I don’t think there is a prayer of him being fired this off season, though in my opinion he’s earned it. I don’t think he will ever improve as a game management coach, or in making adjustments. Next year we will be treated to much of the same. He’ll build a one dimensional team that will need to be at about 40% from the arc to sustain the many turnovers, failed box-outs, defensive mental brain farts and lack of execution on the basics, like free throws. There won’t be any consequences for the lazy passes or crazy three point shots, just the same ol’ story of running into the game without a helmet over and over again. Nice guy, great fundraiser, stabilized the program etc etc. but I’m with some of the others here who are just tired of settling and enabling mediocrity.

Wonder if we can get Mike Hall on board as an AC?
Would bring his experience as an AC in the G League and Europe (which realistically is where most of our guys will end up playing) and most importantly can teach our kids how to play like a junkyard dog.

Definitely gets my vote for most disappointing season. They lost every game when trailing at the half. They lost every game when trailing at the five-minute mark. Whenever they had a big halftime lead, they usually squandered it. That is coaching, plain and simple, especially considering that the player talent level on the roster was easily the highest since the NIT team. Caputo is who is who is at this point - if he hasn't learned to make in-game adjustments by year four, I highly doubt he's going to suddenly become a master tactician in year five. I'm in the time to move on camp, but I'm sure the most that'll happen is Lipitz sending out a letter saying we need to do better like Vogel sent out before Jamion's last season.

The lack of self-awareness here is incredible. You blew a 21-point lead and you're up there talking about your NET and KenPom ratings? I get standing up for your team, but come on.

Like a guy who knows he fucked up.
Here’s the reality: he took a very talented team and led them to a season that came nowhere close to realizing their potential. So my response to him is: what NET or KenPom would these guys have had this season under a different CC (Competent Coach)? That should put some perspective on his attempt to lipstick the pig.

Caputo is an assistant coach. Terrible game coach. His ex-boss would never have lost so many winnable games. Kaput! This guy sets records for the opposing teams. Biggest comeback in St. Louis basketball history. Really wonderful. The whole year, maybe for since he has been our coach. He has learned Nothing from his mistakes. No way he should he have lost this game. NO way, but he did. A miracle he won the last game. Hot air doesn't win games. Sigh!!

Completely disagree. This is lobbying plain and simple for an NIT spot. Lonergan did the same thing the year we didn’t make the NCAA. If you want a spot you have to start selling the team hard to the selection committee. Am I happy he has to do this? Absolutely not but this is common across the sport for both teams on the bubble or just want to play on.

Agree -- don't blame him. He's pitching us to the NIT.

Ha no plenty to blame him for, just saying blaming him for pushing the numbers and our schedule is a normal tactic these days.

I want to be very clear that I do not think this team should be worthy of an NIT but I have heard they may get a spot. Obviously still plenty to be decided in the coming days but still noteworthy...

This is not a team worthy of The Crown, much less the NIT (Delaware? Mason? Fordham?). But the last time GW entered the season with pre-season expectations of a Dance card, they went on to win the NIT.
Too many blown leads to make me believe this team was any better than its 15 losses.

Just curious why someone would think they are headed for a spot? Would it be our 91 NET? Our 1-9 record against Quad 1/2? Our 3 Q4 losses? Our 9th place finish in the league with a losing league record? Our ability to fill our own arena (lol)? Not feeling it, unless the NIT has essentially become the equivalent of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Where's that loser Adam Kilgore when you need him to investigate a GW coach? I guess all he needs is five players on background (plus the AD smearing the coach, also on background) to do that. F Adam Kilgore.

Very fitting that this monumentally disappointing season end with a monumentally disappointing loss. The question is...who is the first to announce for the portal. I can't see anybody on the team who is a lock to stay.
Players most likely to leave--
1. Johnson. Regressed in the second half, got demoted in his role. Maybe slightly injured. CC always loses faith in a veteran player as the season progresses. Buchanan last year, Johnson this year. Can definitely see Johnson having success at a better program with real coaching.
1a. Bevins. Never got off the bench
Autry is probably the one I'm most split on. He could leave because he's got talent and CC seems to go hot and cold on him, getting him lots of minutes or making him 8th man. But he never really gets benched.
Jones stays because CC loves him and he's the best guard on the team.
Bubu stays unless he leaves for a smaller school to get more PT
Aranguren stays because he's also a CC fave and improved immensely under CC. Don't see why he'd give up this good thing for him, but perhaps he gets inspired to move up.

I don’t know if you heard, but the Post doesn’t really cover sports anymore…

Doesn't the player's NIL earning potential enter into the equation?

Yes, of course, but I have no idea how NIL plays into their current situation, nevertheless their future arrangement

Another major takeaway for this season: we played 10 games against the top 7 teams in the league and our record was 1-9! The only win was at home against a fading Mason and 7 of the losses were in very close games. That says a lot about our season.

This is one of the most disappointing GW seasons I can remember, but I’m surprised by how many people here are surprised by today’s outcome, considering:
1. GW blew an even bigger lead (24 points) against a lesser opponent the day before, although they did manage to somehow come back and win that one. GW also blew a large lead the last time we played SLU back in January.
2. Everyone should have known SLU would make a run in the second half and GW would have to find a way to win a close one, which they have been really bad at this year.
3. GW has been a good first half 3 pt team this year, but has struggled to make those shots in the second half, and SLU was effective at shutting down our inside game, even in the first half, as is evident in Castro’s numbers for the game.
4. There is a reason we all wanted GW to finish top 4 in conference play and get the double bye. Those teams went 4-0 today. We got tired in the second half and they were fresh.
I for one support us keeping Caputo for the following reasons:
1. Although our record in close games was horrible this year, I think this is more on the players than the coach. Remember, Caputo had an amazing record in overtime just a few years ago.
2. This program needs stability, not starting over with a new coach yet again.
3. Caputo has been good at bringing in talent, but even more important to me is that he has been good at retaining talent.
4. Despite the disappointment considering the preseason hype and early season success, the team’s metrics have improved every year he has been here. The record was worse than last year because the schedule was significantly tougher.
5. Caputo seems smart and I think he will learn from and grow from this year’s experiences.

An NIT bid would be great. That would give us an opportunity to lose another game by 7 points or less! Also, I'm very concerned about attendance for next year. In my 61 years of following the team, students have never turned out much except for the Jarvis and Tallent-- coached years). Moreover, this past season the blue seats were often empty and taken over by our opponents' fans. After this season, next season will be much worse (I may not renew my season tickets after 45 years I'm so disgusted unless we have a new coach). Mediocrity begets mediocrity!
