Joe Barrer Joins Men's Basketball Staff as Assistant Coach
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball has added former NBA G League head coach Joe Barrer as an assistant coach ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, Head Coach Chris Caputo announced on Thursday.

Interesting that CC is hiring a member of the same '06 George Mason coaching staff. Hoping this is a sign of trust and respect as well as player development.

Many of you clamored for Caputo to add someone to the staff with head coaching experience, which is exactly what this is. He also has experience at a variety of levels which I like. I think this is a good hire

The other huge benefit here is that CC has enjoyed a long-term working relationship and friendship with Joe. This isn't a comparable situation to when GW hired Brian Ellerbe to be Karl Hobbs's top assistant and presumably unofficial "coach-in-waiting" should the school decide to make a change. CC receives an experienced sounding board without having to look over his shoulder. Seems like a solid hire.

Meh. Correct me if I'm wrong, but coach Barrer never recruited or developed any top players. He was probably out of a job (or, if the Squadrons were willing to retain him, possibly didn't want to move to Louisiana) so CC, being a good friend, threw him a lifeline. In this new era of college hoops, what you need is a coach who can recuit real talent and/or quickly help a player improve. You don't have the time or luxury of working with player for more than one season. Hope it works out for everyone.
