 (and same in Ken Pom) is very respectable for us.  I think if we didn’t have the Delaware debacle we’d actually be feeling great right now.

Agree about Garrett. Hope he finds his shot. It makes all the difference.

Re: GW vs Florida 80-70 Game

As Yogi Berra said about baseball "it's 90% mental and the other half is physical."
Clearly, this team had no interest or focus in the Delaware game because of this game!  And the excitement of this game dominated from the moment it was announced.  Up until this game the team was shooting 75.6% FT's and 35% from 3.  Garrett and the rest of the team have shown who can shoot.  Today's game was a nationally televised game in a strange gym on a new rim with it's own depth perception and adrenaline loaded players against the defending national champs.  You couldn't have 2 opposite ends of the spectrum between the lowly Blue Hens at home and the almighty Gators in the Everglades.

Now that these 2 games are history, this team should get their heads on straight, shoot 500 foul shots every day, and kick ass when the A10 starts!!!  Stay healthy and lets gooooooo!!!

Re: GW vs Florida 80-70 Game

I forget who pointed it out in a previous game but I’m officially concerned about Tre Dinkins.

Outside of the game, I had a blast going to a “road game” and hanging out with all the other GW alumni at Yard House. Was fun to chat up some of the MBB alums like Joe McDonald, Isaiah Armwood, and Damian Hollis.

Encouraging bounce back after that awful Delaware loss although there were certainly some things not to like. We did a live edition of the GW Basketball Insiders podcast a few minutes ago. David and Abe were at the game and had some great insight. Check it out and as always let us know your thoughts!

Re: GW vs Florida 80-70 Game

Thanks fellas!  Nice recap.
My concern is that Garrett might be playing through some physical pain and that Dinkins is having another type of emotional pain.  Hopefully the 9 days gives CC and the team a chance to recharge and get right.

Re: GW vs Florida 80-70 Game

One thing maybe the next 9 days can bring is a tweaked defense.    The double team is a nice idea but we just don't execute it very well, resulting in far more open looks rather than turnovers or bad shots.  One big difference in the game was Miami moved the ball and thereby was able to neutralize the double team.  Again, we were fortunate to keep the game close in the first half, not so much on our defense but on Miami's poor 3 point shooting.   As someone on the board once pointed out, the defense needs to be more than hoping that the other team misses 3 point shots and fouling.    GW is fairly big and are athletic and should be able to defend better than they do.

Re: GW vs Florida 80-70 Game

Actually I thought Florida shot well from 3 in the first half, especially Lee. LSF is right about the switching on D when a team is patient and moves the ball we usually end up in a matchup with our guard covering a big. Florida’s depth on the front line was a huge advantage. Our point guard situation has to improve, we need better outside shooting, and if we can’t make foul shots we are not going to beat better teams. The good news is we played hard.

Re: GW vs Florida 80-70 Game

Why is the St. Mary's game listed as an exhibition? Is that because they are a Division II school? If we win, and we all know now that's not a guarantee, does it count on our record?

Real game for GW. Exhibition game for D3 St Mary’s.

Florida shot 3-12 from the 3 for the half.  I remember Lee shooting well in the first half from 3 but not the others. I also remember our doing a pretty good job rebounding that first half.

I used to agree that these are just kids and we shouldn’t criticize but now that we’re paying the players, that has changed the whole dynamic.

I did not want to let this post go unnoticed and it's probably worthy of a separate thread.  We've had the discussion before as to where the line should be drawn with respect to criticizing players.  Some feel that it's completely out of bounds regardless of how things were said or meant.  The rationale is that these are young adults and that they shouldn't be subject to any criticisms, period.  Others, myself included, are fine with criticism as long as its constructive and well-intended.  The example I've used before is that saying so-and-so sucks is different than so-and-so needs to play beater defense, or even that so-and-so should not be in the regular rotation.

It should go without saying that invoking the name of Saddam Hussein in conjunction with one of our players was, is, and should always be considered out of bounds.  If it's meant to be funny, it's not.  If it's meant to be harsh, then perhaps some perspective is needed.

What's interesting about the post is that it implies that players should be subject to criticism, more so than ever, because they are now being paid.  Am curious as to whether the payment of players has changed your views on this subject.  For me, this does not change anything.  I still believe that constructive criticism should be fair game, and anything outside of this is uncalled for, irrespective of who gets paid and how much.  Thoughts?

Re: GW vs Florida 80-70 Game

Gwmayhem - I agree, I made an early comment that personal attacks are a little over the top.  We are in the NIL era it's not the fault of GW players that there is a payment system.  I actually admire our best players for staying instead of jumping to schools with fat NIL budgets. It certainly doesn't justify name calling invoking the name of brutal killer.  I think it's ok to point out skill gaps, really bad plays etc.
I king of find it amusing to follow the in-game threads.  Several times I read the ongoing conversation thought we were down by 30 points only to find out the Revs (I am still not used to them not being the colonials) comfortably ahead.   I guess it's more fun to write the negative.
At any rate the board is going to criticize and that's ok, just not attack.  Remember if the NIL is the reason its ok to attack them i expect those posters to applaud when a good player leaves GW for the money,
