A Paul Jorgensen is much better for CC's offense than a Joe McDonald (still love Joe though).

Jorgensen was fascinated by his own ballhandling. Give me Alex Mitola any day! He was smooth, steady, cerebral, clutch with great court vision. Checked off most boxes when it came to the basics - handle, passing, shooting, D, and most importantly floor leadership. Without someone like him, 2nd half leads evaporate by way of turnovers, 10 second violations, and desperation 3's.

I will make my annual post. There is so much bad information out there regarding transfers and interest. I can assure you that GW is looking into names that you have never heard of or previously were not connected to GW. Just because we once recruited them does not mean there is current interest. In many cases that ship has sailed or we are no longer interested. What I can say is other than a 5 man and a PG, a lot will depend on what the retention looks like. Since April 7th is when the portal opens officially, the conversations that are being had this week and next will drive the train where it needs to go. I do expect maybe 1-2 departures (don't ask me who as I can't/won't tell you). However, I do think this is one of CC's strengths in terms of exhausting all the possibilities. Of course, we are limited by the money we can offer and our A-10 status relative to a number of P5 schools etc. We don't even have the most money in the A-10. Let CC and staff cook and see where this ends up. But I am just promising you that some of the names being discussed nobody has come close to mentioning and it's probably better that way. Again, you may read a post on X saying GW reached out to a player or is not listed as a school reaching out to a player. Don't believe either. What matters is commitments not interest. The month of April will be very interesting for sure.

Don't we have Joe McDonald working at GW?.
He does work at GW, He's Director of Alumni Engagement in the Office of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving. I think his basketball days may be done.

What I'd love to see in a new point guard is someone who can consistently keep his body between the player he is guarding on defense and the basket. In other words, someone who can keep up with these speedy penetrators who seem to have little difficulty getting to the basket. Am not sure GW has had such a defender since Shawnta (who players could shoot over but not drive past).

Jackson Holcombe, the guy from Utah State who put up 27 on us is in the portal

Here is this year's offseason tracker document:
It has info about current players/coaches along with potential additions and guys GW has reported interest in. Please let me know if I am missing any information or if there's anything I should know to improve the document.

Very helpful organizational tool, well done
While just 3 for now, the available roster spots will likely end up being more like 5-6 in the next few weeks

We could use a new center after losing Castro! 🤣

This is a real bummer to me, as I would have loved to see him be our first 4 year starter in a long time… Presumably he is looking to move up to a P5 school and play in the NCAA Tourney, as it doesn’t make much sense to me for a 3 year starter to move down a level or laterally. It will be interesting to see which programs show interest.

That is deeply upsetting. Only thing I can think of is someplace where his Dad can
get a job.
Don't know what's better for him. Trey was a starter and coach seemed to have confidence in
him. Transferring up is a crap shoot for Trey. Odds of a starting role could be difficult. And someplace
may put him in as a designated shooter.
If even or down, why not stay here. Unless it's a money play. And can't imagine we wouldn't do Ok
by Trey moneywise.
Weird in these announcements to see that someone is repped by this or that agency. It's not schools or
even playing time, or fit for these transfers. It's marketing.
Certainly seems like a good guy who could have been our leader next year. And as pointed out,
would actually have a relatively normal 4-year experience in college
Stating the obvious, this is not good for college basketball. Or even the vague concept of them being
students.

Can’t say I’m surprised that he wants to try something different his senior year (most likely he goes to a team where he expects to play in the tourney).
I’m very appreciative that we got three solid years from him. He’ll he fondly remembered, and I’ll be rooting for him at his next stop.
Hopefully, the new guys we bring in will keep us in the top 100, if not take the additional step forward we hoped for this season.

I'll am very sad to see Trey go. I really grew to love watching him play and I think he cared deeply about GW and his teammates, which is really all you can ask for. He was responsible for some big moments the last few years and I hope those are remembered fondly even if this year's team didn't have the success we were hoping for. I will be rooting hard for him wherever he ends up and hope he finds a good role on a tournament team.
As for Bubu, I can't say I'm shocked but it's disappointing that he didn't pan out. Playing for three schools in four years remains insane to me on so many levels. I recognize that's the nature of this sport now but I just don't see why anyone would want to play for three different coaches on three different teams in three different cities at three different schools in the span of four years... All that change in such a short period seems terrible to me. Either way I wish him the best, presumably at a lower level than the A10

I hate to lose Autry for many reasons, but I think he may have hit his ceiling under GW and Caputo. Although he showed some growth between his 2nd and 3rd seasons at GW, I don’t believe the growth was significant or that he played up to his potential (he was pre-season all conference). From his personal standpoint, he probably made a wise decision. Still, he was one of the few (only?) players on the team I would trust shooting the ball late in a close game (still didn’t do much good given our record in close games) but he was somewhat streaky and would go invisible for portions of a game. Will miss him but is replaceable. As for Bubu, loved his name but not much else about him, from his overrated defense to his bad shooting.

The news about Trey hurts even if this reality was in the back of my mind for a while now, which it was. I'm ambivalent regarding LSF's remarks. On the one hand, I appreciate Trey's willingness to improve his game. Over the course of his stay at GW, we saw greater strides on defense as well as more willingness to take the ball to the hole. On the other hand, Trey was selected as a preseason third teamer and did not produce along these lines. It will be interesting to see where he lands. His father has undoubtedly pointed out how amazing a feeling it is to play at the Dance. But would Trey command the same role or play as many minutes for a P5 school than he did at GW? And if not, would this be OK with him? One vital component he does offer is experience and I suspect that there is a program out there that will value this enough to provide Trey the opportunity of being a starter.
As for Bubu, this becomes a cautionary tale of the differences between transfers moving up to play at GW vs. moving down. There is simply a far greater risk when guys move up. CC undoubtedly recruited Bubu to fit a scheme that he was looking to play. Yet at some point, how well you execute becomes more important than fitting a style of play. Bubu, in a sense, came to us as a poor man's Yuta: someone who could provide shutdown defense on one end of the court while knocking down corner 3's at the other end. It turns out that the defense was more often pedestrian than great and the outside shooting was erratic. Bubu's injury did not help but the fact is that we were drawing these conclusions prior to his injury.
Wishing both players great success at their next stops.

Rumor is the elder Autry is taking a position as an assistant at UVA. The assumption is that Trey will follow his dad there (and likely come off the bench for a tournament team). It is important to note that Trey was adamant about not wanting to play for his dad when he came to GW, although that could be different now that he's an assistant rather than the head coach.

Could also be different now that he’s a senior, in terms of wanting to spend one season under his father.
I also disagree with LSF. Autry got better every year here.
Although a solid athlete, he’s not super explosive so I think he about reached his ceiling for what he is. He improved his defense every year, he’s a reliable catch and shoot guy, he can rebound now and then using basketball smarts more than leaping, and he even learned to take it the hole effectively. I also think the only reason he wasn’t all conference was because of the team’s record, which you can’t really pin on him - he was pretty much the same guy as his sophomore year (it was just late game breakdowns across the board that did us in).
I think he can be an effective catch and shoot role player on a decent tourney team, like a UVA, but he just doesn’t have the game to be a first or second option here or at a lower level - it’s just not the kind of player he is.
I wish him well.
